Matson has been a community partner in Hawaii since 1882. With the addition of our new Alaska operations, Matson’s business activities now span the Pacific— and so do our community activities, with our employees at the tiller.

In 2015, the Matson Foundation contributed in excess of $2 million in cash and in-kind services to more than 650 community organizations—a new high-water mark for our company. Each recipient is listed in our Manifest —just a handful are featured, visually illustrating the diversity of needs and opportunities.

Directed by our employees, the Foundation assists causes which have earned the respect and involvement of their colleagues, our business partners and other leaders in our communities.

You’ll see in this Manifest that our employees are involved and generous, reflecting our values of improving the communities in which we work and live. The Foundation honors their commitments and magnifies their contributions.

All of us at Matson enjoy being an active part of our communities and are grateful for the opportunity to be of service to them.

Matson’s donations in 2015 totaled $1.8 million in cash and additional in-kind support valued at $440,000. These figures and the charts below include matching gifts and both Ka Ipu ‘Aina and Adahi I Tano’ program participants.

Community Investment Highlights: 2015 • We make significant, predictable cash donations to social service

agencies and respond, as generously as possible, to unanticipated needs.o More than $250,000 to United Wayso More than $150,000 in multi-year pledges

• We donate urgently needed shipping to disaster-impacted communities and for core social services. o More than $250,000 in disaster shipping

• And we loan or donate containers to charities and for community fundraising fairs and festivals.o More than three dozen containers donated

Matson can be counted on to provide ongoing, annual support to the United Way and its social service agencies, to the USO, Navy League and the Coast Guard Foundation and to support trade and maritime education. We understand the role of food banks, farming and meal programs; public television and radio facilities and news programming; and disaster preparedness in vulnerable communities.

And, in Hawaii, where Matson was recognized as a ‘top five’ corporate donor last year, our varied support produced a children’s surf festival in calm Waikiki waves, continued training for novice teachers joining Hawaii’s public schools and expanded non-instrument celestial navigation skills.

Preparing for natural disasters is operationally essential for Matson and our communities. We partner with the American Red Cross to effectively allocate corporate and employee donations to communities reeling from earthquakes, tsunamis, typhoons, cyclones, hurricanes and superstorms. This past year was notable for impacts to the Western Pacific island nations and territories we serve.

In April and again in August, two intense typhoons—Maysak and bigger, badder Soudelor—ransacked the islands of Saipan, Chuuk, Yap and others, destroying great swaths of homes, farms and businesses and critical infrastructure.

Matson responded generously with cash to the Red Cross and partnered with a network of supporters to send multiple donated shipments of relief supplies and rebuilding materials.

Groups of Saipan expats in Hawaii, Long Beach and Seattle sent supplies by the 40-foot container load full.

In Hawaii, Matson’s flagship land-based environ-mental program, Ka Ipu ‘Aina (container for the land), promotes cleanup projects that address littering, dumping and to reduce the danger to marine life from such shore-based debris.

Non-profit groups on Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island coordinate volunteers who conduct approved clean-up projects to receive

a cash donation. Matson provides the use of container equipment and pays for related trucking expenses, and for debris disposal fees. Many of the Oahu cleanups are conducted in partnership with the City & County of Honolulu.

During 2015, roughly ten cleanups were conduct-ed each month across four different islands.

In 2015, Matson donated to nearly 150 non-profits through these two

programs; including all related expenses, close to $190,000 was allocated to these cleanup efforts.

On Guam, during 2015, a similar program Adahi I Tano’ (caring for the land) was conducted almost every other week, with volunteers clearing shorelines, streams and roadsides of both man-made and natural storm debris. Since the program began in 2012, in partnership with the Islandwide Beautification Task Force, more than 60 different non-profits have participated, each earning a cash donation.

In Alaska, employees representing three of Matson’s newest communities—Anchorage, Kodiak and Dutch Harbor—have commenced consideration of charitable and community requests. Our presence in Washington state has grown to include the port of Tacoma, as well.
