NEWSLETTER No. 22 27th July 2017
Dear Parents, Friends and Students
Another week has slipped by and we are already at the
end of Week 2 of Term 3. The majority of students have
returned to school wearing their uniform correctly. We
still have a few wearing an incorrect mix of summer and
winter uniform. The uniform policy is on our website and
all families need to be very familiar with our uniform
requirements. Students out of uniform will be sent home
a uniform infringement notice requesting parents explain
the reason why their child is out of uniform and when they
expect this to be rectified. Our uniform defines who we
are as a community and the students should be proud to
wear it.
On Friday the Year 5 class will present their assembly for
this semester. All parents and members of our
community are invited to join with us. The assembly will
start at 9:00am and it will be held in the undercover area.
Our next assembly will take place on Friday 11th August
and it will be hosted by the Year 4 class.
At Matthew Gibney Catholic Primary School, we are
currently reviewing our Early Childhood Philosophy. A
philosophy underpins everything we do as early childhood
educators. It is a living document that is reviewed
regularly when new knowledge becomes available
through sources such as the EYLF (Early Years Learning
Framework) and professional learning opportunities. A
philosophy starts with ‘what we believe’ and moves on to
‘what does that mean for what we do?’ It is also
important to understand how children learn. We will share
the Early Childhood Philosophy with the school
community when it is completed.
In the coming weeks the students from Years 3 and 5 will
be participating in the Bishops’ Religious Literacy
Assessment. This assessment focuses on what students
have learnt in Religious Education. It is purely a
knowledge assessment. The results from this will help to
guide staff in making considered decisions regarding
teaching and learning in Religious Education.
Our first Liturgy for the term will take place on Wednesday
9th August and it will be held by the Year 3 class. It will
take place in the Sacred Space and it will begin at
9:00am. All parents and members of our community are
invited to join with the Year 3 students and then stay on
for the morning tea that will follow.
Thank you to the many parents who have taken notice of
the new sign in the carpark and followed the footpaths
rather than walk through the car park. It is important that
our children stay safe in this very dangerous area. Thank
you to the Parents and Friends Association who have
taken on a lead role in this and sent home a letter last
week with the newsletter.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with
thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all
understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7)

YEAR 4 NEWS
The Year 4 children have settled straight back to work
with ease and they have already produced some
outstanding work. Like every other term this will be a very
busy one. We have our class assembly in Week Four
along with our sports carnivals.
During our Religion work we have been discussing
“Making Jesus Real” in our school. The children spoke
about how it is good to give things to people and not to
always worry about receiving something in return; that
giving to people makes you feel happy and special. On
that note, during our art lesson the children created some
beautiful decorated rocks and their suggestion was to give
them to the pre-primary and kindergarten children. Many
of the Year 4 children participated in ‘WA Rocks’ during
the school holidays where rocks are decorated with your
postcode written on the back and you drop them at parks
for other children to find and then you either keep them or
re drop them at another area. Needless to say next week
Matthew Gibney’s Kindy / Pre-primary area will be
rocked.

Religious Education News NAIDOC WEEK LITURGY Matthew Gibney will be celebrating NAIDOC (National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee) Week beginning with a liturgy Monday 31
st July in the
large Undercover Area. We hope that parents and families will come along to celebrate with us. NAIDOC WEEK is normally in our school holidays (2nd to 9th July). The theme for NAIDOC Week in 2017 is Our Languages Matter. The 2017 theme - Our Languages Matter - aims to emphasise and celebrate the unique and essential role that Indigenous languages play in cultural identity, linking people to their land and water and in the transmission of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, spirituality and rites, through story and song. PERFORMING ARTS MASS Last Friday Mr Powell and I attended the 2017 Performing Arts Mass. This was the official opening of the state-wide celebration of the Arts in Western Australian Catholic Schools. We were accompanied by Patrick and Kiera from Yr 6, who carried our school banner as part of the opening procession. The Mass included a choir from Corpus Christi College, musicians from Newman College, actors from Mazenod and dancers from St Bridget’s.

YEAR 6 NEWS
On Thursday, 20th July the Year 6 students went to
Mazenod College to watch the school musical ‘Little Shop
of Horrors.’ Here are some reviews from some Year 6
students:
I thought the Little Shop of Horrors was a great play that
was very entertaining. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the
performance. The students from Mazenod and St Brigid’s
were a very talented group and, therefore, put on a great
show. Montanna and Tioni
I thought the play was very good and the way it was set
up was spectacular. The actors played their part so well.
The singing there was so good and a lot of the kids there
have a lot of talent that showcased so well during the
performance. Eleni
Little Shop of Horrors was amazing. I really enjoyed it, I
haven’t seen the movie but I’m sure it will be amazing.
The twists were also my favourite part of the play. Go and
watch the movie and you’ll be amazed. Matthew
Little Shop of Horrors was a mystery play with a lot of
twists and turns. The plant is impressive and is a great
piece of art. It is based on the 19th December 1986
movie. My favourite bit was at the end. You will jump right
out of your skin. Mackenzie
Melissa Hibben
Thank you to Mrs Pescud and Mr Moore, from the Kalamunda Rangers, for running a Tee ball clinic during the students PE time. All students were engaged and had lots of fun. If students are interested in playing, see the flyers around the school.
Miss Andersen.
SPORTS NEWS
PRE-PRIMARY NEWS I hope everyone had a great holiday and ready for
another busy term! The children have settled back into
the third term with ease and they are already producing
some beautiful work! On our return to school we have
been celebrating ‘Naidoc Week’, which took place in the
holidays, and we have been reading and talking about
‘Dreamtime Stories’. During the holidays our ‘Nature
Garden’ was upgraded and the children are thoroughly
enjoying balancing on the swinging bridge and over-sized
logs! The children are making great progress with their
literacy work and they are able to recognise many sight
words in their library books and take home readers. Keep
it up Pre-Primary! Have a great week!

SCHOOL STAGE SET-UP HELPERS
REQUIRED
The school has 3-4 occasions throughout the year
where we require assistance in setting up our stage
for events. The stage set-up requires 4-6 people for
about 30 minutes for set-up and the same time for
pack-up immediately after the event. If you are able
to add your name and contact number to a list for
stage assistance please let Michael Belletty know
through the P&F email address which is
[email protected] or you can ring or SMS
Michael on 0407 772 195 to add yourself to the list.
Our next 2 events that need stage set-up
assistance are:
Matthew Gibney Day - set-up
Wednesday 25th October.
End of Year Concert - set-up
Wednesday 29th November.
Both set-ups will commence immediately after
school

In Year 2 this week we are learning all about fractions.
The students are investigating how we use fractions in
both maths and everyday life.
Thank you to those parents who have helped with the
book exchange. We still need volunteers from week 4
