US Demo Tour is Underway! For 2009 we decided to hit the road in the US and bring our full range of products to your local spot, offering FREE DEMOS throughout the season! For March we found refuge from this never-ending winter in Texas. After a cold start, the wind finally came back and we’ve seen a variety of conditions, from flat-water blasting and freestyle on the bay-side to head high waves in the gulf. The guys at Worldwinds set up an awesome day of demos and a Q&A session with the editors of both Windsurfing and Windsport Magazines; if you missed us in Texas be sure to drop by Worldwinds throughout the season to inquire about and/or rent any sails in our line, they have an awesome set up right on the beach with sails rigged and ready to go at Bird Island Basin all season long. Next month I’ll be heading down to Punta San Carlos, Baja, with Legends and Globals for anyone to try. For more questions on where I’ll be doing demos throughout the season, feel free to email me any time at [email protected].

Time flies when you’re having fun.I must be getting old because a month passes like a day. Just the other day in Church I was reflecting how It seemed like I just came out of Church, but it had already been a week. Well, I guess that’s why they say “time flies when you’re having fun.” .....

I’ve spent most of the month of March doing some serious spring cleaning. As boring as that may sound, to me it has been one of the most cleansing and fulfilling things I’ve done in quite some time. I was able to move my 20 foot container next to my 40 foot container and clean up the rust and paint ‘em up and add a roof. In the process of moving I had to start digging through and found so much stuff to organize, throw away, sell or give away. There were tools that still worked and all kinds of goodies. But most importantly it gave me many moments of reflection on the setting up shop here in Cabo Verde in the past years and what the future has to hold.

As much as cleaning house has been fulfilling, I still need my fix and have been getting it in front of the windsurf center here in Cabo Verde pretty much every afternoon on either my 8.4 or my 9.2. Coupled with my new Magnum 83, I’ve been having some serious blasting sessions and just fiddling around with the tuning of the new TR-5s, which I’m very very satisfied with. Light wind was a real challenge for me last year, but with my new boards, I am quite looking forward to racing in the light wind conditions.

I leave in a couple days to Maui and it has been a year since I’ve been to Maui, the single longest time away from Maui since I was moved there as a kid, so I’m very excited to get back with my family and step up the training and testing and go mix it up with the best in the business.

Thanks a lot,Josh Angulo, CV-1

Taty Frans raced from Bonaire to CuracaoBonaire windsurf pro, Elton “Taty” Frans raced from Bonaire to Curacao on March 29. He successfully beat the previous record of 4 hours by arriving in Jan Thiel 2 hours and 15 minutes after departing BOPEC in Bonaire. Taty was racing to raise money for Erwin Muller, a dive master and the 4 hour record holder for the sail from Bonaire to Curacao almost twenty years ago. Muller suffered a massive stroke in Jan. and has been in Curacao for medical treatment. Erwin needs rehab and home modifications all very costly. Because Erwin is a former windsurfer it made sense to have a windsurf fundraiser. Spearheaded by many including Elvis Martinus the race occurred March 28.

Taty had dreamed of sailing between the two islands. No stranger to long distance events, Taty circumnavigated Bonaire last year. For this fundraiser challenge he sailed his 7.6 Maui Sail and his 122 liter Starboard Isonic Board. He left early in the morning from the northern tip of Bonaire.under 15-20 knot winds. The waves were 2.5-3.0 meters at times. A small flotilla of support boats assisted Taty. Taty met a hero’s welcome in Curacao including a guest appearance by Prime Minister Mrs. De Jongh- Elhage and his friend, Erwin Muller. It was a grande finale to support a fellow man of the sea, Muller.

The race could not have happened without the support of Habitat Bonaire, Plaza Resort/Toucan Dive Bonaire, Bistro de Paris, Ivo and many friends on the boats, Michael and Miguel Obersi, Elvis Martinus and the entire windsurf community in Bonaire and Curacao.

Calema Midwinters and training on MauiMarch was a very good month for me. I did the Midwinters Formula event at Tinho’s place in Florida and won it. We organised a free clinic that almost everybody at the event took. We had only two days of wind but good enough to see the results of all the hard work of February. Some very good European riders were there plus some other good Brazilian guys.

It’s not easy to train formula when you have every day almost 30 knots. So we had to be very alert to any time the wind seemed to back down on the north shore of Maui. Many days I went to the harbour early in the morning on my own, trying to get some lighter winds, but sometimes I could only put twenty minutes in. I did some training with Phil out from Kanaha too. So i am pretty happy about that.

Great training time on MauiGreat days here in Maui !! I’ve been sailiing everyday with my new TR-5’s.These sails are even better than TR-4’s. They are very easy to rig, you just need to use it in the recommended downhaul (DH) and the sail will be perfectly tuned. I spent one week sailing with the TR-5 6.3 in very strong winds and this sail is stable and fast. I also tested the big sizes: 7.6 and 8.4. They are all very nice sails.

We had some nice days on the Legends. The wave sailing here is always fun for me. Sometimes I was doing some wave sailing in the morning and afternoon some slalom with Peter and the other guys. We had some buoys for practice jibes. I hope the wind stays like this for the next days !!!

See you on the water !!Gabriel Browne BRA-50

Slalom training all the timeIn the month of March I returned to Maui and started tuning all my new racing equipment that I was able to pick up from the Maui Sails loft in Haiku. In all excitement I could start trying all the sizes and tuning them for the season. The wind has been superb here and we have sailed almost every day. The waves have been exceptionally small for this time of the year; there were few fun sessions at Hookipa wave sailing.

Now I’ve tried the TR-5 (5.5 up to 9.2) I can say that the sails are performing amazingly good! The draft is super stable, you can easily

stand there letting the sail do the work and producing the speed, accelerating from every gust of wind - breathing efficiently along the leach while the soft leading edge gives an easy and forgiving ride. I feel I can take a strong gust of wind without getting lifted and the board is staying nice and flat on the water. The best part is that all the measurements written on the sails are correct and the cambers are rotating easily, so nothing needs to be adjusted. In the end you want to rig the sails easily and spend the

maximum time sailing fast - and that is what these sails are providing. I would invite anyone to jump on the MauiSails and give them a go, for you they are probably also the best you ever tried!

We are already in 2010Maui has kept things interesting the month of March. We started out with some large, but somewhat short period North swells and cool northerly winds. This made for some exciting “victory at sea” type wave sailing. Recently we have been having more moderate swell but very strong trade winds. I don’t recall if I have ever seen so many sub-4.0 metre sails on the North shore. The conditions proved perfect for testing our smaller Legend sail sizes. I even got to sail the 4.2 for a couple of solid days, which doesn’t happen too often. For such a small sail, it showed excellent wind range, staying easy to handle when the gusts came ripping up the wave face, but also showing sufficient softness and low end power to get you through the occasional holes on the inside.

In addition to developing the wavesails, we spent plenty of time working on our specialty freestyle sail, the Loco this month. We’ve had some good communication with Taty Frans and he is providing us with excellent feedback and helping to make the Loco into the cutting edge sail for new-school freestyle maneuvers. The Loco’s have a higher cut foot, moderately flat seam shaping and light-weight but strong, intelligently reinforced construction. We are also adding two new sizes to the 2010 Loco range, a 4.4 and 4.0. It will be exciting to see Taty and these new sails stand out on the PWA freestyle tour this year.

The windiest March everIt’s funny you always get asked about your local spot, “how’s the wind this time of the year”? I always tell people it’s windy in Maui all year round. When you have lived here for over 20 years it really is windy in Maui all the time. Maybe a few weeks during January and February can be lighter, but generally, there is something in the form of wind, whether it’s for Formula, slalom or waves. If you want it, you can go and find it somewhere on the Island.

Ok enough jabba. This March has been super windy, no just 20 knot windy but over 30 knot windy. The beginning of March we had some ballistic Kona winds. You could have sailed either in Kihie in some nice 15 to 20 knots with small swell or on the North shore in 30 plus in some big meaty mast high waves. So for those of you who visited Maui before in the hope of the super strong trades, but only got light 8-15 knots, this March was the time for you to be here.

We have great conditions for testing the wave sails and continue to enjoy the fruits of our labour with the TR-5’s now in full force all over the North shore coast. When people see the TR-5 on the water and rush up to us and want us to put them a quiver aside for pick up later, we know we have a good product. The TR-5 is one of those, it’s a range of sails which people talk about on the beach, “man did you try those new MauiSails yet”? or those new MauiSails race sails look beautiful”. It’s great because we don’t have to say a word, we are just there for people to tell us what they think and how do they get them.

Oh on a personal note. I did the “run to the sun” running race on a relay team. Yes 36 miles uphill for 7 hours. I ran for 14 miles and it took me about 2 hours and 45 minutes. Then last weekend I completed my second Olympic distance triathlon on the Big Island of Hawaii in 2 hours and 37 minutes, finishing 129th out of 800 competitors.

March was in like a lion! There was definitely no mercy in March regarding wind and more wind. It seemed every day was just hammering and challenging everyone and helping to get our team ready for the slalom racing coming up soon.

I’ve been taking addvantage of modern digital photography to record lots of these sessions from a technical point of view. No one would want to look at the endless pictures of twisted leeches and horribly front lit race sails (shows all the load lines!) but these are things that bring the session into the lab for Art and Phil and I to discuss. Most of the electrons get sent back into spacetime unless they make an image we can get something out of (including many revealing ones of the competition). But occasionally some of them get shot just because I think they will look good too.

We are closing in on photo shoot time and also doing lots of work on the full ranges of wave and freestyle sails. With Taty back on board, we have lots to do to help him get what he wants, and expect to see him attacking the discipline with a renewed fervor.

Regarding the slalom training, I am happy to report that Gabriel and Peter have been challenging each other and all others who put themselves into the meat grinder of the short figure eights on the bouys at Stable Road. Both of them are showing great speed and especially fast acceleration out of the turns that is so important for getting anywhere in a real slalom race. In a few days Josh and Gonzalo will be here as well and we can have team races to further the tuning. We are looking forward to an incredibly good year.
