    Big “I” Diversity Council Chair

    It’s my honor to welcome you to New Orleans and our first business and inclusion conference, the Big “I” Level Up Agent Summit! What does it mean to level up? When you level up you take the next step toward your goal. It doesn’t have to be a monumental leap, but it does take determination and a growth mindset. By joining us today, you’ve taken the next step toward a more inclusive and innovative organizational culture.

    Since the inception of the Big “I” Diversity Council, we’ve crafted resources to help the independent agency distribution force serve insurance consumers of today and the future. However, there is still work to do to remain competitive in the current and future global economy.

    At the Big “I” Level Up Summit you will also discover innovative and creative ways to attract and maintain a diverse workforce. In addition, our goal is to help

    you develop leaders and encourage employee engagement at all levels in your organization.

    This event is intentionally designed to equip you with tools, information and resources to build and maintain a diverse workforce and grow your company. Attendees will be shown a series of recent ad campaigns from Fortune 500 companies that will challenge your thinking and expand your horizons. We will also breakdown and analyze current demographic data and attitudinal surveys to see how the country is changing and why agents should identify their own brands to thrive in the future.

    1. Rapid demographic and social change have created an America in which young and old are more different from each other than any generations in our history.

    2. Today’s old skew white and conservative; today’s young skew non-white and progressive. The young believe racial boundaries are porous and gender identities are fluid.

    3. Young women today outpace young men in their educational achievements and career aspirations.

  • Get ready to move your agency forward with tactics and strategies from Fortune 500 diversity strategist Amber Cabral. Shift your mindset and raise your own awareness of some of your unconscious biases so we can implement easy solutions to better navigate the world of inclusivity.

    1. Use inclusive language – Use gender inclusive language and titles. Make sure you use a broad range of references when giving examples to connect to varied interests.

    2. Actively seek diversity – When hiring, promoting or assessing talent, put on your inclusion hat. Consider asking yourself, “who is missing?”

    3. Ask mindful questions – Use broad inquiries as an opportunity to invite participation and establish meaningful connection.

    4. Speak up without laying blame – Don’t let inappropriate behaviors or messages slide, say something. Keep a few techniques in your pocket that help you speak up without laying blame.

    5. Be prepared to apologize – We all make mistakes and missteps when navigating a world of differences. Be prepared to deliver a meaningful apology if you unintentionally offend.
