Given the fact there are many older boats that are able to be fixed up and raced competitively, especially MK IVs, and the fact the class is not growing too fast at this point, it was decided it is more important to be able to secure parts for the Rebel in order to keep those sailing on the water, and allow newcomers to be able to fix up an older boat. While there are many parts available off the shelf that can be used on the Rebel, and Nickels Boat Works can still supply many of the class specific parts such as rudder blades, for various reasons they are unable to provide any new masts. It was determined getting a new mast supplier was key for obvious reasons; if you break a mast you can’t presently replace it. After researching options, no mast supplier would extrude mast tubes to the Rebel Class specifications in limited numbers, they would want a large run of 50 or so masts and someone to pay for them to be held in stock. In addition, the class would have to pay to have a new die made to extrude the spars to our specifications. As this was not a realistic option for the class, we turned our search to use a stock tube already produced in order to reduce costs. The result of our search has resulted in a product used by Zephyr Spar, which is a division of Cape Cod Shipbuilding. After looking at their various offerings we decided on their #2 spar section to be used for our new masts. This decision was made after reviewing the technical details of the spar with Dave Nickels and Neil Robb. For comparative purposes, this mast will be stiffer than the Nickels built spars, but will be more flexible than the old style spars from the MK IV boats and older. In order to keep costs as affordable as possible we have encouraged Zephyr Spar to use as many off the shelf parts and fittings as possible. It has also been decided to build the new mast with in-line spreaders rather than aft swept spreaders in an aim to further reduce costs and simplify the build of the mast. It was discussed there are boats currently sailing with swept and in-line spreaders and there does not appear to be any appreciable difference in speed due to spreader angle. With a stiffer mast section, spreader angle has even less of an effect on the bend of the spar itself.

NEW MAST SUPPLIER BY DAN LEON

As many people know we are in need of a new Class builder in the event anyone wants to purchase a new boat.

It was determined getting a new mast supplier was key for obvious reasons; if you break a mast you can’t

presently replace it.

The result of our search has resulted in a product used by Zephyr Spar, which is a division of Cape Cod

Shipbuilding.

REBEL RABBLENew Mast Section continued

Lastly, in order to further reduce costs Zephyr Spar suggested using high tech low stretch halyards rather than wire as we currently use. Their thought is you can reduce the halyard cost and sheave costs if it does not need to handle wire. We have agreed on the main halyard to use low stretch line and the appropriate lower cost masthead fitting and sheave if the overall cost is less than what we currently use. For the jib halyard we will continue to use wire. The other advantage to using high tech rope for the main halyard is you can always splice your own halyards; this is not hard if you follow the splicing guides. I have done this myself on other boats and have saved money.

We are still waiting on the final price from the

builder for a complete cost and anticipate having one brought out to the Nationals this summer for all to see; and for purchase if someone needs one so we don’t have to bring it back to the East Coast. We hope to have it in the $1500-1600 range.

Rebel Rabble Future –

I don’t know about everyone else but I really miss getting up and turning the dial on my TV set. And I also miss picking up my Sunday paper out of the mud puddle at the end of my driveway vs. seeing it on my computer. While obviously I don’t really miss these things, the point is that not all change is bad.

In step with our website updates, the Rebel Rabble will undergo some changes in the near future. Not only will the editor change, but the cost of the Rabble has been a discussion item for several years as one of the significant annual costs for the National Rebel Association, and though the number of Rabbles printed has gone down the cost continues to increase. As a rule the Rebel Association has always maintained that it will provide the Rabble to all active members and to any new boat owner for at least the 1st year. In order to keep operating costs in line and still maintain our commitments to members the decision has been made that this issue of the Rebel Rabble will be the last issue that is completely printed and mailed. Beginning in the fall of 2014 the Rebel Rabble will be primarily distributed electronically via an emailing service. Therefore all members need to contact Neil Robb over the summer to ensure we have your current email addresses. see page 9

REBEL RABBLE

Website update from the Board

Rebel Website Update – For those not aware the Rebel website

(www.rebelsailor.com) will be undergoing a major overhaul very soon. The current site was started by Rebel class members years ago and piece-mealed along for many years after. As technology has changed and the desires for better accessibility via phones, etc. have increased it has become clear that it is time for an overhaul.

The new website is being constructed by Neil Robb our current website manager. Neil will be using up to date open-source software for the construction. Some of the menus will change or be streamlined, but much of the current information will remain available though some links may be removed as a small group has been reviewing the site for several months. The appearance will be more in line with other sailing websites that have been reviewed, and an added feature will be the incorporation of PayPal finance to provide the ability for people to pay dues or make donations online. The overall cost of this change will be minimal thanks to Neil Robb, and the launch date for this change is roughly late May or early June depending on Neil’s progress. Thank you Neil!

29 Mar 14Minutes of the 2014 Spring Meeting.

Commodore Mary Vorel called the meeting to order at 10:09 AM. Roll Call: Allan Vorel, Jason Vanderground, Neil Robb, Kevin Nickels, Mary Vorel, Pat Vorel, Nick Tanis, Janet Rose, George McCargar, Rowan ODougherty, and LeAnne Daglow. Dan Leon via phone. The filing of our 990 IRS tax form will move from the Commodore to the Treasurer effective with the 2013 tax year. Approved by the Board. This does not require any changes to the Constitution or Bi-Laws. The agenda was revised to incorporate the committee meetings as part of the Board Meeting instead of the separate break out sessions. Attendance at the meetings is no longer large enough to use separate committee break out sessions. This change will be continued in future Board meetings. The minutes from the last meeting (Oct 19, 2013) were approved. Nick moved, Kevin 2nd. The treasurer’s report for calendar year 2013 was reviewed and approved. Kevin moved, Al 2nd.

NATIONAL REBEL CLASSKevin moved, Allan seconded to present these nominees at the general membership meeting at the Nationals in July.Technical Committee - Masts - Dan gave us an update on the mast progress. Dave Nickels provided dimensions for building the mast using section #2 from The Zephyr Division of The Cape Cod Shipbuilding Co. Dan authorized using high tech low stretch line for the main halyard but will stay with wire for the jib. Kevin pointed out that although the line will work, it may wear faster than wire. Dan will write an article for the next Rabble to bring the membership up to date on the mast problem and this solution. Neil will prepare the changes required for the Constitution & Bylaws for a membership vote at the meeting in July.

Reconvened at 12:30 pm after lunch. Fabulous lunch from Janet Rose and LeAnne Daglow!

Membership Committee - Website – The MC Scows use Club Express for dues and their website. It would cost us over $900 to use Club Express. Al Vorel said that the Grand Rapids Yacht Club uses Club Express and are not happy with arbitrary changes made by them. After discussion, a motion passed to switch our website to WordPress and use Paypal for dues and contributions. There was discussion to send out copies of the Rabble to certain fleets that used to be active. Also get to Strictly Sail next year. Ask Secretary of State for a list of the Rebel sailors. Quiet Water Symposium is also a good place to visit in the first weekend in March. No action takeRabble – We will start to transition the Rabble to an electronic edition (with paper for those that need it) this year. The Board discussed, and approved, changing the advertizing policy to allow all individuals (members or not) ads for boats, sails, and parts for free. Commercial ads will go by the current fee schedule. Suggestion by Neil that we use an email management service like Vertical Response or MailChimp.com so that we know who is actually opening and using their email currently. Cost is low or free depending on volume.Budget Committee -Trophy discussion – Use perpetual trophies and drop the keepers. This will reduce the registration fee by $25. Continue with 1-10 perpetual trophies and use 11-15 to the first five crews.Youth Committee – Approved $100 to Southport (US Sailing) youth sailing and $150 to Rock Hall youth program. Supporting youth sailing is part of our non-profit charter.

The budget was approved as amended.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:50 PM by Commodore Mary Vorel.

Commodore’s CornerYou know summer is on the way when you get a random

call thinking that you are going to hear from a student's

parent midday in the school day, I'm a teacher for all those

months where I don't get to sail, and I'm pleasantly surprised

to hear a new Rebel owner on the phone. I welcome Tim

and his son to Rebel ownership, and I realize there are many

older boats still in wonderful condition and being passed

around to new families. Not too long before this phone call, I

also received an email about a Rebel available for sale in

Nebraska and thought about how much I would like to find

all of our Rebels and see where they have traveled to since

being made here in Michigan. I'm loving this job so far when

I get to hear from other Rebel sailors that I haven't met yet

and I hope they all eventually learn what a great extended

family the Rebel class is. And I only say that after over 20

years of sailing the Rebel, ever since crewing for a new Rebel

Junior National Champion and then finding myself crewing

for David Nickels of all people when I was only 9 years old,

and winning again, of course.

As a mostly new team of leaders since the last nationals,

Kevin Nickels, Dan Leon and I are trying to do everything

we can to make changes that will renew interest in our sport,

and especially interest in the Rebel class. We are definitely

open to suggestions! Thank you to Neil Robb, as secretary/

treasurer, for staying on and dealing with all of our ideas and

desire to make changes right away and throughout the

winter months.

The "Rebel Sailors - Past and Present" group on

Facebook has been a buzz of discussion of regattas already

and I'm getting excited for another great season.

1. The Grand Rapids fleet is starting off the season

May 10 at 11:30 am for a Mast Raising Party if anyone is

in the area and would like to know how to raise a mast or

gather socially and connect. If you're not in town, a mast

raising party is a great way to have more than a few eyes

checking out your rig, making sure it's sailing ready, and

maybe help you out when you have to put the rig up a few

times when you forget to do something like put your wind

vane up the first time or take the red flag off the mast.

2. If you don't get to sail much at your yacht club,

Grand Rapids Yacht Club also has 6 races planned over

the Memorial Day weekend and it would be good practice

before the national event in July. Racing begins each day at

1:30 pm.

 3. One place that deserves all kinds of bragging rights

is Des Plaines Yacht Club on Lake Opeka, just outside

O'Hare Airport. This regatta will prep you for the tight

quarters of sailing at the nationals a couple weeks later! If

you have not been there yet, you need to show up for their

regatta on June 28-29. One of my favorite places to say

I've sailed, and the people are top notch! Miss my friends

the Leeneys, Quiniffs, and Washburns!

4. Take a long weekend trip to Grand Rapids, MI to

sail the Rebel Nationals on July 11-13 on Reeds Lake. We

have claimed Beer City USA and have all kinds of

delicious breweries everywhere throughout the city, the

beautiful Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park is

constantly adding new things to see, and museums with all

kinds of knowledge of Grand Rapids & Michigan at the

Public Museum, presidential level Gerald R. Ford

Museum, and a very entertaining Children's Museum.

Throughout the week and weekend, Nickel Creek, Jackson

Page 11: May 1, 2014 REBELrebelsailor.com/14RabbleMay.pdf · Spar suggested using high tech low stretch halyards rather than wire as we currently use. Their thought ... mud puddle at the end

REBEL RABBLEBrowne, Gavin DeGraw & Matt Nathanson are playing at

the Gardens too.

5. I love saying that I've sailed across New Jersey and New

York, which you can only say if you've been to Greenwood

Lake. They always host a great event in August, and they

leave plenty of time for you to visit New York City, the

Statue of Liberty, Orange County Choppers (OCC), West

Point, or hike the Appalachian Trail.6

6. . September 6-7 can bring you back to Grand Rapids

again for our fall regatta. It might be a nice, warm fall

regatta or one more weekend of pure summer! Always

another great weekend of sailing!

7. One last Rebel regatta of the season in late September

takes you to a long-standing Rebel fleet on Clark Lake, MI

and you can even bring along your other sailing friends who

may sail Sunfish, Lasers, Interlakes, Buccaneers, and

Wayfarers. You will NOT go hungry at this regatta as they

have a wonderful team of ladies who pile on the homemade

cooking! It's also a LOT of fun to be on the water, either

freezing or one last warm weekend before fall, with so many

great sailors from all these fleets! It's like a reunion for all

since some have been attending this regatta for a few

decades.

So there are 7 events where you can meet and greet old

friends and make new ones! I can't wait to see how 2014

unfolds into another season of great fun and Rebel sailing.

NATIONAL REBEL CLASSRebel Rabble Future – continued

I used to think this was a bad thing, that I would miss holding a piece of paper with other organizations. And yet since these changes I have realized that I create a folder on my computer and save the emailed copies of items I want and I can always find them vs. looking high and low throughout the house, and they don’t get coffee spilled on them. And if I want to print a picture or page I can do that as well. And nowadays if people really want it in the bathroom the electronic tablets can go there too. This said, if you adamantly need/want a printed copy, a hard copy will be sent to you this fall but this needs to be communicated to Neil Robb as well.

Beginning in 2015 there will be a nominal fee added to the membership registrations for printed copies of the Rabble. This change is in line with changes made by many associations and will help control costs without reducing quality of service to the organization. We hope all members will support this effort and receive this change with understanding of the reasons.

Dear Mr Robb,

My name is Karl Durfey and this past year my father Gene and I bought a 1960 Rebel (Sail 1161). At the time we had no clue what a Rebel was, we just new that we had always wanted to learn to sail and this boat was within our price range.

Living in Arizona isn’t optimal location for learning to sail, but once every couple of months we make the 3 hour drive from Tucson to Lake Pleasant (north of Phoenix) and spend the day at the lake. We always have a wonderful day and needless to say, we’ve fallen in love with our new boat. She’s old, haggard, not much to look at but she’s ours and we love her ... she’s our “Happy Day”.

... I’m look forward to learning more about our racing class and getting to know the community, even if it is from a distance.

Karl Durfey

Hey Karl & Gene. my dad Lee Nowak & I used to race 1160 up until 4187. Best of winds & weather. Bruce
