And there were women like Susanna, falsely accused of infidelity by two elders who threatened her with the accusation of adultery if they did not get their way with her (Daniel 13/1-25), and the woman who was dragged before Jesus accused of being caught in the very act of adultery in John (John 8/1-11). We respectfully acknowledge the

Turrbal people, as the traditional owners

and caretakers of the land which is the

Toowong Catholic Parish.

We acknowledge the Elders, past and

present. May we, too, be good stewards of

this land.

Women Of Courage

(When I think of women who faced adversity, I think of my own mother, widowed at the age of 45 with six children, after running Dad’s house painting business for three years while he languished

in hospital and then supporting the three youngest of us with her sewing skills until she lost that with her eyesight before the age of 60!

I suppose as you get older you appreciate more the sacrifices that are made to give you a happy and protected childhood.)

The Scriptures celebrate and tell the story of many women who face adversity with courage and determination.

You could start with the childless, so-called ‘barren’, women such as Sarah, the wife of Abraham (Genesis 18/9-15) , the unnamed wife of Manoah who was the mother

of Samson (Judges 13/2-5) and Hannah the mother of Samuel (1 Samuel c1), women on whom Luke modelled his story for Elizabeth, the cousin of Mary and mother of John the Baptist (Luke 1/5-14).

Then there were the women who crossed the ethnic divide, like Rahab the prostitute who supported the Israelites in their conquest of Jericho and so enabled them to find a foothold in Palestine (Joshua c2), or Ruth the Moabite who stayed loyal to her mother-in-law Naomi in returning to Israel and ended up being the great-grandmother of David (Ruth c1, 4/17), and the Syro-Phoenician woman who taught Jesus a thing or two about who really are God’s children (Mark 7/24-30).

There were women in positions of power such as Deborah, one of the early judges of Israel (Judges 4/4-16), and Esther, the wife of the Persian King Ahasuerus (Esther 4/1-17), who, at great risk to themselves, used their position of influence to save the nation of Israel, as well as the well-to-do women who supported Jesus’ ministry (Luke 8/1-3).

There were women who were victims of male violence or indifference such as Hagar, Abraham’s slave girl, who became pregnant to give him an heir and then found herself banished from his life (Genesis 16/1-16), or Tamar, David’s daughter, who was raped by her brother but refused to hide the fact (2 Samuel 13/1-20), or the woman who risks the insults of the onlookers to anoint the feet of Jesus (Luke 7/36-50).

There were women who struggled with illness such as Miriam, Moses’ sister, struck down with leprosy (Numbers

12/1-15), as well as Mary of Magdala a victim of mental illness from whom Jesus cast out the 7 demons (Luke 8/2).

There were women who use their feminine attractiveness to overcome their nations enemies: like Judith a young widow who not only argues against surrender to the Assyrians, but physically cuts off the head of their commander after she has got him intoxicated (Judith 13/1-17), and Rebekah who encourages Jacob to steal his brother’s birthright as first-born by deceiving their father (Genesis c27).

And there were women like Susanna, falsely accused of infidelity by two elders who threatened her with the accusation of adultery if they did not get their way with her (Daniel 13/1-25), and the woman who was dragged before Jesus accused of being caught in the very act of adultery in John (John 8/1-11).

There are many examples of strong, passionate and compassionate women in the pages of the Bible who are genuine models for us in the following of our faith.

First Eucharist commenced during the week with (online) Parent Information meetings.

plus attend online sessions with Fr Wrex and Allison King (due to current restrictions).

All enquiries to Allison King, Parish Pastoral Associate & Sacramental Co-ordinator on

[email protected]

Parishioners are asked to please pray for the candidates and their families at this time.

PRAYING THE ROSARY IN MAY. Further to last weekend’s parish newsletter, below is the second prayer composed by Pope Francis, which can be said after praying the Rosary —

“We fly to your protection, O Holy Mother of God”

In the present tragic situation, when the whole world is prey to suffering and anxiety, we fly to you, Mother of God and our Mother, and seek refuge under your protection.

Virgin Mary, turn your merciful eyes towards us amid this coronavirus pandemic. Comfort those who are distraught and mourn their loved ones who have died, and at times are buried in a way that grieves them deeply. Be close to those who are concerned for their loved ones

who are sick and who, in order to prevent the spread of the disease, cannot be close to them. Fill with hope those who are troubled by the uncertainty of the future and the

consequences for the economy and employment. Mother of God and our Mother, pray for us to God, the Father of mercies, that this great

suffering may end and that hope and peace may dawn anew. Plead with your divine Son, as you did at Cana, so that the families of the sick and the victims be comforted, and their hearts be opened to confidence and trust.

Protect those doctors, nurses, health workers and volunteers who are on the frontline of this emergency, and are risking their lives to save others. Support their heroic effort and grant them strength, generosity and continued health.

Be close to those who assist the sick night and day, and to priests who, in their pastoral concern and fidelity to the Gospel, are trying to help and support everyone.

Blessed Virgin, illumine the minds of men and women engaged in scientific research, that they may find effective solutions to overcome this virus.

Support national leaders, that with wisdom, solicitude and generosity they may come to the aid of those lacking the basic necessities of life and may devise social and economic solutions inspired by farsightedness and solidarity.

Mary Most Holy, stir our consciences, so that the enormous funds invested in developing and stockpiling arms will instead be spent on promoting effective research on how to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

Beloved Mother, help us realise that we are all members of one great family and to recognise the bond that unites us, so that, in a spirit of fraternity and solidarity, we can help to alleviate countless situations of poverty and need. Make us strong

in faith, persevering in service, constant in prayer. Mary, Consolation of the afflicted, embrace all your children in distress and pray that God will stretch out his all-powerful

hand and free us from this terrible pandemic, so that life can serenely resume its normal course. To you, who shine on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope, do we entrust ourselves,

O Clement, O Loving, O Sweet Virgin Mary. Amen.

PARISH TASK FORCE REPORT. * Social support: Thank you to the parishioners who have already responded to our various requests for support. We are still seeking cash donations for St Vincent de Paul Toowong, toiletries and other non-perishable goods for homeless and registration of interest to accommodate international students enrolled at ACU. * The Road out of Restrictions: This week the Australian Catholic Bishops are putting together a proposal for the Federal and State Governments to consider about easing restrictions on church gatherings. It is hoped that churches will soon be able to open for private prayer & for small numbers of people to gather (with social distancing and hygiene practices in place). We await further information and once guidelines are provided; the Task Force will consider how best to implement changes to suit the needs of the parish. Please refer to parish website for further information. - Louise Wellington (PPC Chair)

PPC meeting will be held online this Thursday 14 May at 7.30pm.

BE AWARE—SCAM EMAILS. Currently (during the COVID-19) there are very high levels of cyber-crime activity. Parishioners are asked to be wary of emails claiming to be from Fr Wrex (or other clergy), particularly if they have not come from parish’s email address: [email protected]. We are again aware of a few emails being received appearing to be from Fr Wrex but are from fake email addresses (email may be asking the recipient for help or to supply ‘Google Play’ / ‘iTunes’ cards); these are scams! Please delete any such email immediately & do not reply or send any ‘cards’.

PARISH PLANNED GIVING. Thank you to the parishioners who have recently contacted the parish office to amend their TG envelope giving to electronic options (credit card / direct debit) or arranged to deliver their envelope contributions to the Parish Office. If you wish to discuss your options, change your regular giving or make a one—off contribution, please email [email protected], Attention: Monica Florence, Parish Secretary. We thank you for your continued support of our parish during these unprecedented times.

PARISH OFFICE HOURS. During these current times please call the parish office before visiting to confirm it is attended. Thank you.

Please note: Any inclusions for the Parish newsletter should be marked to the attention of Parish Secretary & received, by email or note, at Parish Office no later than 12noon Thursdays. Thank you.

ARCHDIOCESAN INFORMATION

SMALL BLESSINGS CAMPAIGN has been developed by the Archdiocese of Brisbane. Over the Easter weekend many people gave and received blessings, big & small. Just a few of these are shared with you below & hope you will join the campaign by also sharing some of the small blessings in your life at www.smallblessings.com.au During this time we can all benefit from the hope that comes from experiencing, seeing and creating small blessings for others.

The following is from Archdiocese of Brisbane’s social media during the week— ‘While the COVID-19 has affected us greatly we know that small acts of love and kindness are more important than ever. Pope Francis reminds us of this “Rivers do not drink their own water… and flowers do not spread their fragrance for themselves. Living for others is a rule of nature. Life is good when you are happy; but much better when others are happy because of you.” What can you do this week to show your love & kindness for someone in the community?’

While we are unable to attend Mass and receive the Eucharist,

we can pray the following prayer —

Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love you above all things and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at

least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and

unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen.
