Books on Bases is a program created by Blue Star Families to positively impact the lives of military children through the power of reading. The generosity of partners such as

Random House, Sleeping Bear Press, and BAE Systems allows the delivery of books to military children, base libraries, Department of Defense schools, and military-impacted

public schools.

Blue Star Families (BSF) brought this popular program to encourage stronger family ties and literacy to Lackland Elementary School, with participation from our honored guest readers Congressman Charles Gonzalez, Joint Base San Antonio officials and KLRN.

All Students in Pk-6th grade were read to and then given a free book. Blue Star Families awarded a Nook to Darlene Chamorro for her winning essay on, "What it means to be a military child”. Dr. Roper was also presented a Nook

on behalf of the students who attend Lackland ISD.

News from s2s! The Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) invited London Slater to

speak about Stacey’s s2s program at the Regional Meeting of the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) held in San Antonio.

London presented side by side with the President and CEO of MCEC, Dr. Mary Keller. London talked about his experience as a military student – what it’s like to move, how the military life affects his family, and how

the s2s program helps new students as they transition in to Stacey.

London represented Stacey well and received a certificate of appreciation from MCEC, a MCEC coin and a personal thank you note

from Dr. Mary Keller congratulating London on his presentation.

All students, parents, teachers, and staff of LISD are invited to a Spring Concert

presented by the Stacey Jr/Sr High School Chorus and

the Eagle Band on

Thursday, May 19th at 6:30 PM in the

Lackland Elementary School

Lisa, was born and raised in San Antonio. In 1999, I moved to North Carolina. I married a United States Marine and was stationed at Cherry Point. For the past ten years, I have worked as a director and program coordinator for an elementary school in Havelock NC. I will be completing my bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education (birth-kindergarten) at the end of this month. I have a 3 yr old daughter, named Avery. I am so grateful to be a part of an awesome school. I look forward to an exciting school year.

May is Better Hearing and Speech Month

Helping People Communicate

Speech and language disorders can affect

anyone at any age. Millions of infants, children, and adults in America suffer from a communication or swallowing disorder. Whether it’s a difficulty in swallowing or a dis- order such as stuttering, delayed language, or a voice

problem, a person’s ability to learn and interact with others can be affected. If you suspect you or a loved one may be

experiencing a communication or swallowing disorder, consult a speech-language pathologist.

CREATIVE WRITING The following is a creative writing sample from a

kindergartener in Mrs. Black’s SFA Class (Mrs. Solis' homeroom student). Her name is Jaime Taff and this is her

tall tale. Enjoy!

The Cupcake DogThe cupcake dog loved

cupcakes. Every day he ate cupcakes!! One day the

cupcake dog turned into a cupcake. So, he licked his frosting on him, and then he took a bite of him. Then, he took a bite of himself again. A couple of minutes later, he was dead. Then he went to Doggie Heaven and stayed

there. The End

1.Were were you born? I was born in Hardheim, a small town in central Germany. My family lived there until I was ten when we moved to Frankfurt. 2. What is your favorite movie? It is difficult to choose just one because I love movies, especially foreign ones. The Visit, an oldie in black and white with Ingrid Bergman and Anthony Quinn is among my all-time favorites. It is the story of Claire, a jilted woman who returns to her hometown to take revenge on a former lover who abandoned her many years ago. He has become a prosperous, respected citizen of the town, but Claire is now a millionaire's widow who has been planning his demise for years. This psychological thriller shows how she is able to turn the town, including his family against him step-by-step. First, the law-abiding citizens are outraged at her suggestion to punish this "innocent" man, but her cunning and her wealth are able to buy the town, person by person, until in the end, they convince themselves of his guilt and kill him. 3. If you only had one day left to live what would you do? I would spend some time with my family, and the rest in prayer. 4. What is your favorite thing to do in your free time? I enjoy spending time with my family, and I love to read, to travel, and to eat (it shows!) 5. How long have you worked here? I have worked at Stacey High School for five years, and my only regret is that I didn't start sooner! 6. What was your favorite part of working at Stacey Jr./Sr. High? I think Stacey students are great. They generally are honest, friendly, and outgoing. They are well-behaved, respectful, and self-confident. But what I like best about them, is the respect and acceptance they show to each other. 7. What is your biggest fear? For myself what I fear the most is getting a lingering debilitating illness. As for this great country, I am afraid we may experience a moral and intellectual decline. 8. If you got a free vacation to anywhere, where would you go? Since this question does not set limits, I'd like to explore all the countries I have not yet visited, and I'd like to go back to some of the communist countries to see how they have changed. 9. If you were a superhero, what super power would you have? I would choose to be “Lewa”, and my superpower would be levitation. Imagine what you could accomplish! 10. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? Anything but a teacher! I really disliked school, and to think that I ended up spending practically the rest of my life in school. What I did want to be is a writer, but hey, there is still time...

One Week Away….Mercado!!!! Tuesday, May 24th

Gathering up all the goodies and gearing up for the big day. Students have worked hard on all of the projects. Each grade level acting as the early natives who roamed

the land and started the first markets. Today, especially in Mexico's most underdeveloped regions, people still may be seen arriving at the weekly market after

walking long distances along footpaths, or coming by horse.

1)How long have you been at Stacey? 8 years 2)What college did you attend? I received a Bachelor’s in Education from Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro and a Master’s in Counseling and Guidance from Texas A & M in Kingsville. I also attended the University of North Florida while I was in the Navy. 3)Where did you grow up? I grew up in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and moved to the US in 1992. 4)What is one of your favorite childhood memories? Hmmm… I have many, but the time I spent with family, cousins, aunts, and uncles is the memory I cherish and miss the most. 5)What is one of the hardest parts about being a counselor? The hardest part is to keep up with the information about the special programs to make sure that we are in legal compliance with the state. 6)What is one of the most rewarding parts of being a counselor? It is a blessing to have a job where I can make a difference in someone’s life every day. It could be a teacher who needs a smile, a student or parent who needs to talk, a student who needs special attention due to hardship or a student who needs academic monitoring due to grades. 7)What do you like to do in your free time? I like to read, spend time with my daughters and if I am very bored (I am kidding!) I like to go out and run! 8)Have you ever worked at any other schools? If so where and what did you do? I worked at Dwight Middle School as a Physical Education teacher. 9)If you weren't a counselor what do you think you might want to be? I would probably have a job that has to do with traveling. I love to meet people from different countries and learn about different cultures! 10)What is the best part of being a counselor at Stacey? The best part is working with an amazing and competent group of people! I also enjoy working at a small school. This way I really get to know the students as individuals and be able to serve them more effectively.
