While the cold or damp days of winter keep many of us inside, and the spring rainssoak our enthusiasm for fresh air, summer is an almost constant invitation to live out-doors. There’s only one rule to follow: make the most of every minute!
For some of us, this means spending most of our spare time on our knees among theflower beds and vegetable plots. There’s no better way of getting back to nature thanplunging our hands into the earth.
For others, swimming pools are an obsession. What joy it is to swim lengths or do aqua-fitness, play volleyball or water-polo in the water, or just float on an inflatable mattresswhile soaking up the sun. Just don’t forget the sunscreen!
Then there are the food lovers, who associate summer with patio living and outdoorcooking on the barbecue. Steaks, kebabs, ribs, and other delicious treats become greatexcuses for family gatherings oral fresco dinners with friends.Cocktails are sipped slowly asthe shadows get longer andthen the deck is lit for outdoordining in all the wonderfulpleasures of a warm summerevening. Isn’t life great?
Of course, this is the time forfans of the hammock to get asmuch lazing and swinging timein as they can, accompanied bya book, a glass of lemonade, and a smile on their face. Andthere’s nothing like a little sies-ta between chapters. Why not? It’s summer after all!
Everyone outside!

Did you know that most potential buyersform an opinion of the home they are visit-ing in the first 90 seconds? That 90 percentof people are incapable of imagining livingin a home that has not been prepped?
There are some very specific techniquesyou can apply to neutralize your propertyso that it will please the majority of buyers, influence the sale price, and reduce thelength of time your home is on the market.
The first step in the “staging” of yourhome is to create new arrangements withyour furniture. This will highlight the pos-itive aspects of your living space, such asopen areas, ease of circulation, size, light, and the main purpose of each room. It isimportant to create as much room as pos-
sible so that visitors have an impressionof space and dimension.
To do this, keep only the furniture neces-sary for daily life, such as the kitchen ordining room table, the sofa, chairs, andother decorative elements that are bothsimple and neutral. Walls, shelving units, and kitchen counters should be populatedvery sparingly. Art works, family photo-graphs, and ornaments are all elementsthat could put potential buyers off.Personal items tend to distract visitors andprevent them from being able to imagineliving in your home.
The idea is to depersonalize your rooms,to make them neutral by opting for awhite wall instead of your beloved flow-
ery wallpaper, for example, which noteveryone will like. Choose a restrained, elegant decor that will attract a youngcouple as much as a family.

Every well-informed gardener cantell you that the success of a beau-tiful garden depends to a largeextent on the planting stage. There’s nothing simpler thanplanting but, by following thesefew suggestions, your chances ofsuccess are much greater.
• Ideally, choose a cloudy or evena rainy day as young plants don’tlike the sun’s hot rays.• Wait until the soil has had time
to warm up and nish before the cool of theevening.• Be sure to give enough room to your plants. Forexample, some trees and conifers that t in to thetrunk of your car when you buy them, develop
into giants when mature.• Still on the subject of trees, it’s worthwhile to have them deliveredas it’s not recommended to transport them on the roof of your car.The new shoots of the trees risk drying out with speed.• If you buy several dierent varieties of perennials, don’t forget toidentify each plant with the help of a tag as it isn’t always easy torecognize them as the summer goes by.• Plants with bare roots should be planted during their dormant peri-od, either at the beginning of the planting season or in the autumn, whereas those that are sold in containers can be put in the ground atanytime throughout the gardening season.
Some planting tips
Young children always love doing their
share when it comestime for planting.
Source of life and freshness, the pres-ence of water in any landscape cre-ates beautiful movement, a place fordreaming. Whether it’s of modest orgrandiose dimensions, the water gar-den quickly becomes one of the cen-tral features of the garden allowingthe creation of many varied settings.
A pond can t into just about any type of land-scape. We just need to take the necessary time toplan the work well. If the garden is well conceivedfrom the beginning, its upkeep will be easy. New
gardeners sometimes have the tendency to plan a rst pond that istoo small. You must realize that the smaller the dimensions, the moreof a challenge the environmental balance will be. For example, asmall pond whose area is less than 5 square metres needs a lot moremaintenance and care than a bigger pond. Water quality is also mucheasier to regulate in a larger pond.
Don’t hesitate to ask advice from neighbours who already have awater garden, or from your local garden centre, regarding yourchoice of plants. The selection of plants has to be made in functionwith the size of the pond.
Depth is also important, especially in our country where the rigoursof winter are very real. The depth should be at least 90 cm in themiddle, especially if you have sh. If the water isn’t deep enoughthere is a good chance they will die.
Put in some water!
Vegetation surroundinga water garden looks
more alive.
Nothing is more pleasing to a gar-dener than to detect a scent oatingin their little corner of paradise.Because of the huge choice that isavailable these days, you can nowcreate a scented garden withoutupsetting the structure of the existinggarden. One important thing: makethe wind and the soil your allies.
For example, scents do not stay in agarden where the wind is pervasive. It’s important, therefore, to create a screen against the prevailingwind. As well, you need to build a small wall tothe west or south of your garden where you can
cultivate plants that release their scent in the heat.
Don’t hesitate to cultivate fragrant plants in pots as well. By placingdelicately scented plants at head height, the visitor will easily detectall their subtle aromas.
Last point: take into consideration that some plants release their per-fume at nightfall. Don’t deprive yourself of this type of ower whenplanning your scented garden. Petunias, stocks, jasmine and honey-suckle are good choices.
Last piece of advice: don’t forget to cultivate scented plants alongthe pathways or underneath a window. The lilac is a good example.A real pleasure for all the senses!
A garden of athousand scents
Heliotrope; an annualwith a very subtle
vanilla perfume.
It’s not rare to hear gardeningenthusiasts, when stopping infront of a beautiful rose bush, exclaim: “It’s very beautiful, butit’s too much work!” Indeed, forthese people, the rose bush is afragile plant with all its diseasessuch as black spot and powderymildew. It’s not that long ago
that this problem was a reality but the situationhas changed a lot over the past few years.
First of all the hybridizers, that is to say the spe-cialists who work to create new varieties, have
done a remarkable job in developing roses which are much moredisease-resistant. Certainly, it’s not perfect yet, but the progress real-ized over the past few years makes it an error to deprive ourselvesof roses. It’s not surprising now to hear informed gardeners repeat-ing that a garden without roses isn’t a garden at all.
You should also know that preventive treatments are possible whileat the same time respecting our mistreated environment. To preventthe appearance of black spot on the leaves of the rose bush or pow-dery mildew the length of its stem, all you have to do is put 15 mlof bicarbonate of soda and the same amount of insecticidal soap in4 litres of water. Generously spray the foliage of your rose busheswith this mixture and you won’t have any problems. This treatmentshould be repeated approximately every two weeks, from May toSeptember.
R oses, theorganic way
Organic methods do exist to prevent
your rose bushes from becoming diseased.
Grasses are becoming more and more popu-lar with gardening enthusiasts. It’s the idealplant to bring movement to a owerbed andit’s especially good at giving a garden thenatural air which more and more of us wantto achieve. Certain varieties of grasses canalso be used as a screen to hide a less attrac-tive part of the garden and could even replacea hedge which needs to be revived.
For a long time now, grasses have been giventhe cold shoulder in Canadian gardens. It wasonly in the 1970s that we began to feel a cer-tain interest in them when landscapers com-ing from Europe started integrating these
plants into their designs.
For those who have little time to give to gardening, grasses are good choices as, once they are well estab-lished, they manage pretty well on their own and don’tneed much care. It’s also a plant that can adapt to dif-ferent kinds of soil. Canadian garden centres now oer
more than 200 varieties that will answer all your wants and needs.
Finally, you should know that grasses need very little fertilizer. Atthe time of planting, bone meal helps stimulate the root system, which aids in the rapid establishment of the plants. After that, wecan forget about fertilizer. Every fall, just be happy to spread a bitof compost at the feet of the plants.
Grasses; such magical plants
The Gold Bar,an exceptionally decorative grass
with brilliant yellow, striped
foliage.
The biggest challenge whencreating a rockery is to give it anatural look. If you don’t havethe nancial resources to givethis job to a professional, atleast take the time to ask forsome advice from a recognizedlandscape gardener. Too often,
unfortunately, many rockeries look more like apile of rocks or a heap of owering stones.
A successful rockery must above all give theimpression of being an integral part of the entire
garden. It is, therefore, important to choose the site well. And here-in lays the importance of consulting a professional, which is alwaysa good investment.
The rockery should always nish backed up to a xed point such asa building, a wall or a hedge. Wherever possible, choose stones thatare found in the surrounding environment. Avoid collecting severaldierent types of stones and combining them in your rockery whichwould be rather hard on the eye.
As for the plants, avoid gaudy colours and opt for quieter tones.Dwarf conifers also help to create a natural-looking rockery. Lastly,mat-forming perennials and annuals will cascade beautifully overthe stones. This again will give your project a natural look whichmust always be the primary objective.
Tricks for a beautiful rockery
A natural looking rockery always adds

A lot of people still imagine that it’s impossible to planfor a garden if the available space is too restrained. Yet,with a bit of imagination, it is always possible to createan agreeable and welcoming setting where we can finda wealth of vegetation.
However, it must be remembered that it isn’t alwayssimple to develop a small area. On the contrary! Forexample, a huge flowerbed too big for the area, a badlydesigned path or invasive plants can, in the short term, discourage the best of intentions.
Details shouldn’t be neglected as you have to feel com-pletely at ease in this type of garden, which may onlymeasure 50 square metres. Start by planting trees andshrubs which will become the basis of the garden. Besure to choose slow growing, compact plants. To givethe impression of size, it is better to progressivelyreduce the width of the lawn right to the end of yourlot.
Learn how to create volume. To make the most of thearea available, you can build pergolas or procure some
arches on which climbing plants can grow.
Finally, remember that in a small garden everything will be noticedmore quickly than in a larger expanse. It’s important, therefore, thateach plant, ornament or structure integrates well with the whole.

For this type of gardening to succeed and to ensure that the plantsstay healthy, you always have to think about watering, feeding, treat-ing and pruning. These are the keys to success. For example, it isimportant to deadhead faded owers regularly to achieve prolongedand abundant owering.
Do you realize that during heat waves, your plants may need to bewatered as often as twice a day? As well, if you have to go away fora few days, rely on a friend or neighbour to do the watering for you.Remember also, that plants in containers need to be fed on a regu-lar basis. Fertilize them with a plant food once a week. Or, at thebeginning of the summer, add a slow dissolving fertilizer that hasthe advantage of feeding the plants over several weeks.
Conserve thebeauty of yourower boxes
Contrasting foliages can give some good
results. Here’s a beautiful example.

OUR LISTS OF CLIENTS TO VISIT ARE COMPILED BY OBSERVING TO WHOM CANADIAN NEWSPAPERS SELL ADVERTISING FOR EACH OF THE VARIOUS THEMES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. TOOLBOX, May-June 2008, Page 59
A small corner; a delightful garden
In a small area,it’s better to thinkquality rather thanquantity.

Are you nancially literate? No? Well, don’t worry because you’re not the onlyone. Financial literacy is something you canlearn. It refers to the knowledge, ability, andself-condence necessary to make responsi-ble nancial decisions, such as buying ahome, which is often the most importantnancial transaction a person will evermake. Here are a few tips for future homeowners wanting to make a wise and enlight-ened choice of mortgage.
The rst step in this process is to obtain apreauthorized loan from your nancialinstitution, which will give you a good ideaof your borrowing capacity. The advice of amortgage broker can also be very helpful atthis point in time.
Before doing anything else it is advisableto nd out how much of a down payment
is required in your area, i.e. the actual dol-lar amount or the percentage of the totalvalue of the home that you will have toprovide in order to purchase the property.Apart from your monthly mortgage pay-ments, don’t forget to take into accountother expenses you will need to covermonthly or annually, including municipaltaxes and home insurance.
The next question to ask yoursels whattype of mortgage would suit you best: xedrate or variable? Even though a variable ratemay often be lower than a xed rate, youhave to be sure that you can cope with mar-ket uctuations. You’re probably better ochoosing a xed rate mortgage if you don’twant this additional stress. There are mort-gage loans available that combine these twodierent types of rates.
You also have the option of choosing anopen or closed mortgage. The rst optionallows you to reimburse your loan at anytime without penalties. Weekly or twice-monthly mortgage payments make it possi-ble for you to pay back your mortgage muchmore quickly while helping you save oninterest payments.

Edging a lawn is a springtime rite of passage for many homeowners. When winter has come and gone, many lawns are left in need of some serious maintenance, including edging. Well-de ned edges around the yard make the yard look more organized and better maintained. And edging is relatively easy, especially for those homeowners with a smaller yard. Edging can be time-consuming for those with more property, but when done properly, edging is de nitely worth the effort.
• Remove debris from the areas you plan to edge. Before you even begin to edge, be sure to remove any debris from those areas that need edging. Debris, including rocks, twigs or the kids’ toys, left lying around can be kicked up when you’re
edging, potentially causing injury to you or someone standing nearby.
• Purchase safety goggles. Even if you have removed all visible debris, there still may be some items hidden in the grass. These items can be kicked up and hit you in the eye, so purchase some safety goggles and be sure to wear them whenever you’re edging. As an added precaution, keep kids and others away from any areas you’re edging so they aren’t injured by any unseen debris that gets kicked up while you’re working.
• Check your tools. Edging can be done by using a gas-powered edger or a string trimmer. Before you begin to edge, inspect these tools to ensure they’re capable of handling the task at hand. Inspect the blades on a gas-powered edger to make sure they haven’t dulled since their most recent use. If they are dull, sharpen them before you start to edge. When using a string trimmer, make sure you have enough string on hand to complete the project. String trimmers use a particular kind of string, so visit your local lawn care or hardware store if you don’t feel like you have enough.
• Position your edger properly. Once you have given your tools the green light, it’s time to start edging. When you begin, make sure the edger is between the sidewalk or driveway and the edge of the lawn, placing the wheel of the edger on the sidewalk or driveway and then pushing and pulling the edger until you have created a clear edge. If you have never edged before, you may want to practice on smaller, more isolated areas until you become comfortable operating the edger.
