Help students learn by improving their use of learning strategies
Student Learning Outcomes• Students will demonstrate their ability to apply
effective learning strategies to improve their academic success in courses across the curriculum.
• Students will demonstrate their use of academic support services designed to enhance their learning.
• Students will demonstrate improved academic success in key gateway courses.

Program Outcomes for Faculty
Faculty will demonstrate increased self-awareness in the areas of learning strategies, learning styles, and teaching styles.
Faculty will demonstrate increased awareness of effective teaching/learning strategies for implementation in the classroom.
Four Initiatives
Initiative 1: Establish a professional development program for faculty that provides training in the areas of general learning strategies, discipline specific learning strategies, and multiple teaching/learning strategies related to the three core learning concepts: read to understand, listen actively, and organize for effectiveness.

Initiative Two
Integrate instruction in learning strategies across the curriculum.
Key Elements for Initiative Two• Increase students’ understanding of
preferred learning styles and behavior modifications for various teaching styles.
• Implement instruction in learning strategies for three core learning concepts across the curriculum: read to understand, listen actively, and organize for effectiveness.
• Implement instruction in learning strategies in gateway courses for three core learning concepts.
Initiative Two TimelineSummer and Fall 2009
Assessment Committee. Faculty sign up to participate.
Spring 2010
Faculty participate in training activities to learn how to use the selected strategies.
Fall 2010—Spring 2011
Learning strategies are integrated into a minimum of four sections for each gateway course (a total of 24 sections).
Learning strategies are integrated into a minimum of 7 additional courses from across the curriculum.
Increase implementation rate annually.

Develop a free, enhanced study skills workshop (Success for You) and a free study skills course.

Initiative Four
Tailor Learning Center and Library services to promote student and faculty awareness of various learning styles and successful learning strategies.
Key Elements
Increase use of learning centers, especially gateway course students.
Implement learning strategy workshops particularly targeted to those enrolled in developmental and gateway courses
Train personnel in practical teaching strategies to reach various learning styles and to prepare students in the three core learning concepts: read to understand, listen actively, and organize effectively.
Increase opportunities for group study.
Implement developmental group study pilot program.
Provide online tools via Library and Learning Center Web sites that promote awareness of students’ individual learning styles and engage students in their development of appropriate learning strategies.
Promote library collection of resources related to learning styles and learning strategies for use by faculty and students.
Develop pathways for collaboration between learning centers and library staff for sharing of best practices in teaching.
