We respectfully acknowledge the

Turrbal people, as the traditional owners

and caretakers of the land which is the

Toowong Catholic Parish.

We acknowledge the Elders, past and

present. May we, too, be good stewards of

this land.

A New Commandment ?

A Bishop was testing the suitability of a group of candidates for the Sacrament of Confirmation.

“By what sign will others know that you are Catholics?” he asked.

There was no reply. Evidently no one had expected the question.

The Bishop repeated the question. Then he said it once again, this time making the Sign of the Cross to give them a clue to the right answer.

Suddenly one of the candidates got it. “Love”, he said.

The Bishop was taken aback. He was just about to say, “Wrong”, then checked himself in the nick of time!

(from “The Prayer of the Frog” compiled by Anthony de Mello, 1988)

It is prior to his death and well before any Resurrection appearance that Jesus lays this new commandment of Love on his disciples. Actually, it is just after Judas has quit the scene and Jesus is aware that things are developing in a negative way and they will need all the love they can muster to endure what lies ahead.

Love is a powerful force: something not only appreciated by Christians. During the week, I came across this poem by Iqbal (1873-1938), a Muslim, who is regarded in Pakistan today as one of the great liberators of the human race.

Learn to Love

The luminous point whose name is the Self Is the life-spark beneath our dust. By Love it is made more lasting,

More living, more burning, more glowing. From love proceeds the radiance of its being

And the development of its unknown possibilities. Its nature gathers fire from Love,

Love instructs it to illumine the world. Love fears neither sword nor dagger,

Love is not born of water and air and earth. Love makes peace and war in the world,

The Fountain of Life is Love’s flashing sword. The hardest rocks are shivered by Love’s glance:

Love of God at last becomes wholly God. Learn thou to love and seek to be loved:

Seek an eye like Noah’s, a heart like Job’s!

The gift of the Risen Christ is Peace; the new Commandment is Love; the greatest possession of the Christian is the Spirit. Do you find that in yourself as an Easter people or do you still rely on the Sign of the Cross.

ARCHDIOCESAN INFORMATION

30th National Volunteer Week, 20—26 May 2019. Making a World of Difference. There are many people who are paid, and rightly so, for their work in the church and in the social services sector. But it’s our volunteers who are the heart of everything we do—who make the church, and community go round. As we prepare to celebrate National Volunteer Week, thanks to all the volunteers who are the heart and soul of what we do. Whether it be in parishes or prisons, hospitals, courts or respite and drop-in centres, without you we couldn’t do or be what Jesus Christ calls us to do and be. - Most Rev Mark Coleridge. Archbishop of Brisbane.

~Please take a postcard with this message from rotary stands (both churches).
