I f you read my Rod Building story in March, you may remember that my wife Renee has taken an interest in fly fishing with me this year. In anticipation, I took her to the Michigan Fly Fishing Expo at the Macomb Community College Sports and Expo Center. We both had a great time and she be‐came excited about learning to fly fish. As luck would have it, Renee was picked out of the crowd

and received her first ever lesson from nationally recognized fly fishing instructor and guide Joe Hum‐phreys, but that is a story for another day.

As we progressed though the exhibits, I was distracted by an unusual and inviting booth “Reeling & Healing Midwest”. As we explored past the inviting afghan and other items being raffled off, we discovered that this was a volunteer organization dedi‐cated to providing fly fishing experiences to women battling / surviving cancer . Their focus, from what I observed, is to pro‐vide ‘healing’ by way of relaxation and the enjoyment of a fly fishing retreat. Having previously experienced other retreats, focused on regurgitating your inner feelings, I was intrigued. I was glued to the inviting conversation of the volunteer staff, fishing guides, and supporters. In the end, I was moved by their work and found them to be a worthy cause. Before we finished our drive home, I had decided that I had to build and donate a rod to them (right); I decided to build them a custom fly rod. Last week, I connected with Catherine Sero, their president, told her about the rod and a new reel I purchased for them and she also convinced me to volunteer at one of their re‐treats this summer. I hope we can have them come and speak at one of our general membership meetings, and tell you what they are about.

Now celebrating their eleventh year in Michigan, Reeling & Healing Midwest, a 501(c)(3) non‐profit organization, champions fly fishing wellness retreats for women battling and surviving cancer. Their mission provides participants with a one‐of‐a‐kind fly fishing experience renewing their hope and spirit – and inspires them to continue their fly fishing education.

Any woman battling and/or surviving ANY cancer, whether newly diagnosed to +20 year survivor is encouraged to attend.

Two types of retreats are offered: 1) An Introductory Retreat includes basic fly fishing instruction, casting and 1 ½ days of on‐the‐water instruction with volunteer river guides; and 2) Reunion Retreats continue participants’ fly fishing education. Reunion retreats are more comprehensive and cover a variety of species, river systems, advanced fly fishing techniques and more on‐the‐water instruction with vol‐unteer river guides.

Cost to attend an Introductory Retreat is $25. Equipment, accommodations, food, beverage, fly fishing instruction and on‐the‐water guide assistance is provided at no additional cost to the participant. Reunion Retreat cost ranges from $25 to $100 depending on location and length of the retreat and includes equipment, accommodations, food, beverage, fly fishing instruction and on‐the‐water guide assistance at no additional cost to the participant. Scholarships are available.

The Prez Sez Our very own Ron Maschke and his wife, Goldie, will be moving to Doyle, Tennessee on May 7th. They have a daughter there and are looking forward to being closer to her. Ron has been a member of Metro West for many years and a member of the Detroit Steelheaders as well. He will be missed by all the sports show chairmen who could count on him to man our Club Booths for most of the hours the shows were open. No more will we see Ron’s smiling face sitting in the MWS booth at the Ultimate Fishing Show, or Outdoorama talking to people, passing out the Great Lakes Sport Fishing News, and now and again signing up a new member. Ron, did I tell you that you have to find your replacement before you are allowed to leave? The “Brat” boat has been sold along with Ron’s condo on Newburgh Road. I would often drive by Ron’s house and see the cars of other Club members parked in the driveway with two or three guys sitting in the garage and more than likely talking about fishing. Ron has extended an invitation to MWS members to stop and see him and Goldie if you are ever in the vicinity of Doyle, which is about sixty miles south of Nash‐ville. Ron, I’m sure you’ll find a fishing club in Tennessee to take the place of MWS (but no noodling for cat fish), and I hope they will give you half as much as you have

The Vice’s Corner Happy Fishing Season To All If you missed the April meeting, what a shame. Our guest speaker did a great job giving us some of the little tips that can make a big difference in our fishing successes. We have a change in the line ‐ up for our May meeting. Mr. Matthew Sawrie, who makes and markets Torpedo Divers, is coming down from the Toronto Area to demonstrate his new product. With him will be a Lake Erie Charter Captain, Bob Devine of Lake Erie Charters, to cover Walleye, Salmon and Muskie fishing in our area. Let’s all get together and learn something more about our favorite sport of fishing.

Our boat inspection seminar and what every person on board should know will be rescheduled for our June 1st meeting. I will also be making arrangements for boat inspections that evening in the parking lot. I will need you to contact me in advance if you wish to take advantage of this opportunity. It’s fishing tournament season, so check the schedule and make your plans to join in the fun and camaraderie. For those of you who would like to join a crew for the tournaments, don’t hesitate to make your interest known. At Metro West’s April board meeting, following a presentation by Jeff Bustos, the organizations listed below were awarded funds:

Lake Superior State University’s Aquatic Research Laboratory. LSSU’s Aquatic Research Laboratory’s mission is to combine education and research on aquatic plant and animal life and habitats within the Great Lake Basin to serve the academic, scientific and public communities. Donation of $1,000.

Thumb Chapter Steelheaders The Thumb Chapter is building and installing two additional net pens and three additional docks and will receive 15,000 steelhead fingerlings in April and a further 200,000 Chinook fingerlings in May. Donation of $1,000.

Huron Pines ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Conserving the Forests, Lakes and Streams of Northeast Michigan Huron Pines is a conservation organization that serves the 11 county region of northeast Michigan and works to achieve its mission through projects such as river restoration, watershed management, conservation leadership and land management.

Donation of $500. These organizations were evaluated and proposed by Jeff Bustos, Donation Committee Member.

Metro West is invited to the Holland Michigan Event!!

Holland Steelheaders is sponsoring a one day big lake tournament at Holland State Park this Spring (Saturday, May 22nd) and would like to get as many Steelheaders there for the event as possible. It’s strictly for Michigan Steel‐headers and we will be dedicating the new fish cleaning station at a cook‐out lunch after the event. Au Sable River Outing May 15th, Greenbush, MI

Dear Metro West Steelheader River Anglers ‐ and friends, Welcome back to the east side of the state for the 1st Upper Lake Huron side of the state outing which takes place May 15th (1st in a long time). We will stage at my house for the weigh in. I have 4 beds and some floor space with ample room for a tent or two out back. There is also affordable lodging in Oscoda. I have all the information to whatever avenue you decide to take. The fish we will target are any legal fish in season. Boundaries are from the Foote Dam to Lake Huron including any tributaries of the AuSable River. This is primar‐ily a river outing but I won't discriminate if you bring a boat to troll outside the pier heads and beyond. Dinner will be potluck at my place afterwards. I will have a small list of items if you don't want to bring a dish. I will have a sign up sheet at the May General Meeting. Start Time: 12:01 Saturday with weigh in at 5pm.

Lake Wabatongushi Outing June 26th – July 3rd 2010

Debreuilville, Ontario, Canada LAST CHANCE for the 2nd Wabatongushi Lake Outing. We will have exclusive use to my best friend’s family owned island for ONE WEEK on the lake in the Chapleau Crown Game Pre‐serve, Ontario (the largest game sanctuary in the world at 3,000 square miles). The island is centrally located on the 24 mile long lake. The waters are near pristine, with 70 uninhabited other islands, an average depth of 17 feet, with the deepest area near 190 feet. The cabin sleeps 10 comfortably, and has propane heat, cooking and refrigerator/freezers and lighting. You will have ample chances to view moose, black bear, loons, lynx, and bald eagles.

The lake has an abundance of different structures such as rocky reefs, sandbars and weed beds allowing easy fishing for Walleye, Northern Pike, Whitefish and jumbo Perch. Portage up one of the numerous streams or to the nearby lakes for Speckled Trout, Smallmouth Bass and possibly the fabled Blue Walleye. To stay at one of two fishing lodges on the lake would usu‐ally set you back about $1,400. We plan to travel caravan style, but we will provide extensive directions, too. OR you can fly in on Hawk Air from Wawa, ON or take the Algoma Central Railway or Canadian Pacific Railway.

Fishing Reports Clinton and Huron Rivers Outings

Metro West Meets the Public Submitted by Henry Nabors

Metro West Steelheaders completed two great weekends of meeting the public, talking about fishing in Michigan, the two watersheds, the surrounding communities that support the rivers and about our club. Thanks to Phil Bustos and Dan Keifer for their leadership in coordinating such outstanding opportunities to talk to anglers and

their families about the things we enjoy in Michigan.

Over 45 of our members and their families participated and talked to over 230 visitors over two Saturdays in early April. That is a lot of visibility for the club and our activities. Yes, we had lots of help from the host cities, the host watershed councils, and local fishermen and women. Thanks to all our members who set up the tent/tables, cooked and served the coffee, soup, hotdogs, Danish and cake! Hotdogs and our famous soups on a cold day can not be beat. Lots of work made easy and fun by a lot

of fun people! It was exciting to watch our experienced river anglers help those of us with less experience! Thanks for your time! Member MC Wade gave his fishing rod to the young man below ‐ wow what a smile; Mom was pleased as well!

Welcome to the four new members that joined during the outings. There were over 100 people that requested to be added to our Newsletter E‐mail distribution list. We welcome the opportunity to keep them in‐formed about the Club and what is going on around the Great Lakes!

The Ohio River Tournament Results April 17, 2010 Tournament Chairman, Phil Bustos

It was decided to make this a TEAM event with one to three anglers on a team. Each team could weigh 2 fish; this way MOST of the fish stayed in the river. For Angler of the Year results, one fish per angler was

weighed.

For the Team weigh in, 9 steelhead were caught; there were 150 hook‐ups reported!. Wow! Tom Nawrocki won BIG FISH 12.1 lbs and Team “Rock" took first place, with a total weight of 19.9 lbs. 2nd went to Team "MATT2" with 17.9 lbs; 3rd went to new member Joe Ferlito, Team "Joe" with 15.31 lbs; 4th, Team "fishw/jim", 15.25 lbs; 5th, Team "Burrito Boys" ‐ 7.2 lbs; 6th Team "Witte" with 8 hook‐ups and 7th place went to Team "MBM" with 5 hook‐ups.

Big fish results: 1st Tom Nawrocki ,12.1 lbs; 2nd Matt Benuska, 9.4; 3rd Joe Ferlito, 9.0 and 4th Rob Nawrocki, 7.9.

The weather took a turn ‐ a little snow with sleet and rain in the morning, cold north wind in the afternoon. At the weigh‐in we all warmed up with the famous Chicken Noodle soup recipe I took from the Clinton and Huron River Outings, along with grilled Italian Sausage with sautéed sweet green peppers and onions. We had a total of 14 river fishermen 13 members and one guest. We fished four different rivers ‐ Vermillion, Rocky, Grand and Chagrin. I would like to thank all the people who made it to the outing and for helping out in making it a great success for the club’s first Ohio Steelhead River Tournament.

Fishing Reports Comments from the Ohio Steelhead Tournament of April 17th:

Mark Davis: Fishing the Vermillion and the Rocky rivers was completely different than all my few trips to the Manistee. The most obvious difference was the multitude of hookups, at least 100 for 13 club mem‐bers. Second, I could see the steelhead take my fly. Jeff Bustos generously offered to show me how to ag‐gravate the fish into taking the lure even though it was sitting on the spawning beds and not actively feed‐ing. What a sight. I literally hit one fish on the nose with a rainbow egg fly about 6 times before it took it, just to get me to stop bothering it. Of course, I immediately broke the line because I'm just not experienced enough yet. I have to emphasize that it was a slow day for Ohio waters. On a good day, I'm quite sure I can start to get enough experience with hookups to learn how to land steelhead on light tackle. Can't wait to get out there again.

Bob Thomas: Although my stringer was empty, it was a great day on the river. It was nice to see plenty of fish in the river and at the "weigh in!" Hearing the stories of the fish landed and "naturally" released was exciting compared to our trips to Northern MI. Seems to me that Ohio has put forward a great effort to en‐hance their fishing program. Oh, I'd like to add that it was nice fishing in areas that were not cluttered with litter and you could actually walk around without having to untangle discarded line from your feet! A special thanks to Jeff and Phil for the excellent job they did preparing the food for the group. Great finish to a good day of fishing! Also, thanks to my travel partners "Big Mark" and "Big Little Mark?"

Joe Ferlito: I had a great time fishing the Chagrin. Although I fished alone for the day it was hard to beat the tranquility of having the river to myself for most of the day (especially during the snow/sleet storm midday). I ended up catching a good handful of fish, all went back to swim another day. Roger Hinchcliff: I fished several rivers in steelhead alley. It was an awesome trip. I landed many fish. To many hookups on a fly to count. But overall was an awesome time. Most fish were between 4 ‐ 8 lbs. big‐

gest fish in our group was around 9.5 pounds.

Comments Walleye fishing April 2nd 3rd: Tom Hesch: We got an early start walleye fishing this year with much suc‐cess. Friday 4/2/10 we got a 2 man limit in Ohio jigging Purple hair jigs w/minnows in 10 FOW by Turtle Island and then trolled 900 series Reef Runners out in front of Toledo Beach 18 FOW to pick up our remaining two fish to fill our Michigan limit. Saturday 4/3/10 we got a 3 man limit in Ohio with the same pro‐

gram as Friday then went to the dumping grounds out in front of Bolles Harbor and filled our Michigan limit using blade baits and jigs.

Dominic Liparoto: Not a bad day! But it was a bit of work. We were on the Detroit River near the lake mouth, Trenton channel area. Using jigs and minnows. 5 of the nine were caught by one (of 4) guys in about 25 minutes. He ran the trolling motor and had a

depth finder and hand held GPS. The fish ranged from 3 lbs, to nine lbs.

Huron River on April 17th: Lance Hinatsu : I could not make the Ohio fishing outing, so when an old friend from Detroit Steelhead‐ers wanted to fish the Huron River on Sunday, I went. We fished Kwikfish on my driftboat. Fishing was slow on the upper half from Telegraph to I‐75, but picked up on the lower half. The DNR must have re‐cently planted their steelhead fingerlings during the last week. We hooked and landed over six on K11X Kwikfish and upped the size to K13X. Figuring they would not hit the larger plug was not true, they still attacked the larger plug. We carefully released them back into the river. I saw something I have never seen on the Huron River, Cormorants. They were very abundant and diving for the fingerlings. They were covering the

river at all the runs. We finished the day with two steelhead hens 6 to 6.5 pounds. (Picture of friend with fish)

Benton Harbor Salmon Tournament April 24th M C Wade (A river fisherman on the big water.) I was unfaithful to my true love (my 12’ fly rod, Daisy, with fly reel, and a full spool). I was tempted so I climbed onto a BOAT and picked up a TROLLING ROD. The rod and reel in my hand was a good four pounds; felt stiff and bulky. The ‘Boat’ took us into Lake Michigan and the rods were set. We began the troll and Captain Clyde (the Cap) had the first fish, which he shook off because it was too little. I had the second up and landed a 13 pound King. Hey, the rod was very stiff but I did land a nice fish. First Mate Darrel (the First) was up next; we trolled for a long time and got back to the safety of the dock, only after a ride that shook me and rattled my bones. The Cap and the First were

telling about really bad trips. My doubts started to form when they told about changing out of wet clothes in a rest stop. Friday was a fast start, the First had a fish on before the second rod was set. The Cap called it a 17 pound King and we boxed it. Cap was up and took a 5 pound King. I got a 4 pound and the long ride started. It was at the dock where the 17 pound King was discovered to be a Brown Trout. Which led us to find the man with the scale for a real weigh in to be entered in the Club’s Big Fish thingy. It occurred to me that boat fishing is some unknown hours of boredom and a few minutes of chaos. The stories that were told I hope were NOT true. Some were, but the truth is just beyond me. How can anybody laugh at being so wet they had to stop at a rest area to dry off and change clothes? Saturday continued the long watch (Heinlein wrote a short story by that name. wish I could write as good). We came in with a fish, that is called skunk, I think. After the weigh in President Jim ordered me to get in the picture. I tried to hide behind a rather large man. Maybe you will not see me. It did occur to me the Jim was skunked too. Maybe he has no shame or pride. The Cap and the First avoided the picture. After the club lunch we went back out and Cap and the First picked up two more 7 pound Kings. Moving the boat from dock to the “unlaunching” place and then loading the boat on the trailer was very interesting. It was like the preparation to a wedding, everything in it’s place. I will return to Daisy and I will treat her with the respect she has earned over the last 18 years. Boating is not for me. The H2O wader.

River Angler of the Year Status Report

Four River Tournaments/Outings are under our belts already. That is hard to believe! The four events that count for RA of Y have been the Manistee Challenge, the Clinton River Outing, the Huron River Tournament and the Ohio River Tournament. There have been 69 anglers and guests that have participated in five river events ‐ including The Farm Outing (no points). The status after the Ohio Tournament:

The next river event is the Au Sable River Tournament on May 15th. Contact Mike Gable to participate. After that will be the St. Mary’s River Tournament on July 10th; this will be a river angler tournament and a boating tourna‐ment. Talk to Mark Lewallen to get involved in this event. Mark, Phil and Jeff tell us this is going to be special. If you like river fishing, get involved. Are there other events that should be considered before year end? Talk to Phil Bustos. Fishing Report Benton Harbor Salmon Tournament April 24th Port Captain Hermann Christoph Report Submitted by Henry Nabors Captain Christoph said “The weather was not the best but we had a great turn out. We had 13 boats in the tournament and 45 anglers and friends in attendance. Drum Beat Captain Marty Drum and his crew took first place with four fish that weighed in at 33.3

pounds. Captain Chris Thompson and crew came in second with three fish and 37.7 pounds. Chris took Big Fish with a 14.8 lb King. I appreciate all the help I had organizing and running the tournament. See the results below.”

Henry said “Metro West at its best! This is the first year in the last three where we got to fish on tournament day. We had bad weather but we got to fish and we had a great time. The neat thing about this club is how we share information and teach new members and others about salmon fishing and about new ports. There were three new members that entered their first tournament and a few gained knowledge about how to fish for salmon for the first time. I joined Jerry and Mike on ‘Jerry Rigged’ to show them a few new techniques and Steve Flavin joined Bob and Paul on ‘Hey Jude’ to give them pointers on how to rig their boat for fu‐ture salmon and trout events. This was the first visit to Benton Harbor for Captain

Captain and Crewperson of the Year Rule Changes

At the end of 2009 there was dialog about the C of Y rules and an article was published in the October 2009 news‐letter (page 10 &11) stating the history of the award, current rules and a few concerns. Based upon a meeting be‐fore a general meeting and email communications, three questions were asked to clarify how the process would work for 2010. I provided ballots via email and at meetings to members that participate in boating events over the last two years. All three questions were accepted. Tournament results will be recorded based upon the new rules.

If there are new concerns about the process during 2010, let me know and we will address them for the 2011 sea‐son. Let’s go fishing!!! Let’s have some fun!! Matt, My wife Caryn is a good sport and on our recent vacation to Pawleys Island, SC she not only put up with me wanting to fish every day, she joined me. As some of you already know I'm not that comfortable on the big wa‐ter. That's one reason I prefer fishing streams and rivers, but not the main reason. What I really like is fishing light tackle. I find it so much more fun to fight the fish on light line with the line screaming out and the rod tip bent low. We went out from Georgetown Landing which is about an hour South of Myrtle Beach. We cruised out and wove our way through a maze of tight canals through a salt marsh that is over 60 square miles of nature preserve. We could tell right away we were in a very active fishery. We boated past dozens of birds of prey and we saw a

couple of pods of porpoises happily chasing fish at least five miles in from the ocean through the brackish water. We fished for just 4 hours and brought in at least a dozen nice size fish. Mostly we caught Red Drum and Black Drum. We threw back several that were just under the 15 inch limit and 3 more that were over the 23 inch maxi‐mum. They were delicious too, white meat, sweet and flaky. The locals told us we should come back when the fish‐ing wasn't so lousy. I'm holding a 25" Red Drum, about 4 lbs and Caryn has a Black Drum about 2 lbs. She caught a bigger Black Drum, over 5 lbs but the picture of it has the guide holding the fish so I sent this picture instead. Mark Davis

Metro‐West Chapter, MSSFA Board Meeting Minutes for April 13, 2010

Attendees:, Jim Robertson, Tom Taylor, Matt Lubaway, Bob Olari, Marty Drum, Todd Stav, Mark Davis, Mark Platt, John Wright, Henry Nabors, and Carmen Zirles. Absent excused: Lenard Pietila, and Clyde Schoen. Guests: Ron Maschke, Jeff Bustos, Jeff Kruscewski, Matt Benuska, Mitch Curbey, Dennis Kelley, Rob Nawrocki, and Bill King. President, Jim Robertson, called meeting to order at 7:03pm Jim welcomed the guest to the meeting. Jim introduced a banquet money handling procedure to be adopted by the board. The board reviewed the procedure and modified it. A motion was made by Matt Lubaway to adopt the policy as amended. Bob Olari seconded the motion. Motion passed. Jim presented a change in the organization chart. The results of the banquet will be in the news letter. He also gave the board some information on the Humane Society of the United States. It is trying suppressing the sporting activities of Michigan sportsman. Vice President Report: Clyde Schoen Clyde was absent . May: We will have a presentation on what is required for a boat inspection by the U.S. Coast Guard auxiliary. We will sched‐ule a time for boat inspections so we can get the inspection sticker for our boats. Marty Drum will again load 15lb, 20lb and 25lb line on level wind reels only. We try to get the company that makes torpedo divers to present there product at the meeting, Secretary’s Report: The Minutes, for the February board meeting were read. Tom Taylor moved to accept them. Carmon Zirles seconded. Motion was passed. Treasurer’s Report: Carmen Zirles presented the treasures report. Mark Davis made a motion to approve the report and Henry Nabors seconded it. Motion passed. Membership: Henry Nabors: Henry gave his report. We are retaining a lot of members and signing up new members every month. We now have 176 members. See the report in the news letter. Directors Reports: State Director’s Report: Lenard Pietila: Lenard was absent but submitted his report in righting and his full report will be printed in the news letter. Marty Drum: The banquet was a complete success. He has line loading machine lined up from Gander Mountain for the May meeting. Mark Davis: MUCC TRACS magazine program is still being worked on. Mark will check with John Wright to see about the cost and develop a program for this year. Kid’s camp: A suggestion was made to send kids from deployed Military families to camp also. It cost $380.00 to send a child to camp for 1 week. The budget committee will look at revising the number so we can send more kids to camp. Mark Platt made a motion to increase the numbers from 15 to 20 kids to camp. Bob Olari seconded the motion. Motion passed. A deci‐sion on the number of kids that we will send will be made at the next board meeting.

Jeff Bustos was asked to present a recommendation on what projects we can donate monies to for conservation projects. He reported that the net pens we donated to last year worked out well and the fish are being delivered to the pens this month. Matt Lubaway made a motion to donate $1000.00 to the Thumb chapter of MSSFA for Lake Huron net pens, $1000.00 to the Lake Superior salmon park, and 500.00 to Huron Pines project. Henry Nabors seconded the motion. Motion passed. Matt Lubaway: Matt needs all articles and reports as soon a possible. The information is due on the 19th of this month. Todd Stav and Tom Taylor have develop a policy to make sure the wavers are available at tournaments and all participants have signed them. The boat captions have the responsibility to have all there crewmen signed up on the waver. The form for the tournament will have the waver printed on the back of the form and it was suggested that we have them signed all the time. The renewal of the directors and officers insurance is in process. Matt is also working on getting a discount insurance policy for our boat owners. Todd Stav: Todd suggested that we hold off on the tee shirts for this year and make them available for the start of the next year. The flages we are to fly with Metro West name and logo on them are not available yet. The requirement for all metro west OLD BUSINESS: We had a general discussion on small boat tournaments in conjunction with the regular tournaments. We will look for come one to champion this if needed.

Jack Lawson: Jack Lawson joined during the Sportsman’s Banquet. He and his friend Linda are avid anglers. Jack said “We will … participate in some events later in the season with my own boat.” Does Linda like to fish? Jack replied “Yes, fly fishing, river and lake fishing. We are going on vacation in June to Pine River to kayak down pine river and fish the entire stretch for our trout dinner. I like to fly fish ‐ Huron River & Flat Brook, NJ. Linda and I are big hunters (mostly whitetail and turkey) but enjoy fish‐ing as well. Linda and my expectations for joining the club is to network, socialize and get to know other people’s techniques as well as fully understand the fishing opportunities that sur‐round us in Michigan. I would be willing to be a crew member with Linda for Salmon to learn other

Joe Ferlito: Joe visited the March General Meeting and sat with Mark Platt for the evening. He called Mark a week later and asked how to participate in the River Outing in Ohio and join the Club. An hour later Joe was a new member with Mark as his sponsor! Joe said “I am interested in meeting new people and learning different techniques for catching all species of fish. Most inter‐ested in larger sport fish species (ie, Salmon Steelhead, Musky, Walleye and Trout). I'm interested in being a crew member for Walleye or Salmon. ... I've done a little bit of trolling, but definitely have a lot to learn.” Fishing experience: “Salmon/Trout – some big lake experience but would like to learn more. I’ve been fishing Salmon/Steelhead in the rivers for 6 years; began my freshman

year at GVSU fishing the Grand River in Grand Rapids and have since fished most of the larger steelhead rivers in Michigan. I am now branching out into a few rivers in Ohio as well.” Walleye: “I have been jig fishing with my dad for about 12 years; just started hand‐lining with a friend last year.” Do you fly fish? “Yes. Paint Creek, Pere Marquette for Trout. Occasionally I'll give it a whirl for Steelhead as well.” Joe added “I love to fish. My family thinks I'm obsessed. I've learned everything my family knows about fishing and now am teaching them what I learned. I'm pretty much on my own to learn new tech‐niques.” Joe lives in Sterling Heights. Welcome Joe! David Clauw: David joined during the Clinton River Outing at Yates Dam. David lives in Mt. Clemens near Paint Creek. He is an avid river fisherman and loves to fish out of his kayak. David said, “I go out after work, get in my kayak on the river near my place and fish my way down to a friend’s place where we have dinner. I like fishing from my kayak on the AuSable for Trout and on inland lakes for Bass ‐ and a few Walleye from time to time. I also like to get in a little fishing time around Roger City. I got into fly fishing last year and am looking forward to learning more from the anglers in the Club. I work in construction and do landscaping so am a bit busy right now; looking forward to fishing the AuSable outing May 15th if I can make it.” David,

The Club is Growing by Leaps and Bounds!!!

I continue to be amazed at the way Metro West has grown over the last sixteen months. We have moved from a membership of 116 at the end of 2008 to 179 today. We have had 35 new members join in the first four months of 2010 vs 32 this time last year. That is an outstanding out‐reach to the community and our fellow anglers! Keep up the great job of talking about fishing in Michigan, supporting our state’s outdoor opportunities and our involvement.
