What happens when you cross two scramble bike stars, Steve McQueen and an Italianroof thatcher? Metisse Motorcycles is the answer! That name may not ring many bellswith you, but behind the name is the fascinating story of how two brothers triumphedover the big boys of motorcycle manufacture - and how Gerry Lisi brought their amazingheritage to Faringdon.

The story begins in the 1950s in Hampshire. Brothers Don and Derek Rickman, stars of theBritish motocross scene, were famous for modifying their BSA bikes with off-the-shelfparts and when their competitors started asking for copies of their bikes, the brothersopened a retail business. They soon began designing frames and offered the designs forfree to the top bike companies Triumph, BSA, Norton and Matchless; all they wanted inreturn was the chance to purchase bikes built to their own specification. However, themanufacturers turned down the offer so the brothers became manufacturers themselves, building frames that were paired with suitableproprietary engines. Their first frame was named Metisse, the polite French word for “mongrel”, and the name stuck. Over the yearsMetisse manufactured thousands of frames for a range of bikes, from dirt and motocross bikes up to huge police motorcycles withTriumph eight-valve engines. They were one of the biggest manufacturers of street bikes in the UK, and they also diversified into productsas varied as BMX bikes, hospital beds and Ford-powered kit cars. Ironically, Metisse were producing motorbikes long after many of thelarger companies had gone out of business. When the brothers retired they sold the business to Pat French and his company MRD, whocontinued production of the bikes.

The story moves closer to home in 1999, when French teamed up with Gerry Lisi, a Metisse enthusiast. Italian-born Lisi was by trade a roofthatcher but after tiring of working outdoors in the British climate he had already started one business in the area, Carswell Golf Club. Inhis spare time Lisi was a keen dirtbike racer and he put forward a proposal to see Metisse safely through some difficult economic times,

which was accepted. A new factory was built at Carswell, and when French retired, Lisicontinued and grew the business. While famous for building frames and other parts, theone thing Metisse had never manufactured was a motor - so Lisi set out to pen his own one… and today he is building bikes with Metisse-designed and developed engines.

Perhaps the most famous of Metisse’s “modern” motorbikes is actually a vintage one!Actor Steve McQueen was famous for his love of motorcycles and his favourite bike was acustomised Metisse desert racing bike. Today Metisse Motorcycles manufactures limitededition exact replicas of McQueen’s modified Metisse bike - there will only be 300 availableand they are endorsed by the actor’s estate. So now you know the story of MetisseMotorcycles … and how such a unique piece of history is being built in a factory just acouple of miles outside Faringdon!

OFFICES TO RENT IN FARINGDON MARKET PLACE

So Spring slipped off the edge of the world and summer arrived before the buds onthe trees had turned to leaf. Perhaps a false dawn? Will it be snowing in May? Will theApple Blossom wither and perish in the next harsh frost?

Of course not – for in this near perfect country of ours the Upbeat Daringfonians willkeep away the wintry weather using the power of creative thought and positiveaction. Don’t doubt this: if you do, you will be the cause of any reversal in ourweatherly fortunes.

The long nights grow longer and the season of festivals approaches. A small group amongst the Daringfonians, the FocalAngels,  decided they must Focus On the well-being of the Town and have decided to push forward with the annual partyin July – just 70 sleeps away from now! The excitement is already building. You can feel it in the air: which is fortunate as

the Party will be an open air event – pretty much run on thin air as well! Theplans for the event are almost laid but, as ever, more willing helpers are neededso do feel free to volunteer.

Permissions to hold the Party have been granted, permissions to barricade theroads approved, without charge. The stage has been planned, the soundproduction sourced and the light show arranged. A few extra barrels of ale areon order and some fermented grapes will see us good to go!

Not much has been heard from the High Sheriff now for some 60 nights andnothing has been heard from the Nomads who don’t seem to oppose the ideaof a Faringdon Party – but equally don’t seem to do anything to support it. Agreat shame and a wasted opportunity we think. But who are we to say?

Our standards are very high and we would feel proud to supply you with your next vehicle purchase.

All our vehicles are carefully sourced before starting the Blackworth Car Sales process. We first valet all vehicles, paying attention to areas not usuallyvisible. The cars are then machine polished to remove fine scratches caused by washing or road film and daily wear. It’s not till this process has beencompleted that we know if the vehicle is up to the high standards that we require. We proudly place our name on the vehicle and we understand the hoursof enjoyment you will get from your new car. We think you will find the way we do business is noticeably different to other car retailers.

At Blackworth Car Sales we like to exceed your expectations. Our stock changes regularly because we work on the basis that turnover is better than profit, and keeping our stock fresh offers our customers more variety. All our vehicles are covered by a comprehensive warranty, serviced to manufacturers’requirements, and given a new cam belt.

If an MOT is required we like our vehicles to have no advisories. We offer part exchange and we guarantee that you will be offered a very competitive pricefor your vehicle. www.hatswhiskers.com

The story behind Hats WhiskersSome years ago I spent dayssearching for a hat to go with anoutfit I was wearing for a familywedding. I could not findanybody to help me find a hat. Itneeded to complement theoutfit, lift my skin color, andframe my face, but there wasnothing out there. Eventually Isettled on a head piece which left me feeling uncomfortable andI knew I had been rushed into making a dreadful mistake: thisfeeling haunted me and ruined the day.

I then started to look at other people’s hats and wonderedwhether they had suffered a similar dilemma to me – thus “HatsWhiskers” evolved. Since then I have learned to block hats, trimthem and even create bespoke headpieces for individual people.

For me it is important that when a client wears an item from HatsWhiskers they are able to relax and enjoy the experienceknowing that every care has gone into matching the hat to theperson and the outfit.

My stock is sourced from a variety of places. As Luton is thehome of English millinery I find a wide range of trims and hatsfrom there. I also stock hats from couture designers in Londonso I have something for everyone.

In my stylish and private showroom you are able to peruse thecollection and be advised on how best to complement your outfit

Whatever the occasion I can help you, call me (Sarah) on 01367870248 to arrange your appointment and prepare to be wowed.

High Flyers

Has anyone noticed the increasing number of Red Kiteshovering in the skies above Faringdon?

Until fairly recently, these birds were in decline and onthe verge of extinction.

The red kite was an extremely common bird in medievalBritain. In towns and cities, rubbish and animalcarcasses littered the streets. Red kites were usefulbecause they ate the refuse and helped clean the streets.People considered them so valuable that anyone whokilled one was punished by death!

During Tudor times, household waste was no longercast aside, reducing their food supply. In thecountryside, kites and a whole range of other birds wereclassed as vermin and a threat to food production. In acomplete turnaround, people were paid a penny foreach one killed.

By the end of the 19th century, only a handful of pairs ofred kites survived in the remote hills of mid-Wales.Organised protection began soon after, firstly by theKite Committee, followed by the RSPB.

In the late 1980’s an introduction programme began inEngland and Scotland. Red kites from Spain and Sweden(That’s why I can’t understand a word they say!) werereleased in the Chilterns, Oxon. The project provedsuccessful when the first kites in over 100 years bred inEngland and Scotland. The British Trust for Ornithologynamed the red kite as “Bird of the Century” because ofits determined fight back from the brink of extinction.(similar to Katie Price!)

“A word of caution”Red kites mainly scavenge on dead animals …

and what goes in must come out!

When cleaning my car last Sunday, a large male red kitedropped what could be best described as a smallCaribbean Island on the bonnet.Bless em!
