I have told the supervisor at the drilling site to call me if any of his workers see an airplane anywhere south of the north side of the shelter. Fly on the north side of the helicopter pad. Do not go past the tape that is across the runway, AT ALL! Thank you for your help in this matter. Also, we have brought in seven (7) loads of dirt to fill the low spot on the runway just south of the southern taxiway. There is about six inches of new topsoil in that area. I seeded the runway last week with Bermuda seed and hope to have the runway in good shape when the drilling rig is moved away. The sprinkler system is set to water the field four times a day for short periods. If you are out there and notice the center portion is not wet, President’s Notes feel free to grab one of the hoses by the runway and wet that area down so the grass will grow as fast as it can. John Stanzak located a container for us and it will be at the field in the next couple of weeks. You will notice a raised pad has been prepared for the container out by the dumpster. We will have it for storage and I think it will be very nice. Once the container arrives, we will have to build a ramp to get into the doors. This will be part of our work day this month. Saturday the 14 th of May will be a workday. We will be working on tables, general cleanup, fencing, and hopefully getting the new container fixed up and filled. There are several events coming up. Check the events schedule and come play! The Bi-plane event will be moved due to the drilling. We will discuss the new date at the meeting. Use this down time to make certain your planes are ready to go. We have already had some issues with batteries. Make sure to cycle your batteries to make sure they don’t let you down. I hope to see you at the field! Keep the shiny side up! Tim Lovett President

April Secretary’s Report

The April 2011 business meeting was called to order by club president Tim Lovett at the McDonalds Restaurant at 450 W. Grapevine Hwy Hurst, TX. March 2011 business meeting minutes were approved as written by the attend-ing GSWAM club members. Field Report: There was a discussion regarding the leveling of the flying facili-ties runway with approximately 4-loads of top soil using an outside contractor to perform the work. Motion made: To fund the runway project with a not to exceed amount of $3000.00. Motion was sec-onded and approved by attending club members via a show of hands vote. Club vice president Lee Rice is to begin receiv-ing bids and meeting with landscaping contractors who want to bid on the pro-ject. 2011 Flight Instruction: Frank Rowell has posted the 2011 flight instructor list on the club web site. Flight instruction will be provided, weather permitting, on Mondays and Wednesdays starting around 6:00 P.M. at the GSWAM flying facility. Old Business:

Storage Container: The club has been offered a free storage container that will fill our needs for a secure place to store field equipment, but it will require trans-portation from its current Location in the Grand Prairie area to the flying facility location. Transporting the 40’ long con-tainer will require a commercial grade transportation contractor to move the container to flying facility. A general dis-cussion regarding the location where the container will be placed was completed. Motion made: To Fund the moving of the container to the club flying facility from its current location in Grand Prairie, TX with a not to exceed amount of $1,500.00. Motion to pay a contractor to move the storage container to the flying facility was approved by the attending club members. Lone Star Nationals: March 25th – 27th the Lone Star National Combat Meet will be held at the GSWAM flying facility. A motion was made and approved by at-tending club members to host the annual combat event. The flying facility will be closed to open flying until after 5:00 P.M.

Saturday and Sunday during the event. New Business: 2011 Texas Biplane Fun Fly: On Sat-urday May 21st the GSWAM club will host its annual biplane fun-fly. There is a $10.00 landing fee with lunch included. Event Director is Darrell Abby. Motion made: To provide the event director with $150.00 for raffle prizes. Motion sec-onded and approved by the attending club members. UTA UAV Presentation: Aerospace Engineering students Daniel Glowickz and Jonathan Efinger provided a video pres-entation of their Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) school project and described their objectives for an unmanned, radio con-trollable aircraft to be launched and tran-sition or continue to autonomous flight, navigate a specified course and use on-board payload sensors to locate and as-sess a series of man-made objects before returning to the launch point for landing. A team comprised of four UTA Aerospace Engineering students and one faculty advisor took top honors at the 3rd Annual Student Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Competition in Maryland back in 2005. This year’s team wants to return to Mary-land and compete in the 2011 event and is seeking outside funding for team travel expenses and lodging. Motion made: To award the team $200.00 with a contin-gency to possibly provide additional fund-ing based on the teams over all progress. The funding motion was seconded and approved by the attending club member-ship. April Fun-Fly: There was a very good turn-out for the April fun-fly event with 18 pilots participating in the events. The fun-fly was great fun, flying, light hearted competition, and the ever popular free pizza. Asphalt Plant: If an aircraft is lost within the Asphalt plant property please check-in at the security office near the plant office before recovering any air-craft. Trash Can Usage: Reminder: Please put your crashed aircraft remains into the dumpster, and not into the trash cans. March 2011 Model of the Month: This month’s Model of the Month award was again won by Jim Whitworth with his WWII FW190 German fighter. The air-craft was powered by a .91 Magnum four

2011 TEXAS SCALE CHAMPIONSHIPS-SCALE MASTERS QUALIFER By Lawrence Harville

The reining Texas Scale Champion for 2010 is our very own Vice President Lee Rice. Lee won the title last year and will be back again this year to defend his title. Of course there will be a dedicated number of us who will be there to make sure he doesn’t. AND THAT GENTLEMEN IS CALLED A DOGFIGHT. Come be a part or watch the combat. The Scale competition season is fast approaching and GSWAM will be hosting the event again this year on June 18-19 at our on field. Like last year we will be giving away another Airtronics 2.4, 8 channel Radio. Last year the radio was won by our own Ed Couch. This year the radio will go to the winner of the FUN SCALE CLASS-and good for everyone else-you cant win the radio two years in a row. Eat your heart out Ed and the rest of you have an even better shot at getting the radio. Before you say I don’t fly scale, I don’t have a scale airplane, I don’t know what to do. Lets go through the classes and see if something fits you. Scale is not for everyone only about 99.99% are eligible to play. In the FUN Class -little or no documentation required-just fly. I have seen many of you at the field with just this type of SCALE plane-now you can come and compete and stand a very good chance of winning. I have seen you guys fly, I have seen your airplanes. I can tell you would do very well at this event. Your static portion of the event is worth 5 points-all you have to do is have a photo, drawing or sketch of the plane—an ad or the box top art is good enough. You don’t have to do static if you don’t want to-just fly. You can have an ARF, buy a plane or build it yourself, anything will do. We hope to fly 6 times over two days, your score will be the Best Two Flights added to Static. If you fly 2 times you could decide not to fly again if you wanted to. So you say what TRICKY SCALE flying do I have to do. This where we separate the men from the boys, You must perform 5 extremely Difficult maneuvers . They are:

Take Off Fly by--straight line down the runway between 10 and 20 ft high Figure 8—draw an 8 in the air Landing Realism in flight—did it look like a real plane flying around

Then you pick 5 other munevurs that you like to do like a loop, roll anything the real plane would do. THAT IS IT!!! You do that everytime you fly. You will get a free lunch, be eligible for the drawings and hopefully earn a place in GSWAM scale history. If you ever thought about entering a scale contest and never have FUN scale would be the place to start. This year we are dividing FUN Scale into civilian and Military Class to give more pilots a better chance of bringing home the awards. We can have someone to help guide you through the contest. We can even have someone on a buddy box, if you would feel better like that.

Model Of The Month April The toughest competitions put on by Greater Southwest happens EVERY month at the club meeting. This is just a sample of what you are missing at our meetings. The rules are pretty simple:

Bring and airplane or helicopter to the meeting The club members vote on which they like the most Winner get a gallon of glow fuel Doesn’t have to be new, finished or flown just a model you want to show off.

But the best thing about the show and tell is the builder or owner get to explain his entry, how he built or assembled it, what techniques or difficulties he has. Some of the best most informative minutes of the meeting. Usually questions are ask but mostly we just get to see something new. Not only do you get a gallon of fuel if you win but you also get the appreciation of the guys you fly with. Sometimes there is only ONE plane at the meeting—guess who wins the fuel then. Bring out your toys---see you at the meeting

First place in April is Jim Whitworth with his Fw 190A

Second Place was Dave El with his control line plane
