ART & ARCHITECTURE TOURSThe first Southern Living Showcase Home located in the central Houston

area opens to the public at noon on Friday, May 4 and continues the weekends

of May 5-6, 12-13 and 19-20 from 10 a.m. to noon each day. Located at 5307

Aspen in Bellaire, the 4,777-square-foot home marries regional charm with

design ingenuity in its four bedrooms, 4.5 bathrooms, chef’s kitchen, library and

craft room, study, mudroom, gardening stand, and outdoor living rooms. The

home, designed by JKM Designs, was built by Stone Acorn Builders and fea-

tures interior design by Edwina Alexis Interiors. Visitors are invited to register for

gift baskets and prizes to be given away, while special guests and demonstra-

tions scheduled each weekend of the showcase. More than 5,000 attendees are

expected to tour the showcase home with the $10 admission benefiting the

Houston Center for Literacy and Friends of the Bellaire Library. Information:

The 38th Annual Galveston Historic Homes Tour returns for two weekends

this spring: May 5-6 and12-13. The tour showcases 10 historic homes, offering a

fascinating journey through the island’s extraordinary architectural history and

storied past. Tickets are $15 for Galveston Historical Foundation members and

$20 for non-members before May 4 and are available online and at area Kroger

The Houston chapter of the American Institute of Architects organizes walking

tours throughout the year. On May 12, AIA Houston debuts its Towers andTrees Downtown Walking Tour. Explore the magnificent architecture between

Hermann Square and Discovery Green as well as the changing dynamics of our

downtown. The tour highlights the partially realized civic center plan surrounding

Hermann Square, the historic backbone of Main Street, the ambitious 1970 pro-

posal that would become Houston Center, the internationally recognized icons

from the skyscraper boom of the 70s and 80s, and Discovery Green, the newest

catalyst for downtown development in Houston. The Towers and Trees Tour

meets at City Hall, at the base of the reflecting pool in Hermann Square, 900

Bagby Street. Hobby Center Parking Garage is recommended due to 2 hour

Rienzi, the European Decorative Arts branch of The Museum of Fine Arts,

Houston hosts Twilight Tours from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. every Thursday in May.

Relax and enjoy the beauty and serenity of the Rienzi estate, art collection and

gardens at twilight, while Houston musicians provide a soothing serenade for

guests on the terrace and in the living room. Wine and light bites are served.

Docents are stationed throughout the house to greet visitors and share stories

about Rienzi’s collection of European decorative arts. The musical line-up fea-

tures harpist Meghan Elizabeth Caulkett on May 3, Fine Arts Strings playing vio-

lin and viola on May 10 and May 31, Spanish guitarist Lucas Gorham on May

17 and jazz duo Mood Indigo on May 24. Admission is $15 per person and $12
