Hope is essential to the human spirit. This is the driving force behind the new Hopewell Church on US 1 in St.

Augustine where Pastor Gary L. Williams Sr. offers a contemporary place of worship, ministering to those seeking God’s guidance in the face of all our modern challenges. The church seeks to provide an opportunity for spiritual growth, fellowship and service. Or, as its motto goes, “Hopewell, where your needs are met with God's promises”. Hopewell Church began out of a need for more space by the First Baptist Church of Mandarin (FBCM), where a thriving family and community service oriented church has grown up over the years. While FBCM traces its history to the 1870s, it was under the direction of Pastor Williams, beginning in 1990, that it has grown to its current membership of close to 4,000. In 1994, the church moved to a more spacious prop-erty, building a new sanctuary, an academy and administrative offices on a beautiful secluded setting among the trees on Loretto Road in Mandarin. In recent years, the church has experience steady growth, with members coming from all over northeast Florida, including as far away as Palm Coast. After much prayer and discussion among church ministers, elders and members the idea for Hopewell Church was born. Hopewell will be an integral part of the surrounding commu-nity, and will develop its ministries in much the same way that First Baptist Church of Mandarin has evolved. At FBCM, service is a key element of their philosophy, with members participating in missionary work in Malawi Africa as well as local service work with Clara White Mission, and Take Stock in Children. Hopewell will strive to meet the needs of the community, with a focus on education and service. At the epicenter of FBCM’s rapid growth and popularity is its gifted Pastor. Pastor Williams says he has learned a lot in the past twenty-three years while leading his con-gregation. As a result, his vision for Hopewell is clear. The service will be laid-back and contem-porary to reflect the congregation. He is going to use the English Standard bible as opposed to the more formal King James bible he has used for decades. He wants Hopewell Church to be a place where people feel like they belong and feel familial connections. He be-lieves success in life is knowing and doing God’s will and admits this is not always easy. But being raised in the church family gives kids core values they will take with them in life. “It is exciting to imagine the future of Hopewell. We will allow it to evolve based on God’s will and on the needs of the community,” said Pastor Williams. A deeply spiritual person, Pastor Williams sees the providence of God in every moment of life, large and small. For instance, when the FBCM was in need of extra parking, he prayed for a solution and not long

after the local school Principal called to see if it would be possible for the school to use the parking lot at the church during school events. They trad-ed space and helped each other out. He says mo-ments like this happen all the time. Pastor Wil-liams’ father was a minister. Although he passed away when Williams was only 24 years old, he says he has memories and les-sons for a lifetime. He attributes much of who he is today to the lessons his father taught him in every situation in life. “I may not have had him as long as other people have their parents but in those twenty-four years he prepared me for a lifetime with what he poured into me. I am beyond blessed.” Not long after his father passed, Pastor Williams was called upon himself to do God’s work. He says he never wanted to be a Pastor but when

he became part of his wife’s church and met the Pas-tor there, he was encouraged to consider it. “Thank God for what he saw in me that I did not see in my-self,” he said. Pastor Williams was born and raised in Jacksonville and graduated from Ed White High School. He is a graduate of Bethune-Cookman Uni-versity in Daytona, Florida, and Luther Rice Semi-nary in Lathonia, Georgia. He is the father of four grown children, two girls and two boys. One of his sons, Gary, may follow in his father and grandfa-ther’s footsteps as a Pastor and will carry on the fam-ily tradition. In an open letter to the new congregation, Pastor Williams writes, “The challenges of life can sometimes leave us hopeless and lonely, but you

don’t have to be alone. There is a place that offers hope. Hopewell, your Church in the community”. With Pastor Williams at the helm, Hopewell Church’s future and that of the surrounding community it serves is bright, or as its motto goes, filled with “God’s promises”.

I have always been intrigued by successful people. What makes them tick? How do they achieve their goals? Is there a common denominator in character or knowledge? Did a

certain person inspire them? Is it their faith? Or, is it a little of all these things? This month St. Johns Magazine has taken a look around our community and found people who are living out their dreams and making an impact on our lives in big and small ways. These are the Movers and the Shakers of our community. They are highly creative and passionate about what they do, whether its interior design, ballet, modern dance, quiet char-ity work or blossoming entrepreneurs with a smart idea.

Multi-generational Creative entreprenuers

Interior Designer Wendy Chandler describes herself as con-stantly having new ideas. Whether it is design related or busi-

ness or just about anything, her creative mind is always busy. Wendy says she has never been the type of person to hold back and be fearful in life. Daughter Lindsey agrees, “As a Mom, she has always said to do whatever you are passionate about. Do what makes you happy. I appreciate that about her,” she said. Today, Wendy is an award winning Interior Designer and owner of The Model Home Store & Chandler Designs. She grew up in southern California and always loved spending time with her step-mother viewing model homes. At the time, she thought decorating model homes would be the best job in the world but life had other plans first. At college in Idaho, she met and married her husband, which led her to Jacksonville, Florida. Even though she studied art in college, she became a Dental Hygienist and was focused on raising her three daughters in Fruit Cove. During this period, Wendy did artistic projects, crafts and art with the kids and within the community. She later decided to go into business with a little store and became involved in designing model homes for builders, and the rest is history. Design is a highly creative process for Wendy and she says it comes as second nature. When working with clients she listens to their ideas and finds out what will really make them happy, and then helps make it a reality. The Model Home Store evolved as a way to showcase the signa-

ture items Wendy used in decorating models. When Wendy’s daughter Lindsey was having a baby, they be-gan designing a nursery together, along with younger sister Carley. They wanted truly one-of-a-kind bedding and design but discovered most stores were online only, and the Jacksonville area really did not have a boutique-style store that carried unique items for buyers to feel and see the fabrics in person. Since Wendy already owned the Model Home Store with plenty of space, it made sense to develop the idea further and open Babble Baby Décor right inside it. With a love and passion for making homes beauti-ful, it was only natural to launch a baby line to help clients create the most beautiful room in the home, a baby nursery. Babble Baby Décor carries the latest in baby bedding, room de-cor, furniture, and unique toys and gifts. Another great aspect of Babble is design services and the ability to custom-make items, like the tufted head-board they designed for granddaughter Joni’s nursery, which is now a big seller at Babble. Wendy says that if a client brings in a photo of a nursery from a magazine, she will find the exact items, or she will design a similar room with a lower price tag, depending on what the client wants to achieve. On the wall at Babble is a colorful tree made of cut out paper. Lindsey said she and her sister just dreamed it up one day after seeing something similar. It is that natural creativity, perhaps handed down from Mom, which is behind the current and future success of this mult-genera-tional team.

Luis Abella’s dy-namic combination

of charisma and skill is taking the St. Augustine Ballet to new heights. Born in Cuba and a graduate of National School of Ballet in Havana, Cuba, Luis Abella spent many years tour-ing the world with diverse dance companies including the Bellas Artes Nacional of Mexico, the Minnesota Ballet and the Univer-sity of Miami Ballet. Today he is the Artistic Director of the St. Augustine Ballet and Abella’s School of Dance in St. Augustine. In the three short years since he opened his dance school he has created a reputation for excellence. This year one of his students was ac-cepted to the prestigious HARID Conservatory in Boca Raton, FL. But this is just the beginning for Luis. He is excited to see the development of students who began training with him at very young age. In dance, demanding work is required, with some of his serious ballerinas training as much as five hours a day. He uses the American Ballet Curriculum but adds his own stamp. He says being a good ballet teacher is complex. It is not enough to have been a ballerina. One must know injury prevention and anatomy as well as technique. Having grown up in Cuba, Mr. Abella takes nothing for granted. He loves living in America, being part of the ballet world here. His passion for dance and his work shines through when he speaks of the unparalleled diversity of the American dance scene. He believes this is what makes it great and is thrilled to be a part of it.

Dan Blewit of Monkey Bars Garage Storage entreprenuer with heart

Dan Blewit is the owner of Monkey Bars Garage Storage. On the surface, he is an ordinary person. He is a graduate

of USF with a degree in Economics and is the owner of a successful busi-ness here in St. Johns. He is a nine year resident of Fruit Cove with a won-derful family. He has been married to his wife Carla for twenty years. He has two teenage sons, ages 14 and 16, who attend Creekside High School, and are on the varsity swim team. He has an 86 pound Golden Retriever named Luke and a rabbit named Chewy. He describes himself as honest and dependable and his clients agree since all his jobs are guaranteed for

life. We call Dan Blewit an entrepreneur with heart because of his special work with local charities. About six years ago his son, Michael, was in the PACE program at Cunningham Creek Elementary. The school was hosting a “Dream Party”, and he and his wife Carla de-

cided to make the cake. They didn’t want a boring cake, so they made their first 3D cake (Hello Kitty). It was such a big hit that the Dreams Come True organizers asked if they could make a “Christmas Dream”. They did and have made cakes for them since. “I don’t ask for any recognition and very few people know of our contribution, but it makes me feel awesome. We drop off the cakes before the party and get photos of the event afterwards. I never meet the Families, but am glad to bring a little joy to children with terminal illnesses,” Dan said. In addition, Monkey Bars supports local groups and sports teams and contributes to Betty Griffin House, often, many times from garages of local residents.

It is clear to everyone who lives here that the CR 210 Cor-ridor is experiencing rapid growth and change. Thankfully,

a group of neighbors has come together to preserve and enhance our com-munity culturally, aesthetically, and socially. Striving for a better qual-ity of life through community involvement, the 210 Community Alliance keeps abreast of what is happening locally and has a strong representative voice. They are comprised of local entrepreneurs, and other community members who volunteer their time and efforts to create events and moni-tor new building projects that will have an impact on the area. As their

mission states: “Many benefits await us if we consider 210 a community not an I-95 exit”. The Alliance welcomes newcomers to their events and hold in-formative meetings on the second Thursday of the month at 9am at First Florida Credit Union on CR 210. Board members encourage everyone to share their ideas. 210 on Tap, a new networking event, is the Alliance’s latest en-deavor. It is held monthly at local businesses along CR 210, giving people a chance to network, share ideas and stay informed. You may have already met Sal and Angi

Palmieri, a local power couple on the rise. Together they have cre-ated three successful companies and the sky is the limit. Sal Palmieri is a personal trainer, physical therapist, athlete and coach who has worked with Ned Jarret of NASCAR and Stacey Hatcher with the Pro Volleyball Tour and members of the NFL. His wife Angi Palmieri is a dynamic program man-ager and special events professional. They merged these unique skills and began building their dreams. Sal started Wellness Concepts Health and Fitness in 1997, pro-viding fitness programs for planned communities. Business was strong and after realizing the opportunities for expansion, Angi left her career in non-profit management to launch Elite Amenities, which manages aquat-ics staffing, recreational and athletic programs for children and adults, summer camps, and other special events for many local communities in Northwestern St. Johns and Duval. Their newest venture is Ultimate Racing Inc, launched in 2011. Sal’s years of experience in the fitness industry as an athlete, athletic trainer and coach led him to direct and sponsor local triathlons, cycling teams and running clubs. The first race was the annual Run to the Sun in New Smyrna Beach in memory of Angi’s father. Since then, Ultimate Racing has created eight signature races annually and found a niche in executing community-based runs such as the Gingerbread Man 5k at Heritage Landing each December. They are also held the 210 West 5K Challenge at St. Johns Golf and Country Club on April 27th. Both Angi and Sal are motivated to give back to the community and service plays an important role for their businesses. Sal is a founder and serves on the Board of the Christina Phipps Foundation, which offers assistance to breast cancer survivors through specialized yoga programs. Angi directs the Jefferson H Ridgdill Run the Sun Memorial 5K, which supports numerous charities including St. Jude Children’s Hospital, the Boggy Creek Gang Camp, LIVESTRONG Foundation, MDA, Wounded Warrior Project and Shriners Hospital for Children. ***Moveres & Shak-ers of St. Johns Continued on pages 21 & 22

Start With a Hearing TestBy Dr. Rosanne Faul So, you think you don’t hear well, or MAYBE you

think your husband, wife, mother, father or some-one you care for does not hear well. Where do you start? Start with a hearing test. Tests, awful word, nobody likes tests. Everyone can remember sitting in a classroom, worrying about ‘passing’. Relax, breathe deeply. There is no studying or grading for a hearing test. What is a hearing test, or better yet, a comprehensive hear-ing evaluation? A hearing evaluation will discover the type, severity and degree of hearing ability. To determine this both speech and pure tones are used. The speech evalu-ation includes 2 components: determining the softest level of speech you can hear and recognize, Speech Reception Threshold (SRT). Then speech is raised to a comfort-able loudness and your ability to understand or discriminate speech is determined. A lot of research was done to determine which words to include in these lists of words. Speech recognition/discrimination/understanding assesses and determines if speech is truly clear. The next component is determining how well or at what loudness can you detect tones of different pitch or frequency. Lots of people have objected to this part of the evaluation. ‘I came here to learn how well I hear people not funny tones.’ Pure testing is very important and tells us about the inner ear. Scientifically, sounds can be described by their frequency /pitch and loudness/level. Let’s be clear, pitch and loudness are 2 different things. Pitch is a musical quality, bass vs. soprano. Loudness is a whisper vs. yelling. The inner ear nerves and hair cells each hear individual pitches. The inner ear is laid-out just like a piano keyboard; each nerve hears a tone of different pitch. Pure tone testing determines what’s going on in the inner ear. Finally pure tone testing should be delivered via both headphones and bone vibrators. A headphone is placed over the ear or into the ear canal and tests all 3 parts of the ear: outer ear, middle ear and inner ear. A bone vibrator is placed on the head and only tests the inner ear, bypassing the outer and middle ear. The headphone testing and bone vibrator testing equals each other; it is a nerve, sensori-neural hear-ing loss. There is no surgery or medication to correct a sensori-neural hearing loss, but a hearing aid may help. If they do not, and the bone testing is better, a referral to a physician, specifically an ENT physician is needed to determine if medication and/or surgery will correct the hearing problem. Only a complete hearing evaluation has both headphone and bone conduction testing. I have had many patients tell me ‘I have had hearing tests before but never bone conduction testing’. They did not have a complete test. Learn about your hearing. Get a hearing evaluation from a qualified tester, a doctor of audiology. A doctor of audiology has a college education and thoroughly trained to determine the type, severity and degree of hearing ability and whether or not, a hear-ing aid will help.

As a history teacher, I’ve always encouraged my students to travel and visit the faraway places we study. Learn-

ing is raised to a whole different level if you have the opportunity to immerse yourself in another culture. Even though obstacles to foreign travel certainly exist, I believe there is no better education. I count myself fortunate to have lived overseas and as I’ve come to learn, there is a great opportunity for locals who are inter-ested in experiencing another culture but can’t get away. I recent-ly met with Susan James, local Community Coordinator for Step to USA, a student travel and exchange program that brings high school students from Spain to the First Coast for a home-stay each July. Susan, who will be hosting her 21st exchange student this sum-mer, has been coordinating for Step to USA for quite some time and is in need of host families for students arriving June 30th. Host families will give a month-long commitment and be required to provide a bed, meals and limited transportation, while the student immerses themselves in American culture, experiencing

what it’s like to be an American teen. Exchange students visit mu-seums and themeparks throughout Florida but are also expected to do chores and be treated as a member of the family, not a guest. All students speak English, have medical insurance and come with their own spending money. As Susan told me, these are all ‘top-notch, respectful kids’ whose families have invested a considerable amount of money for their child to experience a culture they’ve only studied in school. A few weeks ago a wonderful client of ours brought in their

daughter’s dog, Ojay. Ojay was ten years old. The client had tak-en over care of the dog. Ojay had been an outdoor dog for all ten years of his life. The kids had not taken him to a vet since he was a puppy. They wanted a dog but not to be a part of the family, just out in the yard, chained to a tree in the shade. Ojay was now paying the price of the young people’s ne-glect. He had heartworms. He did not have a few. He had enough of them for long enough that he was dying from them. Ojay was coughing and having trouble breathing. In spite of medication to treat him for heartworm induced heart failure, Ojay got worse and worse over the next 2 weeks. His belly got bigger and bigger as his lung arteries became more and more obstructed to blood flow, backing up fluid into his abdomen. Finally, he passed away. Why am I telling the story of Ojay? Ojay is the first dog I have seen in my career die of heartworms. Indiana, where I prac-ticed for 21 years, has heartworms, but not like Florida. Florida has way more mosquitoes all year round than Indiana. Those mosquitoes have many more opportunities to bite your pets and spread heartworms. Ojay’s passing is sad enough but the fact that I have to tell other clients every day that their pet is not getting enough heartworm medication is what is really sad. In spite of the fact that there are heartworm-spreading mosquitoes all year here people still want to give heartworm medication “only in the warm months.” It gets cold here for a few days. It takes a pro-longed freeze to kill a mosquito. It has been proven that Indi-ana has mosquitoes in January – Indiana! They fly into a protect notch in a tree when it is cold and find protection! This is Florida. No chance enough are killed in winter here. Let me say in no uncertain terms: “Every dog and cat needs to be on heartworm and flea and tick medication year round in Florida.” If you know young people who have a pet, check with them to be sure that they are getting these products as well. How would you feel if your kids’ dog died of heartworms and you could have prevented it? I am sure, pretty bad. “But my dog is a little Yorkie only goes out to wee-wee and comes back in.” I have heard this before. Let me be perfectly clear. I have treated a three and a half pound Yorkie for heart-worms. And cats get heartworms too. The female heartworm is 13 inches long. That is one or more thirteen inch worms in a Yorkshire Terrier’s heart and lungs. Dogs can have over 80! A Yorkie could die within months. Test dogs once a year. Medicate every month all year.
