Public television is breathing new life into the traditional civics lesson. Peter Sagal is traveling across the country on a Harley Davidson to fi nd out where the U.S. Constitution lives, how it works and how it doesn’t, how it unites us as a nation, and how it has nearly torn us apart. Sagal—the humerous host of public radio’s Wait, Wait … Don’t Tell Me!—

investigates some of today’s major constitutional debates and talks with ordinary citizens and leading constitutional experts about what the Constitution actually says and what it means, the dramatic historical

events and crises that have defi ned it, and why all this matters.

A new professional development opportunity is available for teachers

Look for two new Great Performances at the Met in May!

Tune in Sunday, May 5, at 1:30 p.m. (CT) to be intrigued by Verdi’s classic drama of political conspiracy and thwarted romance, Un Ballo in Maschera. The opera is staged by acclaimed opera director David Alden, and leading Met stars Marcelo Álvarez, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, and Sondra Radvanovsky take on the central roles in the opera’s love triangle.

Then, look for Rigoletto on Sunday, May 19 at 1:30 p.m. (CT). The new staging sets the opera’s tragic events in the glitzy setting of the Las Vegas strip circa 1960. Michele Mariotti conducts his first company performances of this Verdi masterwork, which features one of the most famous arias in all of opera, “La donna è mobile.”

Cook Your Cupboard solves your pantry puzzlers

Morning Edition guesses you’ve got a few food items in your kitchen that you have no idea what to do with. That strange can of beans you panic-bought before a storm,

or some fancy salts you received as a gift. Perhaps an expensive ingredient you bought for a recipe that’s never seen light since.

What’s languishing in your kitchen pantry? Submit a photo of what’s stumping you—or leave comments to help someone else out at npr.org/cupboard. Morning Edition will bring chefs like Nigella Lawson on air to weigh in on submissions for occasional segments through June. Look for it online and tune in to Morning Edition weekdays 4:00-9:00 a.m. (CT).

Wait Wait ... Don’t Tell Me! like you’ve never seen it before!

A live staging of Wait Wait ... Don’t Tell Me! will be beamed to Bismarck’s Grand Theatre and Fargo’s Century 10 on Thursday, May 2 at 7:00 p.m. (CT). An additional showing will be offered on May 7.

You won’t want to miss host Peter Sagal, official judge and scorekeeper Carl Kasell, and panelists Paula Poundstone, Mo Rocca, and Tom Bodett. We’ll be at the May 2 show, so be sure to stop, say hello, and get signed up for amazing door prizes before you settle down for popcorn and the show.

For the new generation of public radio fans

NPR’s Backseat Book Club is for our youngest audience—the kids who are surreptitiously listening as their parents pick them up from school or cook their dinners. Each month during All Things Considered, Michele Norris chooses a special book and asks kids to read it and submit questions or comments. When kids tune in to All Things Considered, weekdays 4:00-6:00 p.m. (CT), they’ll hear Michelle interview the author, and their questions will frame the conversation.

The project’s reading list is also an excellent resource for parents looking for quality books to share with their children and for teachers who are creating their classroom reading lists. Look for NPR’s Backseat Book Club online at npr.org/backseatbookclub.
