Corporate Member Profile: Bartlett Vision Optometrist comes home to practice

By Cecilia Green

Born and raised in Bartlett, Dr. Kristina Gabrenya went away to school. Her

career goals led her to an undergraduate degree in psychology and neuro-

anatomy from Iowa State, a Doctor of Optometry from the University of

Missouri, a position at St Louis Children’s Hospital, a residency in ocular

disease at Jesse Brown Veterans Medical Center in Chicago and working

there for four years to care for veterans and teach residents training to be

optometrists and her own practice in St. Louis for seven years.

But she never forgot her hometown, and the life she enjoyed there with her friends and parents, TL and Tom Ar-

ends. Finally she made a big decision –to return to Bartlett to open her own practice.

“Our greatest challenge was that we opened Bartlett Vision in Town Center ‘cold’ in 2005,” Dr. Gabrenya said,

“meaning we opened our doors without a single patient, rather than purchasing an existing practice. But this great

challenge has also been our greatest joy – to be blessed by a growing practice and meeting new families and watch-

ing the kids grow up.”

She said one of her favorite parts of her job is “checking in” with families each year to hear not only about their vi-

sion but also what is going on in their lives. Understanding a little about their lives and making that personal connec-

tion actually helps her better serve their needs in eye care, eyewear and contact lens.

Dr. Gabrenya now has a team of three doctors and seven “amazing” optician/technicians, including two students

studying to be optometrists. “One person alone cannot provide the extraordinary care that we are committed to,”

she said. “It takes an entire team.”

She keeps on top of the latest advances in research, technology and products by continuing education and is a mem-

ber of several professional associations. She also earned her fellowship from the American Academy of Optometry,

an honor earned by only a small percentage of optometrists, involving significant training and testing.

Ever since her experience at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, she has made eye care for children a priority. “Our staff

strives to create a great experience for our young friends,” she said, “especially those getting contact lens for the

first time.”

She also has a large number of seniors who they follow for diabetes, macular degeneration and glaucoma, with so-

phisticated instrumentation

Dr. Gabrynua believes that the best way to keep your eyes healthy is to keep your whole body healthy with a good

diet and moderate exercise from childhood through senior years.

Bartlett Vision (cont.) Most of all, she said, “I love being part of the community of Bartlett. My mother raised my brother and I to have a

volunteer spirit and to always be mindful of the needs of others.”

Weaving volunteer work into her professional and family life with husband Bill, deputy chief of the Palatine Fire De-

partment, and five- year-old Grace and four- month- old Lucas, is a priority. She is an active member of the Bartlett

Lion’s Club, where she is the director of the Lion’s Labor Day Dash, The Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, Park Dis-

trict soccer coach, and supports Arts in Bartlett, Bartlett Veteran’s Memorial and Trish Simon Foundation, among

others.

“While I have been involved in many organizations in Bartlett,” she said, “it truly has been me that benefited. I’ve

met the most incredible people. A volunteer spirit is the best gift I could have ever received from my family.”

Letter from the President Welcome to May

I want to begin by expressing our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Tom Lezon, who passed away on April 17. Tom was a longtime advocate of Arts in Bartlett, and faithfully provided the sound for our Arts Festival for most of the Festival’s history. Tom was an accom-plished guitarist and singer, and was a member of the Encore Singers. In December at our An-nual Holiday Party, we recognized Tom for his years of service with Arts in Bartlett. He will be

greatly missed. We will have a tribute to Tom at the Art Festival on June 28th.

Several exciting things are going on with Arts in Bartlett! We are busy with fundraising ideas, and our first to be developed is a series of Dine-Around for the Arts. Each month we’ll encourage members, friends and families to support a local restaurant that is sponsoring us by giving a percentage of the sales to Arts in Bartlett. TL’s Four Seasons was the first restaurant, on April 28th. On May 29th will be our fundraiser for Moretti’s. We have a coupon in

this newsletter.

The other big event we are focused on is the Annual Festival of the Arts, June 28-29 at Bartlett Park and North and Oak. Plans are moving ahead with ads, sponsorships, artists, entertainer bookings and more. If you’re able to assist with our biggest event of the year, contact Sue Stocks, who is the Art Festival Director. You can email her at [email protected], or come and see her in person at our volunteer meeting Tuesday, May 27 at the Log Cabin. We will need volunteers for

the Festival, and Kathryn Benton is the contact at [email protected] or 224-208-5707.

It’s still our membership that sustains Arts in Bartlett, a volunteer-run arts council, so please continue to support us with your membership and invite more individuals, organizations and businesses to join. There is an optional line in the appli-cation to donate towards our growth fund, and anything you contribute is greatly appreciated. We are continuing to move in the direction of a larger space for our Center for the Arts, which will open many exciting opportunities for Arts in

Bartlett. Many of you have contributed, but we encourage all of you to make this additional donation to help us grow!

If you are able to volunteer at our Center for the Arts, especially on Saturdays, please let us know. Please contact us

through phone, email or website, as found in this newsletter.

We really need our membership’s input and brainstorming on fundraising, sponsorships, membership drives, program-ming and more. Please come to our next board meeting and Arts Festival volunteer meeting on May 27, at 6:30pm in the Log Cabin. We hope that you feel an investment to bring the arts to Bartlett, volunteer to join a committee, attend our events, and spread the news about Arts in Bartlett, a vibrant arts council!

Thanks! Rita Lopienski

Monotype printing to be demonstrated at

Artist Networking May 20

Greta Pfiefer will be demonstrating the Monotype Printing method at the Arts in Bartlett Artist Networking Gathering, 6:30 pm at the Center for the Arts, 118 W. Bartlett Ave.. Monotype printing is a method of using a non-porous base to create a unique print by using paints, inks and altering the surface before applying it to paper. She will supply the 8" X 10" paper to print on and you are asked to bring a few simple supplies: inexpensive watercolors, brushes, water container, paper towels, an old credit card, and a plexiglass or glass plate. Prints can also be made from shards of glass or cut out acetate shapes. A box lid or old cookie tray large enough to take your wet prints home on is also recommended. As always, you are welcome to bring a few art pieces or recent work to share at the beginning of the meeting. Please limit to one or two pieces for the first 15 minutes of the meeting, so we can get to the exciting project quickly. RSVP to Linda Kinnaman by email at [email protected]

There is room for 28 on the trolley so members can register now to get a seat. Because this is geared toward families, we ask that you have at least one child or teen in your party. To register, send an email to [email protected] with your name, how many in your party, and ages of children.

One of Arts in Bartlett’s most

faithful members and volunteers, Tom Lezon of Hanover Park passed away April 18, 2014. He was sound man at the Arts Festival for many years, with his wife

Candace and stepson Chance. In fact when Tom decided to propose to Candace, he did it on stage at the Arts

Festival so she couldn’t say no. He was a skilled guitar player and performed with the

Encore Singers every year at the Festival. We will miss his wonderful talent as part of Arts in Bartlett.
