Club Business. The meeting commenced at 7pm with President Malcolm Baldwin welcoming members
and visitors. The following points were then addressed.
Foundation members Maria Amrein, Gwenda Wright and Gary Maloney were presented with official
invitations to attend the club's 20th
Anniversary dinner on 12th
July.
The club is in the process of purchasing Adobe Lightroom 5 and Adobe Elements 12 to be installed
on the club's laptop for purposes of teaching and practical workshops.
Basic Portrait Workshops will be run later in the year by Barry Cheeseman.
Members were asked to suggest ideas for workshops and outings.

Malcolm then introduced Lorraine Jones as the judge of tonight's images. Lorraine, originally from New
Zealand but currently living on the Gold Coast gave us a rundown on her life as a photographer, having
taken up photography seriously 11 years ago. She attended as many workshops and demonstrations as
possible in order to learn the art of photography, and more recently spent 2 weeks just photographing one
family of Fairy Wrens. The images from this marathon went towards Lorraine's Honours in APSNZ.
Lorraine presented a slideshow of some of her bird photography before critiquing our images.
Supper was provided by Jennefer Richardson.
Barry Cheeseman then gave a short demonstration on the basic tools available in Adobe Lightroom.
A slideshow of the recent Wyaralong Dam sunset workshop along with some Karumba sunsets by distant
member Steve O'Connor was shown before the meeting closed around 9pm
PRESIDENT’S REPORT for May 2014
The sunset outing at Wyralong Dam was well attended. It was good to see some new members out there
with their cameras experimenting with settings they haven’t used before with the assistance from our
experienced members. There were some great shots taken, it was a shame the sunset did not get to meet our
expectations. All had a good time.
A couple of the Committee attended the Photographic Society of Queensland’s Presidents’ Forum where
topics and ideas were discussed, such as; member grading, keeping new members, judges, self and remote
judging and different ways in helping members enjoy photography. We came back with some ideas, which
should benefit the Club.
One of the ideas, that a lot of Clubs have, is a Practical Workshop and Demonstration night separate from
the normal critique meeting nights. Our meeting room is available at night throughout the week and
weekends and it is proposed to run these practical workshops. Any ideas would be appreciated.
The Committee has purchased Lightroom and Adobe Elements to be installed on the Club laptop for use in
workshops, by judges and speakers.
Our fund-raiser, first for a few years, was a huge success and raised $620.00. The winner of the raffle was
Renee Lohmann. A fantastic result and congratulations to all members.
Malcolm.
May - Club Critique
Subject: Architecture.
Lorraine Jones was the Judge for our Critique subject of Architecture. The main thing that Lorraine pointed
out to everyone was the they needed to really zoom into the actual subject. Eg. no trees or shrubbery
overtaking the point of the subject. Many of us seem to have had trees in our actual photo, taking away from
the main point which was Architecture. When you look at the 3 winning subjects, none of them had any

other distractions in the photo, just pure building type photos. I must admit that when I look at the winning
photo done by Ian Hinrichsen, with the building with the lovely purple lighting around it, it has no clutter of
trees or other drawing features in it and is pure lines and geometrical shapes of the building.

Lightroom by Barry Cheeseman
Barry did a demonstration of Lightroom, which was very encouraging to all to learn some of the different
things that Lightroom can assist if you do not have Photoshop. It is a program in which it is non destructive
in the processing of the photo. You can alter the photo many times without affecting the original. The
program is seemingly once you start to understand all the commands, relatively easy to learn and use.
Bill and I have just purchased this program, so will fill in you in on our learning curve as well later on.
Barry will continue to explain the different functions of Lightroom during the meetings when he is able.
Many thanks to Barry for running these mini workshops, they will be greatly appreciated, and I for one will
be looking forward to them.
PSQ Convention
The Convention took place this year at Boonah. A Great spot for lots of photography and not too far from
Beaudesert and surrounding areas to visit. Our club I thought had a good turnout of 8 members. Ian and
Rosemary Hinrichsen came for the day on Saturday, but Tony Spies, John Staib, Brent Randall, Cliff and
Jan Pottinger and Bill and myself attended all the days as well as the Dinner on Sunday evening.
This was the first PSQ Convention we had been to, so did not really know what to expect. We stayed along
with Cliff and Jan at the Boonah Showgrounds Caravan Park. Quite nice and very reasonable for the few
days we all stayed. The others I know travelled back and forth from Beaudesert each day as the trip was not
that long.
The Conference itself was very well run between the Qld Camera Group and the Boonah U3A Photography
Club. The guest speakers were well known identities like Richard White, William Long, Innes Larkin,
Michael Snedic, Ben Stoffl, Mark Rayner, John Lomas just to mention a few. We had the Town Cryer all
dressed in his traditional costume assist at opening the Convention along with the Mayor John Brent.
Boonah itself gave us great days in which we could go out and photograph the area, nice sunset skies if you
were in the right location at the time for sunset, and most importantly no rain during the weekend.
Most of the morning was devoted to guest speakers and a lot of note taking done to remember just what so
and so suggested that we all try. Many of the speakers had wonderful backgrounds that had lead them into
being the photographer that they were today. I particularly enjoyed listening to William Long's background,
coming from the art of Ballet, and he also mentioned that the film "Billy Elliot" made him cringe as it was
like his own experiences of growing up in the East End of London.
Many of the guest speakers had important words to pass on. Like "Look Up", "Look for lines and
composition", "See what is in front of you", "Think in Black and White for the picture - remove the colour,
so that you see the picture", "photos need to be punchy and powerful".
Innes was a great ambassador for the Boonah region, telling of all the wonderful areas in which
photographers could delight in the nature of the Scenic Rim. Many parts I had not even heard about and Bill
and I will definitely be going to go out on day trips to some of these areas mentioned.
Over all I think everyone who attended gained a lot from the convention. I know that we did just from
listening to the speakers talk, as well as some of the practical demonstrations.
