Aloha, Members!

Talk about fast paced! Imagine one of those treadmills, the year started off at a com-fortable yet quick pace - the heart rate was still up, but manageable speed and level ground. INTERNATIONAL NEWS A current International Headquarters staff member, TINNA ROS STEINSDOTTI-was recently elected to the Council of Europe’s Advisory Council on Youth for a 2-year term beginning January 2016. U.S. AREA NEWS

BOBBY STIVERS-APIKI will be attending the U.S. Area Council meeting and Area Convention in Grand Rapids, Michigan in July, representing the Hawaii Region. As our Regional Director, he will be part of the esteemed group of Area Service Directors, officers, RDs and participants from all over the country and even international attendees.

METRO DISTRICT NEWS

The Metro District’s annual Endowment Dinner to recognize the clubs’ choices for entry into the Golden Book is scheduled for Friday, May 22nd at the Japanese Cultural Center. The installation of new members and officers will be conducted during the evening as well. Endowment RSD, RAYMOND SETO, is in charge of this service area as well as the event. This year’s shortfall in the collection goal was more than subsidized with generous donors.

HAWAII REGION NEWS What a Convention!!! The very hard work of the Convention Committee, headed by West Oahu’s DUKE CHUNG, outdid itself with the activities (two exclusive slot tournaments just for our attendees); a Ragger’s ceremony; amazing raffle prizes galore; lively update by MATTHEW STUCKEL, on youth activity around the U.S. Area and his participation in youth Convocations; an impressive young members panel from Kaimuki (LEI HILEA, WES PEI, JAY NISHIMURA, and CASSIDY INAMASU) speaking about recruit-ment and membership; the nomination and election of EDDIE MIWA from the Kalihi Y Service Club as Re-gional Director-Elect; the “four ninjas” - RAYMOND SETO, SHARON ISHIDA, RICK LAU and PHIL SAM-MER (both with the Central Y Service Club), zipping high over the downtown Fremont Street on the Slotzilla “Zoom Line”, raising $215 for the Endowment fund; and shopping! (see pages 3 and 4 for photos and more).

“The thing I took away from the convention was that

there are many people who are passionate about help-ing community members through the Y's Men clubs.

Since I don't work at Kaimuki anymore, being a part of our club gives me a sense of belonging to the friends and relationships I have made and still impacting the

community.”

Dear Lima Hana Readers, A few bite-sized updates for your reading pleasure: ASC We did it! The Kaimuki-Waialae YMCA reached and surpassed the 2015 ASC goal of $85,000. Thank you to all who played a part in working this mini-miracle. Since kicking it all off in February, we raised $88,280.27 made up of 732 donations. It was an especially inspiring, creative, and sweaty journey. The campaign team pulled out all the stops. We saw everything from cookbooks to skate-a-thons, from Easter event to tahitian dance lessons. Many individuals put themselves out there past their comfort zone, took risks, and grew in the process. It was especially gratifying to see our staff embrace the role of team captain and become top solicitors, many for the first time. Looking Ahead This summer promises to be busy and full of opportunity for our families. In addition to our day camp programs we’ll also be hosting a group of 18 elementary school students from Osaka YMCA for two weeks. The particular program format is new and we hope it will be the start of something sustaina-ble for many years to come. We will be seeing some changes in our aquatics program in the near future. Our aquatics director is relocating to the mainland so we will have new leadership by the time the next issue comes around. Also one of our capital projects this year is to refinish the well-worn pool deck. I expect that project to commence in the fall. Quick Tip: Stand up for yourself! Okay, time for a brief departure from the usual content. In the last few years more and more content is coming out about the dangers of being sedentary. Recently the catch phrase “Sitting is the new smoking” has been gaining momentum in the media. One study found that replacing 3-4 hours of sitting a day with standing burned the equivalent of 10 marathons per year! I made the switch over to a standing desk about three years ago more (more so to make space in my cozy office than for health rea-sons) and I have to say I am now a true believer. Whether or not sitting is the new smoking, I encourage you to give it a try. Your body will thank you.

Until next time MAHALO, Tony

“Be at peace among yourselves. Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the faintheart-ed, uphold the weak, be patient with all. See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all. Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
