Coordinators Update
Waking up with Vicinity Centres Aussie Hoops!
On Thursday 19th May the Vicinity Centres Aussie Hoops
program received a well-deserved feature on Channel
Nine’s Today. Filmed in Melbourne, the live crosses
featured appearances from the Australian Rollers, Jayco
Australian Opals Tess Madgen and Rebecca Allen,
Andrew Gaze and Lauren Jackson.
This was a great exposure opportunity for our program
with over 1.8 million viewers tuning in to watch.
Thank you to McKinnon Basketball for arranging the
Aussie Hoopers, and to Craig Campbell of
Broadmeadows Basketball for his assistance organising
the Australian Rollers.

Centre Signage and Events
Thanks to North GC Basketball, Tamworth Basketball and
Sunbury Basketball for sharing these photos of their
Vicinity Centres Aussie Hoops signage on display in their
stadium.
Thanks also to Ballarat Basketball for featuring their
Vicinity Centres Aussie Hoops program during a recent
SEABL game and Basketball WA for holding an Aussie
Hoops themed clash as part of their SBL fixture.
Please ensure your signage is clearly visible during
sessions and that your banner is displayed somewhere
permanently where feasible.
Size 6 Singlets are coming!
We have understood the need for a Size 6 singlet since
receiving the feedback in the 2014 Program Review, and
are now in the position to purchase these for Centres to
provide to Aussie Hoopers as required. Due to arrive in
early July, these packs will be available for purchase in
early/mid July.
Renewal for 16/17 and Term 3 Registrations
We’re currently finalising the program updates for
2016/17, and will release these concurrently with
opening Term 3 registrations in early June. In the
meantime, you can have parents register interest
through the Locator if desired by using the Expression of
Interest program template.
We will be continuing the simple online renewal system
from last year, and encourage Centres to view the new
partnership terms and renew online before adding Term
3 programs.
3X3 as a Game Development Tool for U8-10
Last year we shared a video “Let’s see how the adults like
it”, where adults played soccer on an oversized pitch to
simulate the plight that U11s go through on a weekly
basis.
A similar video was created by USA Hockey, whilst in
Australia, the AFL have had great success reducing the
field size and team numbers for their U12s and below in
areas of player enjoyment and exciting viewing for
parents.
3X3 (Three-on-three) is being driven by FIBA in the youth
and young adult market to attract new participants to
the game, however the small-sided game concept being
applied through this initiative can also be used
effectively as part of the All-Star tier of the Vicinity
Centres Aussie Hoops program. During this stage,
participants have become proficient in basic technical
and tactical basketball skills, and an All-Star program
with a strong 3X3 theme could be used to develop or
revitalise an U8s or U10s competition with the following
potential benefits:
Skill Development
Players spend 20% more time on court in 3v3
compared with 5v5.
When splitting a standard court into two half-court
games, 12 players can be playing on-court at once
as opposed to 10.
Research shows that each player in 3v3 touches the
ball more often and performs more technical
elements within the same time period compared
with playing traditional 5v5 games (McCormick et
al. 2012).
A more even ‘competition’ through a greater
number of teams.
Greater flexibility on modified rules such as no-
steal, mandatory passing rules or ‘zones’ whereby
only certain players can enter the keyway each
quarter.
Social Development
Capacity to change teams weekly encourages social
interaction and making new friends.
Equipment & Resources
Greater flexibility over ring height (e.g. 8 foot for
one half-court, 10 foot for the other half-court)
Referee requirements are the same but if using the
joint coach/referee role you can free up officiating
resources for other fixtures. Other than having the
appropriate Working with Children
documentation, there are no specific requirements
for accredited referees in an Aussie Hoops setting
which can form a great platform for introducing
new referees to your association.
Flexibility to add rules such as ‘coach on the court’.
Reversible singlets sufficient for distinguishing
teams, thus easing fees and barriers for parents to
transition their child into basic forms of
competition.
Administration
Limited burden and investment on clubs to
purchase uniforms and manage teams.
No requirement to update competition by-laws
with modified rules.
Greater flexibility on fixturing, which could include
weekly round-robin style events.
Flexibility as to whether you adopt scoring.
Aussie Hoops payments are made upfront for the
term, reducing any requirement for additional float
or cash on hand to pay referees.

Coaches Corner
National Coaches Conference
We had at least six Aussie Hoops coaches attend the National Coaches Conference in Canberra earlier this month (apologies to any omissions):
Chris Clyne (Geelong Netball Basketball Centre)
Brad Haydon (Forestville Eagles)
Jason Palmer (Macedon Ranges)
Benjamin McCulloch (Barossa Basketball)
Nicole Howard (Warrandyte Venom)
Gerard Hillier (Southern Peninsula Sharks) Missed it? Don’t worry, we have you covered.
The videos from the Conference have now been
uploaded to the ASC’s Clearinghouse for Sport and are
available for Aussie Hoops Centres to view.
Find the Conference videos here!
If you don’t have Clearinghouse access, it’s free to create
an account here. Please make sure to indicate that you
are part of a sports club rather than the general public,
and you will receive access to the Conference notes
within 2 days.
Whilst many of the presentations are contextualised
within a High Performance setting, many (if not all) of the
themes can be adapted to all levels of coaching including
Vicinity Centres Aussie Hoops.
The slides that accompanied presentations are available
in the Aussie Hoops Coordinator’s Dropbox under a
newly created “Coaching and Delivery” folder.
Online Coaching Course
The new Centre Portal at www.aussiehoops.com.au has
the online Aussie Hoops Coaching Course added to it,
free to Aussie Hoops Centres. We encourage this course
as a tool to develop new coaches at your Vicinity Centres
Aussie Hoops program, and even as a refresher for
experienced coaches.
The course takes about 90-120 minutes to complete.
First and Last activities
Give some special thought over the coming weeks as to
what you use as your first activity and your last activity.
Whilst most parents will (and are required to) stick
around to watch the entire session, there will be parents
who will leave once their child is settled into the session
and return once it is time to collect them. These activities
will form the strongest impression of your program (and
our sport) above all else.
Therefore, first and last activities (and ideally all
activities) should:
Have every child active for the duration of the
activity.
Be highly fun and engaging.
Involve some form of sportsmanship (high-fives,
handshakes) and teamwork.
Avoid scenarios which leave less confident/skilled
players feeling uncomfortable (leave each kid
feeling like gold as they leave, not just the
‘winners’!)
