The impact of Bay to Ocean on a writer

(I received several reviews from the students who attended the writerrsquosconference in March I thought I would print them as I get to them so they canhave your full attention so this is one of them The others will follow nextmonth Interesting is their perspective of going to a first conference on writingAlways good to see things through the eyes of our youthmdashBonnie Feldsteineditor)

The following is an excerpt from comments by Chesapeake Collegestudent Rebecca Dey In my fourth semester at Chesapeake (this is attempt two at college) andworking through only my second general education English class it was anhonor to be chosen out of hundreds of others of my peers for the opportunityThen again my time so far at Chesapeake has been filled with surprises mostof which involve what it feels like to be seen as someone with valid potential intheir chosen field and to be given amazing chances to foster that potential intotrue skill

The best part about the whole day however was the audiences In every roomthe crowds around me were energetic witty and excited it was a chargedatmosphere of willing aspirants and gentle experts eager to come out of theirshells and share ideas lessons and most of all hope That was what I lovedthe most even beyond the speakers and their humble inspiring words ndash thehope I saw on the faces of the other people around me It was upliftingwatching people sitting clutching their notebooks wondering to themselves ldquoAmI a writerrdquo perk when the panelistsrsquo assured them ldquoYou arerdquo Validation was thebiggest souvenir I think many people took away from the conference and that Ithink speaks volumes about the conference and its impact on the regionrsquoscommunity

History in the making Our mystery for this issue concerns the year 1990 Where were you I wasliving in Indianapolis at the time still thinking that the Eastern Shore meant theAtlantic coastline However the Eastern Shore Writers Association was celebrating its fifth year in1990 It was a ldquogrowing organizationrdquo with a membership somewhere betweenfifty-four (the count given in the 1986 membership list) and 130 (the 1992 countgiven in a Baltimore Sun article) They had a good year A busy year My probing shows meetings in Salisbury(at least two) Cambridge and Easton (at least one each) and a holidaymeeting at the ldquoPiersant homerdquo One meeting featured a speaker CharlesCamp who presented information on regional grants for writers and artistsAnother speaker was Gwen Freeman They also held the second annual Writersrsquo Conference on March 30-311990 According to an article in the Salisbury News and Advertiser the facultyincluded C Michael Curtis John Williams Joyce Kornblatt and Ann Knox But herersquos what Irsquod really like to know Who was president My research shows that Dot Kenney was vice president It shows too thatNan (Gianni DeVincentis) Hayes was president the year before and ElaineWallingford was president in 1991 Irsquove spoken to both Nan and Elaine andtheyrsquore unsure Irsquom hoping that one of you reading this might have been a member back then Irsquom hoping that there are some old membership lists or newsletters from 1990that give more details The ldquomysteryrdquo might simply be that there was a changemade during this period from officers serving a calendar year to a fiscal year Perhaps you can help ldquomake historyrdquo and solve our mystery If you can let meknow susanwordsworthversecom Or 410-886-2790

In my childhood innocence I had not a clue at the time but Warwick was thehome town of the brilliant novelist William Styron Years later I became a hugeadmirer of his work like so many other fans and actually had the chance tointerview and write about him for the Richmond Times-Dispatch

My wife and I moved to Salisbury from Atlanta in 2013 when she accepted aposition as chair of the Department of Natural Sciences at the University ofMaryland Eastern Shore I began my career a long long time ago as a reporterfor the Times-Dispatch covering a wide range of beats in the state bureausystem Higher education was my favorite After leaving journalism I spentmost of my career working in university communications at two of the countryrsquosgreat research universities and academic health centers Johns Hopkins inBaltimore and Emory in Atlanta

Like many I have found the Eastern Shore a welcome respite from life in highgear It took a while to slow down and get adjusted We can sit on our deck andwatch the bald eagles and osprey fish in the Wicomico River Life unfolds at itsown pace Itrsquos good How did you come to ESWA and why you wanted to serve as ourPresident-elect I think the first time I ever heard of ESWA was through the Delmarva ReviewSitting in my living room in Salisbury one night two years ago I stumbledacross DR on the Internet After downloading the latest issue on Kindle I founda very affecting poem about a man flying home at night to visit his dying fatherCurious about the author one William Peak I turned to the contributorrsquos blurbsin the back I was intrigued to learn he had written an unpublished novel So Itracked him down at the Talbot County public library The rest as they say ishistory That book an historical novel of the Dark Ages was called TheOblatersquos Confession Now many other authors and titles have followed SecantPublishing has become very successful I am grateful to say The EasternShore in short is loaded with talent Some of it is visible Some of it is hiddenawaiting discovery I am a great fan of authors In fact I am in awe of authors Itis such a hard and lonely thing to do writing a book When it gets published itjust might change your life What a thrill to be part of that

ESWA has accomplished a lot There is so much more to do The Bay toOcean Conference and the Delmarva Review are our most publicly visible
