May is MAP testing time again. MAP stands for “Measures of Academic Progress” and is a test that Wyoming school districts use to measure what students have learned in math, reading, writing and science. SVMS gives this test twice a year, in the Fall and Spring. “The beautiful thing about learning is that no one an take it away from you.”

Orchid Garden is a non-profit and non-governmental organization with the basic aim of providing and protecting the rights, welfare and health of discriminated and deprived children of Nepal. The sole purpose of the Orchid Garden Nepal (OGN) is to provide care and a quality education for all children who attend. The aim is to help these children grow, learn, discover but most importantly, to be a normal kid.

The Garden School is a day care center, early elementary school, and day hostel for children ages 6 months to 9 years old, belonging to parents or single mothers/fathers dealing with issues of addiction, abuse, and neglect. Their goal is to foster independent children who can one day contribute to Nepal and the world.

Academic Bowl The academic bowl was a success for students at SVMS. Mrs. Julie Lewis and Mrs. Samantha Call took 16 students this year. The five students (pictured on left) took top honors. They are Jerry Baker, Ben Smith, Duncan Elder, Lanny Johnson, and Taryn Klindt. The SVMS team (pictured below) had a great educational experience, and a fun filled day.

Questions for the Academic Bowl are taken from Middle School curriculum and include questions on math, history, literature, and geography. The Academic Bowl is sure to become a SVMS yearly tradition.

Scrubs Camp is offered to 8th graders and is hosted by Star Valley Medical Center. Students get a chance to interact with different health care professionals and learn about careers in the medical field through tours, workshops, and hands-on demonstrations. The camp will be held in June and forms are available at the office or online at svmcwy.org.

Established in 1929, the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is one of the nation's premier organizations established to recognize outstanding middle level students. More than just an honor roll, NJHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Character, and Citizenship. Mrs. Julie Lewis does an outstanding job with NJHS. SVMS will end the year with an awards program, and in the Fall new students will be inducted into the program.

On May 16, we will be on our new Fall schedule for the last two weeks of the year. This is the new 166 day school year that will begin in August 2016. SVMS will be starting 15 minutes later, at 8:20 instead of 8:05, and will be getting out at 3:25 instead of 2:45. We are excited to have the district on the same schedule again!
