MAY 2016 Save the Date! Probus Club of Mountain View Our Strength is Fellowship, our Success is Participation President’s Message It’s hard to believe that another year is almost over! I know it’s only May, but the year-end for The Probus Club of Mountain View is May 31 st . Our Annual General Meeting will be held on our regular meeting day on June, 9 th . At that meeting, our auditor or scrutineer will report on the financial statements of the year ending May 31 st , and the Management Committee for the year 2016-2017 will be elected. A more formal notice regarding the AGM will be sent to you by our Secretary Bridget Schmidt, one month prior to the AGM. The AGM portion of the June meeting will take approximately 15 minutes and the regular meeting will take place after that, complete with two very special speakers: Doug Boy and Jamie Dougall, who over a period of nine months attended a workshop in Toronto where they built their own guitars. Their talk and demonstration promises to bring an entertaining and interesting close to our year. May 31 st is the cut-off date for the renewal of memberships. If you have not yet done so, please pick up your renewal form and return it ASAP to Angela Keller as we have 80 people on the waiting list. We respectfully urge you to ask yourself if you are taking advantage of what the club has to offer and contributing to the social life of the club. If not, perhaps your membership would be better used by someone who is new to Collingwood and anxious to join a Probus Club to meet new people and establish friendships in his/her new community. President’s Message It’s hard to believe that another year is almost over! I know it’s only May, but the year-end for The Probus Club of Mountain View is May 31st. Our Annual General Meeting will be held on our regular meeting day on June, 9th. May 31st is the cut-off date for the renewal of memberships. If you have not yet done so, please pick up your renewal form and return it ASAP to Angela Keller as we have 80 people on the waiting list. MAY 2016 SPEAKER – DR TOM STIFF – Getting to Mars – What’s the Plan?

Dr. Tom Stiff holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Waterloo, and both a Master of Science Degree in Experimental Space Science, and a Ph.D. in Theoretical Astrophysics from York University. Throughout

his career, Tom has been an invited guest lecturer and researcher at various institutions, including Stanford University, the University of Arizona, the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario, and the National Astronomical Radio Observatory in West Virginia.

Tom also has over 30 years of teaching and consulting experience at the secondary school and university level. He is currently a semi- retired professor of Physics and Mathematics at the Orillia campus of Lakehead University, and continues to maintain a busy career as a consultant. Tom worked for 15 years with NASA’s manned Space Flight Program at Space Center Houston in Texas and at the Kennedy Space Flight Center in Florida. He has also shared his expertise in Astronomy and Space Science with various organizations including the Discovery Channel, and the National Research Council., and was part of a three-person team, along with his wife Susan, responsible for the development of K-12 educational resources for the Canadian Space Agency.

His talk today will focus on NASA’s most recent plans for a manned mission to Mars. In the past few months some amazing technological breakthroughs have been achieved in the US space program, particularly as it relates to getting humans to Mars. In addition to the race to develop automated self-landing and reusable rockets, NASA is working with private partners to find solutions to all of the problems associated with living and working on the red planet. Unlike current missions to the International Space Station, a mere 400km overhead, Mars lies tens of millions of miles further in space. How will we make the journey, and why will it take so long? What is it really like to walk on the surface of Mars? What’s the weather like? How will a mission survive without supply ships? How does the crew protect themselves from the hazards of space? The challenges in reaching Mars, and their potential solutions, are outlined in this non-technical talk. Richly illustrated with photos and drawings this talk will walk you through NASA’s latest plans, from the launch pad to Mars and home again.

Last Month’s Speaker: Judith Banville As a personal historian and reporter, Judith took us back to that unforgettable May

31st 1985, where Barrie was ravaged by a tornado. She brought survivors together to share their stories at a Show & Tell Simcoe County event. Her talk reminded us all that in hard times we need each other for support.

$ 76 each – 50/50 Draw won by Chris Cable & Nick Baker

Thanks Laurie, David & Mark for selling tickets & counting the $$$

Once again, thanks to all of you loyal buyers!!!
