 Parkland Prairie Preserve –  

Restoring pollinator forage after noxious weeds have been removed.

 Several people from various groups conducted a site inventory of plantsand animals.  About 30 groups are interested in this property in additionto beekeepers.  We expect that the community project will end up being

something really special. 

 Bees at the Governor’s Mansion! 

 Congratulations to the Olympia Beekeepers Association for getting twocolonies to the governor’s mansion!  This effort took a couple of years ofwork, and resulted in extensive news coverage.  There’s a real buzz

about bees in Washington!

Are your bees all settled in? 

Packages and nucs arrived!  Swarms are …. well swarming! Don’t know about you, but it always excites me to install some new

bees.  Many of us suffered great losses last winter (including me), so theboxes of bees and stories of swarms are a welcome sign of hope.

 Make sure you feed, feed, feed your packages, nucs and swarms.

It takes a lot of food to make wax and build comb.

  

Dr. Dewey Caron is our speaker on May 2nd. We are pleased to bring in internationally known bee expert, author,and engaging speaker Dr. Dewey Caron to our May meeting.  Now anOregon resident, professor emeritus from the University of Delaware,and member of the national Bee Informed Partnership, Dr. Caron is oneof the nation’s top beekeeping educators.  He will have books for sale,

or bring your own copies if you want a signature. 

 Spring Fair a great success!

 Thanks to Andy Matelich, with guidance from Alisa Shorey, for

organizing the bee booth and honey sales at the Spring Fair.  And thanksto all of you who helped to staff the booth and sell honey.  There was lotsof interest and attention at the booth, especially over the weekend withits glorious weather.  Proceeds from our sales help to support speakers,

workshops, and club expenses.

 Apiary 

Larry Golden 

We had a great turnout to our April Apiary Day.Most of the people that showed up hadn’t received their bees, and thiswas the first time some of them had been in a hive. Most everyone

suited up and we dove into 6 hives. I walked them through one hive as agroup and explained what we were doing and what we should be lookingfor. I turned them loose on two other hives. Everyone did great. Weeven had one member go into a hive without any gear on. This was an

awesome experience for him and he did great. 

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the next apiary day, May 21st.  We have a new process when you show up. You will need to sign in andagree to our new Hold Harmless agreement. This is due to our newinsurance policy requirements and attorney recommendations.

      

   

            

         

Volunteers are needed!!PCBA is an all­volunteer organization. 

Having everyone pitch in helps to spread the work around.   

We need: **Someone to update the web page** 

Requires some experience and knowledge of websites, comfort using anupdating system (ours is very user­friendly), ability to link files and

pages, and about 1 hour a week of work.  Talk with Larry Golden or Franclyn Heinecke.

**Apiary help one Saturday a month**Jeff needs at least one journeyman student to help him with the monthly

apiary day inspections, and another person to take care of logistics forthe day ­­ making sure people sign up, are members, etc.   One Saturday a month, from 11 AM to about 12:30 ­ 1:00 PM.

Dr. Caron's request for info about Pacific Northwest Beekeeping:  

Dr. Dewey Caron, our May speaker, has set up an online survey to getinformation from Pacific Northwest beekeepers to get better data on

how we care for our bees and how well they fare. By having thisinformation on beekeeping specific to the Pacific NW, we will be betterable to find beekeeping management strategies. Please take a few
