G reetings, Arkansas Corvair enthusiasts. Our Arkansas CORSA

chapter is, again, at the outset of another business year of Corvair

gatherings and activities. As stated in our club bylaws, the club’s fiscal year

(business year) begins on May 1st and ends on April 30th of the next calendar

year.

I promised to Todd Sanders that my message to members (in this May

newsletter) would be brief. My first order of business is to express sincere

thanks to everyone who served and supported our Arkansas Corvair Club dur-

ing the 2015-16 business year. Most importantly, I express sincere thanks to

all of our elected officers who serve faithfully: Keith LaCrosse (president),

Clyde Jones (vice president), Elvis King (treasurer), and JB King (secretary).

Likewise, we owe thanks and appreciation to Todd Sanders who toils monthly

to publish our newsletter and keep us informed. Our gratitude and thanks to

everyone.

I have noted approximately 14 pairs of “unfamiliar” names (husbands and

wives) on the ACC membership list that I do not recall as club members when

I departed the United States, in October of 2012, for my 18-month “sabbatical”

in eastern China. Among the 14 pairs of names, I’ve chatted casually with sev-

eral newer members, during our meetings and activities over the past 24

months, since my return to Arkansas. Over the next twelve months, I’ll be

working to “get to know” all of you better and doing my best to greet you by

first names, as occasions allow.

I will have more information to share when we meet in North Little Rock on

May 17. Until then, I say thank you for the honor of leading our Arkansas Cor-

vair Club and happy air-cooled motoring to one and all.

Best regards,

Bill Smith

From your ACC President

April Minutes

The Arkansas Corvair Club met at our regular meeting place, US Pizza on McCain Park Drive, NLR, on Tuesday, April 19, with 28 in attendance. The meeting was called to order by president, Keith La-Crosse. The minutes from our March meeting were read. A correction was made on the dates of the Cars & Cycles Against Cancer event at Blytheville. The dates listed were incorrectly listed as June14-15 and it is June 4-5. Elvis King gave a financial report. We currently have $5,382.42 in our treasury. Old Business

Tom Brown said that we can tour the Petit Jean car museum on Saturday, May 21. We will meet at the car museum at 10:00 that morning and eat lunch after the tour. At our May 17 meeting we will get a head count of the members who will attend and make reservations for that number to eat lunch at the lodge. New Business

Keith opened the floor for the vote on new officers. They are: President, Bill Smith; Vice President, Dan Hill; Secretary, JB King; Treasurer, Elvis King. Todd Sanders made the motion that we accept this slate of officers, Aaron Swift seconded the motion, and it passed. Announcements

Keith thanked Jerry and Donna Pentzer for once again hosting the annual open house and anniversary celebration at their home in Ozark. Upcoming Events

Cars & Cycles Against Cancer, Blytheville, AR June 4-5 CORSA convention, Springfield, IL, July 12-16 Shepherd of the Hills Super Summer Cruise, Branson, MO

August 11-13 Great Plains Roundup, Tulsa, OK, September 23-25

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned. JB King, Secretary

Over the years, there have been at least a couple of Corvair owners tell me the reason they have not upgraded their cars to the internally regulated 10SI or 12SI alternator is that there seemed no way to easily work in that pesky rear strut. We have seen some nicely fabricated, and some not so nicely bent/cobbled factory, struts that probably do the job just as well as the production piece, but sure looked untidy.

Not being burdened by the "it's gotta be stock" notion, I changed my '66 Monza from the stock alternator to the internally regulated kind several years ago. When my Spyder was nearing completion, I also converted it from the long heavy generator to the 10SI model. When you put the 10SI frame on the stock front, with the two-terminal plug in either the upright or aft position, the two positions where the modified wiring seems to look neater, the boss for a rear brace is located nowhere near where it should be to use the stock piece.

Lots of Corvair owners have had one of these internally regulat-ed alternators on their engines, without a rear brace, for years with-out a failure. Maybe there have been some, but I have not been told of one. You sure can't run a gener-ator without a rear bracket. As heavy and long as they are, the mounting ears can break off and I have one example of an early gen-erator adapter plate with one of the

tabs broken off.

Last Summer at the Knoxville convention I saw a way to use a stock rear bracket with the upgraded alternator. But, you must index the alter-nator body so the two-terminal connector points toward the front. In my mind this makes for an awkward orientation for the modified wiring harness, but with a couple of longer bolts and spacers, you can use that stock brack-

et. While completing the engine re-build for my van project, I decided to see how this arrangement would work.

At first, using washers as spac-ers, I found that the spacer tube for the alternator needed to be about 5/8 inch long and the bottom tube should be about 1 1/8 inches. (see

the arrows in fig one) The stock bracket comes to within about 1/8 inch of the rear bearing of the alter-nator, but it does clear. I don't think I am going to leave it like that, but I did want to show our ACC members that it can be done! Keep on Corvairing!

Dee Jones needs a count of those who will need a room at the Branson Shephard of the Hills event. She has secured a block of rooms for $75 per night at the Barrington Hotel. You can make reservations at the Barrington be calling 417-334-8866. Mention the Arkansas Corvair Club when calling.

Tom Brown will need a count at the 17th meeting for those plan-ning to attend the Petit Jean Moun-tain Car Museum trip.

Frank Campbell update. You may be aware that Frank had surgery on his foot recently. A report from Frank indicates that the surgery was successful and that the foot is healing very well.

He has now disposed of his crutches and “boot” and begun put-ting weight on it. Will need to take it easy for a few more weeks but Frank says considering the alternative, the surgery and recovery was well worth it.
