Newark Native Shaquille O’NealTalks About His Roots

He can still nail a jumper from 3-point range and talk a little smack about it, too.

Newark native Shaquille O’Neal — one of the NBA’s most prolific scorers, a champion and most valuable players. He retired after 19 seasons. He now analyzes the game on TNT and has become a developer in downtown Newark where he plans to live part-time on the top floor.

“I’m supposed to do it because my mother told me to do it. My mom said to me, “you need to go back and fix that place up. You need to go back to Newark and fix Newark up,” he said.

Shaq spent his early years at the Boys and Girls Club of Newark on Avon Avenue.

What did it mean to him to have this club?

“This is where it all started. Both parents had jobs,

Newark, New Jersey

couldn’t afford baby-sitters. Good thing for me I lived right across the street, Clinton and Avon, right there, those projects right there. I was instructed after school to come here and wait until one of them could get me,” he said.

He says it was at the Boys and Girls Club of Newark that at an early age he found himself and realized that whatever he did would stand taller than the height he would ever reach.

“This was my safe haven, but it’s also a place where I could cultivate my dreams, because I go home, Doctor J and I come over here and practice. I go home, LL Cool J and then I come over here and we’d be over in the corner break dancing, having a good time so I owe this place, I owe the Boys and Girls Club of America. That’s why I keep coming back. Also, you know, it’s my way of telling kids that hey, if I can make it you can make it. I wasn’t the smartest, I didn’t get a 1900 on the SAT. I wasn’t a great athlete from age 9. Hard work, perseverance, being a leader and not a

follower and believing anything is possible is how I made it, so I always come and give kids that secret,” he said.

He learned a lot about himself in Newark.

“The first thing I learned was how to carry criticism and motivation. I was coming over here at 9, 10 years old bigger than everybody so of course when you’re bigger than everybody, everybody expects you to be Michael Jordan already, but I was terrible. I couldn’t dribble, couldn’t play, couldn’t dunk, but always had that drive and that determination so I was able to turn criticism into motivation,” he said.

Shaq credits Cynthia Banks — now the VP of operations — with putting and keeping him on the right track.

“She’s like everybody’s aunt, everybody’s mom, everybody’s grand mom. She just made sure that all the kids went in the right direction. Her rules were very simple: ‘Let me see your homework first.’ So education was very important and after we showed her the homework we got to come up here and play,” Shaq said.

When asked if he was not here, and the Boys and Girls Club were not here, where would he be, he said, “Well I was already a low-level juvenile delinquent,” he said. “I mean low-level, I was a little mischievous, getting into trouble. Stealing gum, a follower and not a leader.”

You couldn’t chew that gum at the Boys and Girls Club because Banks wouldn’t allow it.

“Oh yeah, she didn’t play that at all, but where would I be? I think about it all the time. I had to learn the hard way on how to become a leader and not a follower. Probably, 50, I got friends and family who didn’t makeit, who decided to go the easy route and didn’t make

it. I could have possibly gone that route. I could have possibly went the route I went before but this was here.

“I took advantage of it. Thank God for organizations like this and people like Miss Banks. She knew that I was a little mischievous kid so she would always be around the corner, ‘What are you doing, boy?’ ‘Get over here,’ ‘Stop that,’ and sometimes as a child you need that, you need that guidance. That’s why I come back here to the one that I grew up at and, you know, pool, gym refurbished, dentistry center, computers, because if it wasn’t for this place there wouldn’t be Shaquille O’Neal or a Shaquille O’Neal brand.”

Through his support and fund-raising leadership, the vision center offers free eye exams and free eyeglassesto children who see Shaq as more than a celebrity.

“Some people may call it giving back, but I’m taking orders from the person who raised me — Lucille O’Neal Harrison,” he said. “You have to [vow to keep promises]. Any man that doesn’t keep a promise to his mother isn’t a real man. Any man that doesn’t honor and love his mother, or any woman, is not a real man. So her mother told her when I was born, ‘This one’s special. Watch out for this one. This one’s going to be world known.’ One year old. My grandmother told me that everybody’s going to know this guy’s name.”

The Rainbow Comes and Goes: A Mother and Son on Life, Love, and Loss

By Anderson Cooper and Gloria Vanderbilt

This is a book like no other I have ever read: a dialogue between mother and son, both public figures in their different ways, who have chosen to share an intensely private attempt to get to know one another before it is too late. After all, perennially youthful and energetic though she is, Gloria Vanderbilt is 92 years old and Anderson Cooper, although still under 50, is the author of “Dispatches from the Edge.” Given all the baggage this pair brings to the table, it is a remarkable undertaking, but it seems to have been a resounding success, for as Mr. Cooper writes, the e-mail his mother wrote him on the morning of her 91st birthday, “ended up changing our relationship, bringing us closer than either of us had ever thought possible.”

This pair is an odd couple in so many ways, yet one of their discoveries in the course of this exchange is how similar they are as well as how different, one of many surprises along the way. They manage this most intimate of exercises with consummate tact and grace, always showing the utmost respect for each other. Indeed, in another, more gracious age, one would unhesitatingly have referred to them as a lady and a gentleman. And that is what they show themselves to be, something which has far less to do with ancestry and birth than with the innate qualities they reveal that they possess. It is no mean feat to delve so fearlessly, while remaining so obviously caring and concerned for one another.

As a seasoned journalist as well as a naturally curious son, Mr. Cooper is fascinated by the fact that his mother

has literally been famous since the moment she was born to a to a scion of one of America’s most famous families who drank himself to death when she was little more than a year old. The custody battle between her hapless mother and powerful aunt, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, played out in tabloid and newsreel when she was only eight years old, made her the original “Poor Little Rich Girl.” It is clear from Mr. Cooper’s sympathetic but firm effort to get Miss Vanderbilt to tell him what it felt like to be the girl he has seen on film that it seemed to her then that she was “at the still point of the turning world” (to borrow T.S. Eliot’s phrase). It is equally clear this experience in the eye of a storm raging all around her — and that would continue to deprive her of the support of much-loved figures and turn her into a kind of shuttlecock between warring family factions — determined the maelstrom that would characterize the rest of her life.

On this voyage of discovery between mother and son, there are a lot of surprises along the way. How literary both are, particularly Miss Vanderbilt, who will reach for quotes ranging from Victorian poet Algernon Charles Swinburne to a contemporary like Susan Sontag. There is no doubt of just how meaningful these are for her, necessary lifelines. And Mr. Cooper has a gift for dealing with those (rare) occasions when subjects veer too close to the line of Too Much Information with a nice touch of humor:“Perhaps the only thing more embarrassing than hearing about your sex life was discovering it was more interesting than my own,” he informs his mother.

Although the authors have named their book from “Ode: Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood,”which contains many lines appropriate to their quest, it is the title of another Wordsworth poem which to me sums them up: “Resolution and Independence.” It is natural to think of them in terms of that particular poet for, after all, he invented the “Wordsworthian Crisis Poem,” which seeks to reconcile contrarieties by confronting them. And if any two people have lived through way more than their share of crises, singly and collectively, it is Anderson Cooper and Gloria Vanderbilt. Their brave engagement with what they confront so staunchly in this extraordinary dialogue leaves me quite simply awestruck.

Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson Get Emotional During Sweet ‘American Idol’ Finale Moment

The original trio of American Idol judges, Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell, celebrated the two-hour series finale with a fun, heartfelt reunion

Abdul and Jackson first took the stage without Cowell on Thursday to congratulate host Ryan Seacrest for being the only personality to stick with Idol through all 15 seasons. As a reward they presented him with a giant “American Idol” neon sign that Seacrest admitted he had no idea what he’d do with.

After presenting the unique parting gift, the group was “surprised” by the 56-year-old acerbic Brit who walked out from behind them to complete the triumvirate while the crowd cheered.

Without skipping a beat, Cowell immediately struck up his love-hate relationship with Abdul once again, by giving her the “opportunity” to apologize for “being so mean to the contestants when we were trying to be helpful.”

“You were really horrible and now I think is the time to apologize to America,” he continued.

With Cowell showing off his signature snark, Abdul looking increasingly annoyed and Jackson laughed uncomfortably while standing off to the side, it felt like fans had been transported back to the very first season of Idol all over again.

But before things could get too awkward, Cowell changed course and shared a message of heartfelt appreciation.

“On behalf of us, thank you, America, for inviting us into your homes,” Cowell said with his arm around Abdul’s shoulders. “Thank you to the contestants, and to Fox, for actually put us on the air.”

Turning toward Jackson and Abdul, Cowell added, “[And] to you guys for actually being my best friends now. Now, I’m going to miss you.” “We love you man,” Jackson responded, rubbing Cowell’s back.

“This was an amazing journey,” Abdul chimed in. “I know you love the word journey.”

Cowell also had a message for the season’s final two, Trent Harmon and La’Porsha Renae: “Enjoy yourselves and remember the fans who voted for you.”

Abdul couldn’t let the reunion come to a close without showing some love to the current panel of judges, Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick, Jr.

“You as a panel have been doing a wonderful job, thank you,” Abdul offered and the current judges stood at their table with tears in their eyes.

It was a fun, fitting final appearance for the original trio as the show they helped pioneer came to a close.

St. Jude Children’s Research Foundation Announces FedEx/St. Jude Angels And Stars Gala

St. Jude Children’sResearch Hospital willcelebrate its 14th annual FedEx/St. Jude Angels and Stars Gala, by welcoming back model and television personality, as well as co-founder, Daisy Fuentes, for an evening of fine dining and Latin music at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 14, at the Intercontinental Hotel in downtown Miami.

The annual event raises funds to help ensure families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food – because all a family should worry about is helping their child live.

Cuban-born American journalist and one of Time magazine’s “25 Most Influential Hispanics in America,” Cristina Saralegui, will be recognized for her commitment to giving back and educating the Hispanic community. “Being recognized by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is a true honor. Lending my voice to matters that touch my heart is what’s it’s all about. These children need our help and they need your help,” said Saralegui.

Cristina will join approximately 600 guests for an evening of celebration that includes a St. Jude family speaker, live and silent auctions, and a special performance by Latin Grammy Award-winning duo Chino y Nacho.

Additionally, as a very special highlight of the event, the evening will also feature a live performance by Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Richard Marx.

“I am humbled to see how far this gala has come from its inaugural year, and grateful because it continues to help so many kids at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Anything I can do, year after year, I do. I hope my participation inspires others to get involved. It’s going to be an amazing night, and I can’t think of a better cause,” said Daisy Fuentes.

Also, television and radio personalities Enrique Santos, Elizabeth Gutierrez, Ismael Cala and Karla Monroig will serve as celebrity award presenters.

Additionally, Miami based businesswoman and philanthropist, Patty Gutiérrez, will also be recognized for her longtime fundraising efforts in support of the St. Jude mission. Gutiérrez’s son Stephan, now 21, is a former St. Jude patient who at the age of 11 was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in his stomach. Stephan’s treatment at St. Jude included surgery to remove the tumor, followed by chemotherapy, a bone marrow transplant and radiation therapy. Stephan is now finished with treatment and returns to St. Jude for checkups annually.

In the past, the gala has honored some of the most recognized and celebrated artists in Latin music and entertainment for their humanitarian work, such as Don Francisco, Romero Britto, Juanes, Emilio and Gloria Estefan, Luis Fonsi, Juan Luis Guerra, Tommy and Thalia Mottola, Chef Adrianne Calvo and Coach Don Shula.

For more information about tickets, sponsorships and auction items, visit stjude.org/miamigala or contact Barbara Mari at (800) 278-3383 or [email protected].

This year’s gala sponsors include: FedEx Express, Gutierrez Family Foundation, Mosteiro Family Foundation, Carnival Foundation, Gloria Estefan Foundation, Neutrogena, Zoological Wildlife Foundation, Anthony Abraham Foundation, International Dermatology Institute, Grupo CIMA, Yezz, Diario, Las Américas, Univision Radio, C-ComGroup Inc., American Tower Corporation, Arteasan, Arven Financial, Ernst & Young, HSBC, Omnicom Media Group, Rana Furniture, Wellmax, Tu-Be Global Spirits, FUNKSHION, Event Design Group, Nuage Designs, Ocean Drive Magazine, Casa Diris and The Dream Team Agency.

The History of Stetson Hats

In 1865, with $100, John B. Stetson rented a small room, bought the tools he needed, bought $10 worth of fur and the John B. Stetson Hat Company was born. A year later the “Hat of the West” or the now famous “Boss of the Plains” hat was born and the name Stetson was on its way to becoming the mark of quality, durability, innovation and beauty. John B. Stetson changed the image of hatters and built one of America’s most well-known and successful businesses. The longevity and history of the John B. Stetson Company is based on innovation and quality! John B. Stetson led the hat industry his entire career by designing new hat styles for fashion and function. When it came to quality it was his creed and for the past 150 years it has so stamped the product that the name and the word are synonymous. Stetson is the standard in hats, the essence of the spirit of the West and an icon of everyday American lifestyle. Because of its authentic American heritage, Stetson remains as a part of history and, for the same reason will continue into the future. Stetson, it’s not just a hat, it’s the hat.

GLORIA VANDERBILT SHARES ‘ALL OUR SECRETS’with Son Anderson Cooper in Touching New Documentary

16 As Seen In/May 2016

Gloria Vanderbilt is pulling back the curtain on her remarkable life.

In a poignant new trailer for Nothing Left Unsaid, her upcoming documentary with son Anderson Cooper, the famous heiress looks back at her life and reflects on her expansive career, fascinating love life and experiences with both tragedy and success.

“Growing up, it didn’t really have any reality for me, that whole Vanderbilt side of the family,” Cooper, 48, says in the trailer of his mother, who was born into one of the wealthiest and most famous families in American history.

“My mom has lived many different lives and has sort of inhabited many different skins,” he continues. “She’s got this public face, but the reality of her life is so different than what the public face is.”

Between intertwining old footage (including previously unseen home videos) and present-day conversations between Vanderbilt and her journalist son, the documentary will explore the life of the famous socialite/designer/artist/actress.

“These will be fascinating to read. All our secrets!” Vanderbilt, 92, tells Cooper in the trailer, as the twosift through her archive of letters and photos.

“People were so fascinated with this family that apparently had everything,” she says while footage plays of her parents, Reginald Claypoole Vanderbilt and Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt.

But Vanderbilt notes, “I never felt that I belonged. I felt like I was an imposter.”

“As a young kid, I didn’t know the origins of this sadness that permeated her life,” Cooper says. “She has this drive, and that drive makes it impossible to have a calm existence.”

“She’s the last person in my family alive, so I don’t want there to be anything left unsaid between us,” he says.

Nothing Left Unsaid premiered April 9 at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.

This year’s Met Gala theme was “Manus X Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.” Somewhere between “once upon a time” and “in a galaxy far, far away” were spectacular and original breathtaking gowns. The two most talked about gowns had the most exciting embedded technology that lights up the gown. In an epic showdown that can compare to any Project Runway challenge, acclaimed designer, Project Runway judge Zac Posen was up against the Project Runway All-Stars designer judge and one half of Marchesa, the beautiful Georgina Chapman.

Each designer created their own technological vision of the future with their own design esthetic. So, who won the competition between the two 2016 Met Gala gowns that light up? Who won the fashion technology battle?

While social media was all aflutter with fashionistas preparing for the ball, the real surprise belle of the ball was Claire Danes. At the 2016 Met Gala, she surprised the crowd with her shimmery “Cinderella” ball gown and simple, but elegant, up-do. Danes allowed the dress to do the talking, as she wore simple drop earrings and kept her styling clean with rose-pink lipstick.

The ball gown designer, Dane’s close friend, Zac Posen, aptly demonstrated that we do not need to give up whimsy when we embrace sensors and hi-tech. He shared the magical future of fashion as he deftly created a gown that was stunning on its own, but when the lights went out, then the true magic happened. This glow-in-the dark dress helps that handsome Prince Charming spot his fleeing fairy tale princess at the stroke of midnight, even in the darkest corners of the galaxy. This gown lights up!
