President’s Message —by Debbie RiceA representative from ClubCorp recently made contact with Hendersonville Country Club and invited us

to join their prestigious reciprocal alliance. ClubCorp is a Dallas, TX based company which has owned and managed private clubs since 1957. Currently they own or manage over 200 private clubs. ClubCorp also happens to manage a network of reciprocal clubs which includes their 200 clubs plus over a hundred more clubs - clubs like us. They observed that they didn’t have any western North Carolina clubs in their reciprocal network, so they did some due diligence, visited our Club, and chose to exclusively invite Hendersonville Country Club into their network. After studying their proposal, HCC’s Board of Directors accepted the invitation.

What does this mean? It means that beginning June 1 every Member of Hendersonville Country Club will have access to over 300 other private clubs at no additional charge. It also means that Members from over 300 private clubs (a total maximum of 2 tee times a day) will have limited access to visit HCC while in our area. Traveling to Atlanta and want to play golf? Get on Atlanta National Golf Club. How about Firestone Golf Club in Akron, OH? Or Pinehurst #9? Or Seabrook Island? Or Indian Wells Country Club in Palm Springs? Yes to all those clubs and hundreds more. And there are many, many city clubs all across the country in places like Napa, California, New York City, and Aspen, Colorado. When visiting these clubs our Members will pay the prevailing guest fees when applicable. There are restrictions. Such as no more than 2 visits to one particular club a month. And reservations will be required and must be

made through ClubCorp’s concierge service. For a complete roster of participating clubs view the online directory at www.clubcorp.com.

Additionally, our Members will have the opportunity to elect to join, for $50 a month, a category of reciprocal membership called Signature Gold which provides complimentary green fees and complimentary dining at more than 300 clubs. Signature Gold members can enjoy:• Two cart-fee only rounds of golf at each

participating country club, each month• Two complimentary four-course meals at

each participating dining club, each month For instance, if you spend winter in Tampa/St Pete, FL, and if you are Signature Gold, you will have access to 6 golf courses at which you can play twice a month each with no green fees. Current HCC Members will be able elect to join the Signature Gold category during a 60 day enrollment window without an initiation fee. If an HCC Member elects to join Signature Gold after that enrollment window, an initiation fee would be paid to ClubCorp.

There are many more details to learn about. A representative from ClubCorp will be at Hendersonville Country Club at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, May 23 to answer your questions and enroll our Members who elect to become their Signature Gold Members.

In summary, ClubCorp will not in any way own or manage Hendersonville Country Club. The reciprocity network costs nothing to an HCC Member who does not elect Signature Gold status. Members who do not elect into Signature Gold still have reciprocal privileges at 300 clubs. Visitors to HCC from other Clubs will occupy no more than 2 tee times in any given day. Many of our HCC Members will enjoy this new benefit to their membership and we are pleased to have been exclusively invited into this network.

Manager’s Message —by Anthony Chelena

In advance of pool season I promised to the Pool Committee and the Board of Directors

that I’d spend a whole page in the newsletter talking about the guest policy at the pool. Now why would I want to do that? Well, because the pool guest policy is the most argued about policy at the Club.

A local guest resides in Henderson, Buncombe, Transylvania, Rutherford, and Polk Counties. A local guest may visit the pool 2 times per month. Grandparents may bring their local grandchildren (under age 18) an unlimited amount of times per season. A Guest Fee is charged.

Some of our Members think the policy is too restrictive and some of our Members think the policy is not restrictive enough. Then there is a group of Members who decide to completely ignore the policy and just do what they want. The Pool Committee and the Board of Directors want to do something about this group- the ones who just do what they want: The “Catch me if you can” Members.

In my mind most these situations are rooted in one of two mindsets: 1) my child’s best friend is never going to be a Member of HCC and my child doesn’t have fun without

his friend, or 2) my grown daughter has been a Member all her life and she (and her husband) and cannot possibly afford a membership at HCC right now, but I’m glad they can visit all summer by signing in using my membership. (They can’t.) There are a few brazen “non-member fence jumpers” but most of these violations originate with a Member’s direct or tacit approval.

Our management of the guest policy has a fatal weakness - we depend on Members telling the truth to our young pool staff. How does the staff manage Members who walk in the gate and don’t tell the truth about who is walking in with them, or Members who are staying at home and allowing their grown children to sign in under their membership? The Board of Directors told me they consider this stealing. And they want me to report it to them.

How much control do we want to put at the pool gate? Do we want to require everyone to present a photo membership card with every family member’s photo? It would be a pretty good system but it would also be cumbersome… and costly. And if we did it, what would we do if you arrived one day without your or your child’s membership card? Would we deny admittance? I talked this problem through with some club manager friends and found that High Point Country Club successfully uses an optic scanner with tracking software. It solved their problem. While we were seriously looking at this system we got some committee pushback.

Too cumbersome, too invasive. We looked at fingerprint scanning systems and heard multiple reports of low reliability. Not workable. The point is we may be headed to a control system which may be costly and time consuming.

We concluded this offseason discussion by deciding to ask Members to be honest about who is visiting the pool and to ask Members to tell us when they see violations. And it doesn’t help to tell us the following day, or the next week, or in October. Member violators will be reported to the Board of Directors.

I am aware of all types of policies we could change to. For example, I know there are clubs who have vertical memberships which include all children, grandchildren, parents, spouses and in-laws. Likewise I am aware of clubs where each man, woman and child must pay for an individual membership. You and your fellow Members decide what the rules are at HCC. The Pool Committee recommends a policy to the Board of Directors and the board decides the policy. And when the Board sets a rule I say, “OK, the way we’ll enforce is I’ll tell you which Members aren’t following your rules.” And then Board of Directors, not me, not the lifeguards nor the Pool Manager, will take it from there.

I’m looking forward to a great season at the pool. It is such an asset and many, many Member families pay dues to our Club solely to use the pool. Call me if you have any questions about pool use.

Pool News —by Carly OwenbyAnother pool season is almost here! As the weather warms up, the lifeguard team is preparing the

pool for another successful summer. Our main goal is to ensure safety for all patrons while maintaining the overall cleanliness of the facility. We look forward to reconnecting with returning members as well as establishing relationships with new members.

Several events are already on the calendar for this pool season. There will be three sessions of group swim lessons offered this summer so that families can choose an option that best fits their schedule. Two morning sessions will be offered, June 18-21 and 25-28 or July 9-12 and 16-19 from 11:00-11:30am and one

evening session June 18-21 and 25-28 from 5:30-6:00pm. If you are interested in these group lessons, please sign up at the pool office after we open. In addition, private lessons will be available at your convenience. To sign up for private lesson please set up a time with the lifeguard of your choice. Mark your calendars to join us for the first Friday night cook-out of the season on June 8th. June 8th will also begin our extended hours on Thursday and Friday’s. For a full list of daily hours please visit the lifeguard office.

For more information regarding any events happening at the pool or to reverse the pool for a pool party, feel free to send me an email at [email protected].

We will be opening the gates for the summer May 25th at noon. We can’t wait to welcome everyone back to the pool for another wonderful summer!

Chef’s Corner —by Chef Steven BoegerServSafe certification from the National Restaurant Association offers three main programs for managers, frontline employees and front-of-house staff.

Country Clubs as well as Restaurants, bars, convenience stores, concessions and other establishments that carry food are required to train their employees in food safety and sanitation. There are many certifications available nationally, including ServSafe certification from the National Restaurant Association. ServSafe offers three main programs:The North Carolina State Health Department requires at least one employee on site to hold the ServSafe Manager Certification. The ServSafe Manager course is available online or in person at various locations and is taught by registered instructors who have been trained to teach the program. The in-person course is usually held over one full day with independent study required or over two full days from start to finish.

Having qualified ServSafe certified managers and food handlers can reduce the risk of food borne illness among your guests. It also helps preserve your reputation, protect you from civil or even criminal liability, reduce insurance premiums and keep you complaint with the law.

I would like to congratulate Sous Chef Curtis Alley, Kurtis Corydell, Maria Rosas, Maria Perez, and Hans Angstmann for completing and passing their serve safe class. This is truly an honor to have this large percentage of kitchen staff on board with food safety.

PLAY MAH JONGG What began as a small intimate group of ladies several years ago has turned into one of the larger social gatherings hosted by the Club on a regular basis. We love seeing the Clubroom full every Wednesday from 1-4 pm. If you would like to learn more about the Mah Jongg group, please contact Judy Petersen at 697-1967.

Nearly 40 people signed up the inaugural April event. We hope you will consider joining us. Please send all correspondence to [email protected]. The Second Event will be held Thursday May 17th. Here’s is how it works: HCC Supper Club will meet once a month on the 3rd Thursday. Groups of 6 to 8 will be formed and each will arrive at a host member’s home at 6 PM for drinks and appetizers*. After an hour of socializing each group drives to the Club to enjoy dinner together at 7:30 in the Main Clubhouse. At 9 PM all the groups will gather together in the Bar for dessert and coffee. Each month the participants will be mixed so over a period of a few months you will be meeting many members of the Club. The goal is to have a number of these groups gathering at the same time.

As a participant of the Supper Club, you will:1. Act as a host home on a rotating

basis2. * Bring your beverage of choice and

an appetizer to share each month3. Reserve your spot each month.

Golf News —by Ben Balentine Each year it seems necessary to remind our members how important the pace of play at HCC has become. We play between 24,000 and 26,000 rounds of golf per year with the majority being played between April and November. This

being the case, I hope you can see why it is imperative to maintain a pace of play that everyone can enjoy. A round of golf at Hendersonville Country Club should never take longer than four hours to play. Some may feel this pace is too fast but, remember, slow play is the result of bad habits and bad habits can be corrected by following these suggestions.

ALWAYS BE READY TO HIT• Proceed directly to your ball.• Plan your shot and select your club while

approaching your ball.• Take one practice swing and get ready while others

are hitting.• Carry a spare ball in your pocket. When doubt about

a stray ball, play a provisional.

DON’T WASTE TIME• Never record your score on or near the green.• Don’t leave your bag or cart in front of the green.

Leave it off to the side towards the next tee.• Set your extra clubs down between the pin and your

bag.• Give instructions only on the driving range.• When a ball is lost for two minutes wave the

following group through.• Drop off cart passenger, and then go to your ball.

ON THE TEE• The first player ready to hit should do so.• Let shorter hitter play first.• Watch other players drive so you can help determine

the location of ball.• After hitting, return your cart and be ready to

proceed.

ON THE GREEN• Park your cart and clubs to the rear of the green, in

line with the next tee.• Line up your putt before it’s your turn.• Putt continuously until you hole out, unless you are

in another player’s line. Remember to stay up with the group in front of you NOT in front of the group behind you.

Rule 3-C in your club handbook reads: “The golf committee request that if your group cannot keep pace with the group in front you must pick up your ball and proceed to the next hole”. The course ranger and golf staff will be empowered to administer this policy. Please cooperate with your staff and help play move at a reasonable pace.

COUPLES CHAMPIONSHIPOn Sunday June 10th we will host a Couples Championship. This competition will be open to married couples, significant others and singles wanting to pair up. You must have an established handicap to participate. There will be a shot gun start at 1:30pm with a cookout following play. The entry fee is $10.00 per couple and the cookout is optional. Come join us for a wonderful day of fun and fellowship.

SUMMER CLINICS Beginning in June the golf staff will be conducting Ladies and Junior Clinics each week throughout the summer. If you are interested in participating please call the golf shop at least one week in advance. The fee per session will be $15.00.

Ways to Participate

SMGA —by Don Moses

The HCC SMGA 2018 Golf season Opening Spring Tournament, a rousing success!

Great weather and 42 contestants provided for a memorable event, a Shamble, 2BB Net, with an opening breakfast, exciting play, and a fine

lunch with prizes awarded.

The winning threesome, with a net score of 104, were: Tom Rolls, Larry Doebler, and Greg Keokosky.

Closest to the pin were: Hole 2: Don Gregory, Hole 4: Jim Herrmann, Hole 13: Darell Menscer, Hole 17: Fred Wright

Congratulations to all!

We would again like to thank the tireless efforts of Dave Rourke, Fred Wright, Tom Rolls, the rest of the SMGA board and Ben Balentine, for arranging this event and making it flow so smoothly.

Please review the SMGA Schedule for 2018, which is on our site, hccsmga.org. Explore it to see what new events SMGA has planned! Many players belong, but do not participate.

2018 would be an excellent year to play again with the group, and meet the newer members in a relaxed setting.

The SMGA will participate in three inter-club tournaments as well this year, with The Cliffs Valley, May 2nd (Wednesday) being added to Cummings Cove, May 23rd (Wednesday), and Burlingame, June15th (Friday).

Please be aware that if you wish to participate in the 2018 SMGA Tournament, you must have participated in any five events played since last year’s championship, including 2017 and this season’s events.

WGA —by Lavinia ZimmermannThe WGA had our opening coffee on Thursday, March 29th and had an excellent turnout. It was so good to see so many familiar faces we haven’t seen in a long time and also several new ones. Ben Balentine gave us an update on all the changes in the USGA rules that will take effect in 2019. He also gave us several suggestions to speed up play.

We received our new yearbooks that Terry Stein did for us. They are beautiful and even contain a calendar of all our golf events. Thank you Terry! Please don’t forget to sign up for State Play Day that is on May 8th. Many fun play days are ahead so please refer to your book and sign up to play.

Fairway bunker shots can be intimidating and difficult for players of all abilities. Many players set up incorrectly and try to help the ball up and out of a bunker which causes

inconsistent contact. Remember that fairway bunker shots are completely different than green side bunker shots. Green side bunker shots are best played by striking the sand an inch behind the ball, using the sand to splash the ball out of the bunker. However fairway

bunker shots are best played by striking the ball before the sand.

Your set up position is very important for consistent contact. Start by playing the ball position slightly back in your stance. Allow your weight to be slightly forward. Grip down on the club a couple inches lower than normal. This will give you better control of the club during the swing. Take at least one more club than you normally would from this distance. Remember: when you grip down on the club, the ball will have a lower trajectory, thus the

ball will not carry as far as it would from a normal higher trajectory.

The most important tip for hitting consistent bunker shots is to keep the lower body as “quiet” or still as possible throughout the entire swing while maintaining your posture. Movement will cause you to hit behind taking to much sand or cause you to lift and hit on top of the ball. Slightly pinching your knees together at the address position will improve your balance and restrict the movement in your lower body.

Golf Tips —by Jay King

Grounds —by Craig DejongIf copious amounts of pollen in the air and temperatures climbing into the mid 70’s are a sure sign of spring, we’re there. Our seasonal staff

members are being brought on board, and we’re busy again with routine maintenance practices.

We’re still in the patience phase of waiting for full green up of our bermudagrass fairways and approaches, but we’re on our way. Remember the spring transition of our bermudagrass from dormant brown to

green and growing can be slow and erratic. Bermudagrass greens up at various rates throughout the golf course due to traffic wear, shade, and air and soil temperatures. Soil and air temperatures are probably the biggest climatic variables that affect bermudagrass breaking dormancy. Typically bermudagrass doesn’t really get going until mid to late May and requires soil temperatures near 70 degrees and consistently higher nighttime temperatures in the 60 degree range. We’re monitoring areas that are slow to transition and performing cultural practices and fertility applications to help push the turf along.I enjoy hearing from all of you. Please don’t hesitate getting in touch. [email protected]

Wine of the Month:

Whitehall Lane Tre LeoniRed Blend $9.50 GlassThis blend has amazing depth, balance, and big flavors. The nose evokes candied black fruit, red currants, stewed black plums, licorice, and dried sage. On the palate, it bursts with fresh blackberries, crème de cassis, dark chocolate and mixed berry jam. This wine has great texture that ultimately finishes with round, silky smooth tannins.

The lion’s share of the wine is Cabernet Sauvignon with equal. lesser percentages of Merlot, Syrah, and a small amount of Zinfandel.

Thursday Night Live

Maine Lobster 1.5 pound Lobster at Market Price

IN MAY

We will offer each lobster in shell, ask your server if you would prefer out of shell.

Lobstering is done year-round off the coast of Maine by the 6000 plus lobstermen mostly working out of small coastal communities. But is there a lobster season? Is there a best time of year to buy Maine lobster? In general, the best lobsters can be caught before Memorial Day or after Labor Day than anytime in between. But this does not always hold true. Mother Nature does not always cooperate. As any New Englander knows the weather is highly unpredictable. Live lobsters are subject to seasonal changes and government regulations affecting supply and demand.

What is the Best Time of Year to Buy Lobster?Lobster fishing is most active in the Gulf of Maine, Bay of Fundy, Southern Gulf of St. Lawrence and coastal Nova Scotia. Maritime Canada has their own lobster seasons designed to manage and conserve the lobster catch for future generations.

Canada accounts for more than 60% of lobster’s landings in North American and provides more than half of the world’s supply of Lobster. In Canada the lobster season typically peaks twice a year, once in the spring (April-June) and another in December. Canadian provinces have been split into 41 individual Lobster Fishing Areas (LFAs). Each area is subject to its own season, ranging from eight weeks to eight months in length. The breaks in fishing times are timed with the molting period of the lobsters. The largest Canadian lobster catches are in areas 33 and 34 with the biggest haul generally coming in the month of November.

Lobsters are less active as water temperature drops. When water temperature are very cold (January through March), there is not too much lobster fishing going on. Cold weather, wind and rough seas make lobstering difficult. There are a few brave souls braving the elements. The quality of lobsters picks up again in May and June, just before molting, when the lobsters have more meat.

TENNIS —by Pam Cloer Courts Do Not Open Until 9am.Please do not plan on playing before 9amOur staff needs time to prepare courts for playClay and Hard Courts must be cleared of leaves and branches, rolled, brushed and lined and new water in the coolers. If someone is on the court this cannot be done properly.

Please also remember to wear proper tennis shoes. This issue is first for safety, but also to prevent court damage. No hiking boots, sandals, or running shoes and a proper tennis shoe should have a flat sole.

Running shoes and hiking boots have edges and knobs that can catch on the court causing a fall and injury. Improper shoes also leave dents and deep imprints on clay courts and black marks on hard courts all that require more maintenance and repair.

Membership —by Beth EdwardsIt is with a heavy heart that I share this news with you all. I have accepted the Director of Membership and Marketing position with Asheville

Independent Restaurant Association and start May 14. As many of you know, I live near Black Mountain and have made this commute for 7.5 years. It’s time that I be closer to my middle school aged son for his activities and our family life. Please know that my relationship with each of you, as well as the amazing colleagues I get to call coworkers made this decision extremely difficult. I will miss HCC, Anthony and each of you. Take care and know I’m leaving you in good hands!

Here are some helpful deadlines and dates for membership this spring. Please remember it can take anywhere from 30 - 60 days for an application (Nominee Profile and 3 Sponsor Forms) to be presented to the board for consideration.

Get your family, tent and sleeping bags ready to experience the Hendersonville Country Club golf course like you’ve never experienced it- all night long! The Club will have a limited number of “campsites” available for this sleepover behind #4 green and to the left and right of #5 tee. It will start with a hotdog/hamburger cookout, then we’ll provide marshmallows to roast on our campfire, watch a movie on our giant screen, then, in the morning, wake up to coffee, juice and a breakfast casserole, break down your tents and go home for some sleep. Maximum 2 guests per membership family. No pets, please.
