From My DeskIan Scandrett

Folks,In the State election Premier

Berejiklian, through the localcandidate Nathaniel Smith, committed to fundStage 1 of the Rail-Side Trail Loop Line Projectwithin 12 months of being elected. The NSWRail Museum at Thirlmere, who have the Crownlease on the loop line all the way to Mittagong, will deliver and manage the $5.5m project toget the rail line usable from Buxton to Colo Valefor the Museum’s Heritage Trains to use.Council has no role to play, which is appropriateas it had no interest in the proposal.

The branch line from Picton into Thirlmerewill be electrified so as to allow groups to travelon the metro train network direct to Thirlmere, which will be great for primary schools andother groups who want to see our fantastic railhistory.

As you know, this has been a six year projectof advocacy for me and I am delighted at thisoutcome.

Nathaniel’s announcement was very popularand will drive small business and communityopportunities along the loop line. In Colo Valethis could mean tea rooms in the old stationand of course there will eventually be bike hire, nature walks, B&Bs and coffee shops along theway. And going thru the famous Hill Top railwaycutting will certainly be a highlight for visitors.

I am working on Stage 2 already, which isfrom Colo Vale to Mittagong. It will take timebut we are under way!

Always happy to be contacted and lookforward to your emails.

BODHI TODD

COLO VALE NEWS 3

When just 14 years of ageBodhi took up an interest inphotography with an onlinecourse. He started takingphotos of animals in theHighlands and oceanscenes, and found himself engrossed in afantastic world of nature. So talented had hebecome that in 2016 as a Bowral HighSchool student he won 1st prize for his“Colo Vale Waterfall” photo in aPhotography Competition “Go Wild” run bythe Wingecarribee Council, as part of WorldEnvironment Week.

He has since gone on to the WollongongUniversity to undertake a 3 year Bachelor ofArts Degree majoring in Photography andDigital & Social Media. Forthose of you who under-stand the finer points, heuses a Canon 5D Mark 3camera with various lensesand likes to take his photosin “raw” mode.

His love of the ocean hastaken him away on manyadventurous photo sessions, capturing waves colliding, crests, pipelines, duck-diving surfers and algae atthe beach by night (bioluminescent). Hisphotos are usually taken whilst in the waterdressed only in his wetsuit and flippers, nolife vest, supporting himself and his camerafor hours waiting for that perfect moment.

Other times he is taking photos ofHighland Cows at a well known property inChurch Avenue. The Colo Vale CommunityHall has one of Bodhi’s prints of a striking“Highland Cow” hanging on the wall, quitea “bullish” pose.

He has picked up some vital tips fromWarren Keelan, an multi-international award

winning seascape and ocean photographerfrom Wollongong, who has mentored Bodhion various outings together.

Bodhi has come a long way since schooland at just 19 his cow photo is now the frontcover in the April/May 2019 edition of TheSouthern Highlands Magazine .

He hopes to obtain employment withinhis chosen field and is undertaking workexperience with wedding photographers tofurther his knowledge in the art.

He is pleased that his sister Lara, in highschool, is taking an interest in photographyand has been asking questions.

His 2019 calendars had an “Ocean”theme, and for 2020 he is selling “Cow”Calendars, with prints also available.

He would like to tutor anyone who isinterested in photography.

COLO VALE NEWS4

Every few years there is another food fad.Twenty years ago it was garden fresh herbs, that died out, then it was Kale, Cous Cousand ancient grains. Now the TV chefs take a spoon or back of a knife to half aPomegranate to knock out the redgelatinous flesh covering around the seedsover salads or desserts and it looks attractiveand dramatic. Whereby cutting off the topand making a few cuts to the base, fold theskin like the petals of a flower then it is easyto scoop out the flesh which is red andsweet, the white or yellow pith is bitter.

Propagate Pomegranates by seed or takerooted suckers from an established plantthat has quality fruit, as seed does notproduce plants true to the parent. Use 6-8seedlings and cull weak or spindly plants asthey grow. Fruit would be available from afruit shop or supermarket in autumn, pickingthe best colour and fruit of good size toextract the seed. Plant seeds 10mm deep ina pot of seed raising mix, cover with a pieceof glass or clear plastic until germination, putinto small pots when 100mm tall, replant into6” to 8” pots and grow until 600mm tall.

These plants have beautiful red flowersand glossy leaves and bare an orange todeep red fruit the size of a navel orange. They grow to 6m-8m tall and if kept to asingle stem will produce over 100kg of fruitper year when mature. Remember toremove the suckers when they appear andto use a nitrogen rich complete fertilizeronce or twice a year for abundant healthyfruit.

Happy gardening everyone, ‘til next time.George.

March was a hectic time at the Colo ValeMemorial Hall.

It began with Market Day on March 2nd,the Computer Class on the 6th, the MonsterGarage Sale on the 16th, the State Electionsthe 23rd, the Abbey visitors the 28th, and onthe 29th a commercial was filmed.

The Colo Vale Community Associationoperated the BBQ on a few of these dates, and on Election Day it was so busy that allthe food was sold by 1:00pm.

Samantha Huer had her “Feed theFarms” Cake Stall there for the Elections tooand was pleased with the cake sales.

On Friday, March 29th, Lottoland hiredthe hall to make a commercial about awoman who had won the lottery and invitedher family to the hall to advise them of herdecision to give them $1million each. Didyou see the commercial on TV?

Aaron Schereck, the gent in charge ofmaking the commercial, who lives in Bowralwith his family, remembered the hall from hischildhood and commented it looked a lotbetter now than he recalled. He admittedthat he should have filmed the wholecommercial there including the inside shotsinstead of hiring a studio in Sydney.

Among the people asked to join in thecommercial, to their surprise, were localsJohn Stead (VP of the CVCA) and SteveClark (Men’s Shed Co-Ordinator) whoadded to the family group.

CAMERON’S GARDENWritten & Illustrated by Kathleen Willard

Have you noticed your dishwasher is alittle smelly lately? Food scraps, gunk anddetergent scum combine in your dishwasherto create a breeding ground for germs, bacteria and horrible odours.

We’re all guilty of it. You finish dinner, givethe plates a light rinse then into thedishwasher, letting it do the dirty work.

This all natural dishwasher cleaningmethod with vinegar will banish thoseodours in a jiff and make your dishwasherlook and smell like new.

Get the bottom rack out and make surethat any bigger food items or gunk aren’tstuck in the drain.

Fill a container with a cup of whitevinegar and place it on the top rack of yourempty dishwasher.

Run a hot cycle. Stop it mid-cycle for 15minutes or so to let the vinegar mix soak anddo its job of breaking down residue anddetergent build-up.

Dishwasher still smelly after the cycle?Sprinkle some Bi-Carb Soda on the baseand run another cycle.

Give the inside and outside of thedishwasher a wipe down with a microfibercloth and an equal parts of vinegar andwater mixed in a spray bottle.
