Commodore’s Comments It is May and the end of the "winter season." As we say good-bye to the snowbirds until fall, we welcome summer members. I am also glad to report that our Membership Committee, under the chairmanship of Tammy Carper, has presented many new regular and summer members. Please join me in giving them a big welcome to our Club. If you are a new member or just

wondering how to get more involved in your Club, think about joining the entertainment committee. Contact Marlene Haviland by email at: [email protected] or give her a call at 770-329-3531. May is packed full of wonderful events and opportunities to enjoy the culinary talents of Chef Josh. It starts with the Derby Party, thefirstSaturdayofMay,theeveningoftheKentuckyDerby. You may even get to bet on your favorite horse. Find out more about this great evening of fun and dancing to the Rockin Rogues in the program/menu in this issue.

This month also features Mothers Day on May 12. Chef Josh has a great brunch planned for the family’s enjoyment and to give Mom a break. This brunch historically has been a sell out so make your reservations early. Memorial Day weekend is one of the most traditional events at the VYC that began several years ago. It starts on Friday evening and continues through Monday. What makes this a long-standing tradition are the three events on Sunday, May 26. It starts with the Wreath Ceremony which is a great opportunity for VYC members with boats to go out into the GulfofMexico to layawreathofflowers inhonorof thosemembers that have passed away over the last year. The Blessing of the Fleet follows. It has been a tradition from the early years of the Club. Members with boats will line up and proceed past the docks by the Tiki to have their boats blessed by Rev. Chris Gray. The Retreat Ceremony follows Club traditions at the Flagpole. More details can be found in the center spread. Please have a read and plan to attend.Roger Haviland, Commodore

Manager's Column The month of May brings two important topics to review: dress code andrealtor/brokerbenefit. The dress code is located in the House rules section of your membership roster. For lunch, year-round, shorts are acceptable as casual yacht club attire. In the Main Dining Room, casual yacht club attire with shorts is permitted. Saturday night long pants and jackets are preferred.

After 5:00 p.m. collared shirts are preferred for the gentleman. In Pearson's Cove and lounge after 5:00 p.m., collared shirts are preferred for the gentleman. Bare feet and tank tops are not permitted in the Club at any time. Shirts are always required. Gentlemen's hats should never be worn inside the Club. Tiki: All day and year-round, bathing attire is permitted. Shoes are always recommended. Information about the Realtor / Boat Broker Benefit islocated in the Bylaws section of your Membership Roster. There is a special bonus to those people who have purchased a home or water vessel from an authorized realtor or boat broker who also is a current member of the Venice Yacht Club. They can enjoy thebenefitsof2-month trialmembershipwithout initiationormonthly dues until converted to a year-round member. Let’s share the fun and excitement with others at VYC.Bruce Furman, CCMGeneral Manager

VYC Sneaker Drive for The Twig because

“Every child deserves to have shoes that fit”

We are now collecting new sneakers for infants thru teens in Venice. If every member bought

one pair of shoes, it would be a significant contribution.

The Twig is a nonprofit organization in Venice that provides clothes and shoes to children in Foster Care. They hand out over 200 pairs of shoes in a month. If you are not comfortable buying children’s shoes but would still like to help, you can make a donation to The Twig.

Thank you for making a difference!!Any questions, please contact

Cheryl Pickels Hall at 941 275-5519.

Message from the Fleet Captain Sail In a very interesting article in "Boat US Magazine," Dr. Wallace Nichols, a marine biologist, uses the term "blue space." It is similar to "green space," areas in cities that have trees, plants and green landscaping to get us in tune with nature. Dr. Nichol’s research on "blue space," includes intracoastal

waterways, bays, lakes, rivers, oceans, swimming pools and even fountains. It shows that the "blue mind" lessens the stresses of the day and gives us a break from our overstimulated lives". Boating makes you healthier. Neuro-scientists have found when looking at water, we experience slower breathing, reduced heart rate and lower skin temperature. Cortisol levels, the stress hormone, and cytokines, chemicals that elicit the inflammatory response, decrease and this "can trigger feelings of wellness, compassion, empathy and happiness." We really do feel better when we are on the water. Dr. Nichols states that "the relationship of a boat to our emotional health has been largely overlooked, until recently….there is a research project in the works that will more precisely measure the physical and psychological benefits of ablue mind." Being on the water, or even hearing the sound of water, adds feelings of wellness and emotional benefits.Boatingmakesushealthier. In other matters, it takes a team of personnel to facilitate a successful regatta. Thanks to the many individuals who helped with last month’s Shark’s Tooth Regatta. Some sailboats and crews travel long distances to compete, and it is rewarding for everyone when things are organized and function smoothly. The upcoming annual Blessing of the Fleet is on Memorial Day weekend. In a long-standing tradition at theVYC,theboatsinthefleetreceivetheBlessingofSafe Passage from the Fleet Chaplain. I strongly urge you to participate in this on the water function and support this meaningful annual tradition.Bob Eppinger, Fleet Captain Sail

Message from the Fleet Captain Power We are in the heart of cruise season: The cruise to Tween Waters / Captiva Yacht Club from May 17 to 19 will be led by Commodore Roger Haviland and Marlene ([email protected]). They expect this cruise to be full at about 12 boats. Maria and I ([email protected]) are leading a Fleet Swap to the St

Petersburg Yacht Club, June 21 to 23. There is still space available for both cruises but book now to be certain of a spot. These locations are great for boaters and land cruisers. Freestyle Cruisers - We have no formal cruise schedule for July and August. However, there are plenty of boaters around and we encourage you to venture out and drag a few friends with you. Then in September will be headed to Longboat Key Club Moorings. Memorial Day Weekend plans include a Saturday Fishing Derby with Water Slide. Sunday starts with the Wreath Ceremony followed by the Blessing of the Fleet and the Retreat Ceremony. The Club is also hosting a Sunday Night Shrimp Festival with live entertainment by "The Cryin' Shames." Monday’s Cookout will be a blast for all with plenty of games and entertainment by DJ Joe Farren. Vince Pelliccia, Fleet Captain Power

Venice Police Captain Michael Rose will address the important issue of personal safety for women. A member of this community since 1972, when his family relocated to Venice from Illinois. Captain Rose graduated from Venice High School in 1983. After attending Troy State University, he graduated from the Law Enforcement Academy at then-Sarasota County Technical Institute. Rose joined the Venice Police Department in 1989. He was recognized as Officer of the Year in 1991 for saving a drowning man. He became a detective in 1993 and served in that capacity for 10 years. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2005 and to Lieutenant the following year. In February 2016, he was promoted to Captain, overseeing and responsible for Patrol Services.

★ ★ Just for Kids Fishing Contest ★ ★ There will be an "Off The Docks" Fishing Contest for children and grandkids under 14 years old. Each child should bring a pole, lure and favorite bait. A limited number of fishing rods may be available. Prizes will be awarded! Sign up by Tuesday, May 21. Registration forms are available at the Dockmaster’s Office, the Club reception desk, and on the VYC website. Email them back to [email protected] or return them to the Fleet Captains’ mailbox in the Club administrative office. Any child not accompanied by an adult must wear a life jacket! Once fishing is done, join the party with a water slide.

★ ★ Sunday Wreath Ceremony and Blessing of the Fleet ★ ★ Please join fellow VYC members by participating on the water in these meaningful ceremonies. The Wreath Ceremony takes place just West of the jetties as all boats move into a “V” formation. A VYBA coach boat enters the center of the V with a memorial wreath. Then a tribute is given over VHF Channel 68 to each departed VYC member. Finally the wreath is placed in the water in a very moving and beautiful tradition. Additional boats join the returning boats and stage for the Blessing of the Fleet. In this longstanding tradition, our fleet receives a blessing for “safe passage” from our Fleet Chaplain. Dress code for Flag Officers and Directors is

the VYC “summer uniform”. All others aboard ship wear all white attire. Registration forms for boaters are available at the Dockmaster’s Office, the Club reception desk, and on the VYC website. Email them back to [email protected] or return them to the Fleet Captains’ mailbox in the Club administrative office by May 18.

★ ★ Sunday Retreat Ceremony ★ ★ This event is a formal act of rememberance for VYC members who passed away during the last year. The cannon will be fired, and a uniformed detail of Bridge Officers and members will witness the reading of the names by the Fleet Chaplain. After each name is read, the bell tolls in memoriam.

Announcing a VYBA Burgee! Now in our 67th year,

the Venice Youth Boating Association has a burgee. It was designed by the racing team’s sailors with guidance from Tara

Foster, the Sailing Director. The sailors wanted to stay true to VYBA’s colors of red, white, and blue, the same colors as the VYC. They incorporated what they saw as the "red diamond" in the VYC’s burgee honoring the VYC for starting youth sailing here in January 1952. And the sailors wanted to incorporate the history of VYBA by using its original logo (the 4 letters, "VYBA"). The burgee will fly on the coach boats here and at all the regattas VYBA sailors attend.Summer Beginning and Advanced Sailing Programs Registration for all summer programs is open now, and classes are beginning to fill up! For a complete schedule and tuitions, for either one-week or two-week classes, please visit our website, click on Programs, and then in the drop down menu, click on "2019 Youth Learn to Sail." The link to register children or grandchildren is on that page on our website, www.veniceyouthboating.com. If you desire more information, please contact the VYBA Sailing Director, Tara Foster, by calling her: VYBA phone, 941-468-1719 or by email: [email protected]. On April, 4, at the VYCCF sponsored Jazz Under the Stars; a $5,000 check was awarded to our local Big Brothers Big Sisters. For more than fiftyyears, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast has been igniting hope

and instilling our youth with its vision, "All youth achieve their full potential." This organization has been matching youth in meaningful, enduring, professionally supported mentoring relationships with adult volunteers who defend their potential and help them achieve their best possible futures. BBBS' evidence-based approach is designed to create positive outcomes, including educational success, avoidance of risky behaviors, higheraspirations, greaterconfidenceand improvedrelationships. Just this past year, our Sun Coast BBBS has served over 1,800 youth across a ten-county footprint. Numerous"Big ImpactProgramsThatMakeADifference"exist in our area, and the statistics show success with results in the highest percentiles. For example: the "Reading Bigs," program works with children at risk of failing Florida’s standardized reading tests. It showed 96% of the children maintained or improvedreadingefficiency. In the Big Futures program, 95% of the youth who remain matched with their mentors are either enrolled in higher education or gainfully employed. Other programs include Gateway to Success, Sports Buddies, and Beyond School Walls. We are fortunate to have the thriving BBBS of the Sun Coast organization in our area where many members of our community have time, incentive, and expertise to reach out and change young lives for the better. I think their mission to "build and support one-to-one relationships to ignite the biggest possible future for our youth." is certainly being met and exceeded on a continual basis!
