Danielle Ross was born and raised in southern California. She went to

Arizona State University and fell in love with Russian and Tatar history. She spent her senior year studying Tatar language at Kazan State University in Russia, where she met her future husband. After working in Kazakhstan on a Fulbright Scholarship, she completed her MA and Ph.D. in Central Asian history at University of Wisconsin-Madison. She worked briefly as a social media analyst and specialist in Russian and Central Asian in Tampa, FL before taking a job as a teacher of Islamic and Kazakhstani history at the newly-opened Nazarbayev University, an English-language university in Astana, Kazakhstan. In 2014, she returned to the US to take a job as an assistant professor of Asian history at Utah State University.

When not teaching courses on Islamic history, Dr. Ross returns to Russia and Kazakhstan regularly to research the history of Russia's Muslim minorities, Islamic law, Sufi poetry, and connections between Islamic communities in Central Asia and those in the Middle East. She had published a number of articles on those subjects and has two books forthcoming. In her spare time, Dr. Ross brews homemade beer and works in her vegetable garden with her husband and their daughter. Danielle will be teaching Course 132, Islam in the Modern world this summer.

Katherine Potter was born and raised in Durango,

Colorado, and received my B.S. in geology from Fort Lewis College. Her master’s degree, also in geology, is from Idaho State University, and she earned her Ph.D. in geology at Utah State University. Today, her research projects focus on understanding the rate of volcanism in the Snake River Plain, the origin of Snake River Plain magmas, how the composition of the underlying crust can influence the chemistry and eruptive characteristics of magma, and uplift and incision rates in rivers of the western Snake River Plain. Katherine’s industry experience includes work as an exploration geologist for a mining company in Nevada and Colorado, and work as an exploration geologist for a major oil company in Houston. When she is not teaching or looking at rocks, she enjoys floating down rivers, skiing down mountains, trail running, traveling, knitting, playing guitar, and eating delicious food. Katherine will be teaching Course 148, Rocky Mountain Geology Experience this summer.
