    SISTER FELICIA’S RETIREMENT

Sr. Felicia Gross is retiring after 26 years of serving us here at St. Christopher’s as Director of Religious Education. Sister instituted the Liturgy of the Word for Children at the 9:30am Mass and our Rite of Christian Initiation for Children program. She managed both the babysit-ting co-op and Early Childhood Education Program, both of which ran many years. She has provided Catechetical classes for grades 1 through 6, and coordinated our Junior High School classes. She has trained catechists and teachers for 400 students per year. Sister has made a huge impact on St. Christopher’s Parish. We are so appreciative of her time and here dedication to our parish and our children. Her caring and devotion have shone through all these years. She will always be remembered as the hardworking, committed, and friendly person. She has been an inspiration and model for all of us in her passion for the work of teaching and serving others. We hope Sister will enjoy her retirement and find many fulfilling things to enjoy, but we know she will always find a way to serve others. “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.” (Mother Theresa) Sister Felicia has done just that.

Please join us in celebrating a Mass of Thanksgiving and Farewell for Sr. Felicia on Sunday, June 4th at 12:30pm followed by a luncheon in Healy Hall. Please come and show your gratitude and send her off with well wishes. From Sr. Felicia: “Your presence is important to me, please no personal gifts. If you want to give me some-thing please make a donation to Sisters of St. Francis-with this note: For the Sisters in Tanzania, who work with the lepers. This would please me. "

Volunteer Opportunity: Ladies' Guild needs helpers for Sr. Felicia's Celebration reception on June 4th. Please sign up in advance if you are able to help.

Attention 8th Grade Students and Parents!!

Once again this year the St Christopher’s Over 50’s Club will be offering two $500 scholarships - one to a graduating 8th grade boy and the other to a graduating 8th grade girl who plan to attend a Catholic or Chris-tian High School. Soon your teachers will offer you the opportunity to apply for these scholarships. The application consists of writing a response to three questions and turning the paper in to the designated personnel at the school. A committee comprised of Over 50’s members will read and score each applica-tion and select the recipients. The committee will not have knowledge of the applicants as all papers will be numbered so that the identification of the applicant is kept secret. We encourage you to take the time and apply.

In today's Gospel Jesus tells us that if we love him we will keep his commandments. As noted elsewhere in the New Testament, Jesus taught that there are two (2) basic commandments: to love God above all else and to love one's neighbor as oneself ( assuming, rightfully, that one is not a masochist.). The repetitive question: who is my neighbor? Jesus leaves no doubt in answer to this question. In Mat-thew 25, he speaks of feeding the hungry, giving wa-ter to the thirsty, accepting strangers into our homes, clothing the naked and visiting the sick and impris-oned. The recipients are identified as "my brethren", admonishing us to focus on the "least of my breth-ren". Today, as well as throughout the history of Christian-ity, for the faithful (laity and clergy alike), to consist-ently live out this mandate has been wanting. As so clearly noted by G.K. Chesterton: "Christianity has not been tried and found wanting, it has been found difficult and not tried." We live in precarious times. If one listens to the bel-licose pronouncements about the Korean situation, we might be one the brink of a nuclear event; Con-gress is dealing with the threat to medical security for millions of people, the fiscal fairness of our tax struc-ture, the protection of our physical environment, the welfare of 11 million non-citizens, - - . As one person, I might feel helpless. However, if each parishioner made a point of contacting his/her congressperson, or joining a group sharing one's po-sition, externalizing one's concerns, then we have a village. The love we profess for Jesus demands ex-tending oneself beyond Sunday Mass. As has been noted in this column before, from Vatican Ii, "The Decree of the Apostolate of the Laity" (14): "In loy-alty to their country and in faithful fulfillment of their civic obligations, Catholics should feel them-selves obliged to promote the true common good. Thus they should make the weight of their opinion felt in order that civil authority may act with justice and the legislation may conform to moral precepts and the common good." Yes, being a Christian is difficult. Any comment and input please direct them to: Doug Harper [email protected]
