Dr. Baker, who will be celebrating his lOth anniversary as Cal Poly's chief executive in August, gave the commencement address in 1980. This year he will be discussing ''service to society beyond our self interest.'' Including graduates, parents, faculty, and friends, a crowd of 16,000 is expected to attend the 10 am ceremony in Mustang Stadium. A native of Westminster, Mass., Baker is a registered civil engineer in four states. He has an extensive background in geotechnical engineering. He earned two degrees in civil engineering from the University of Notre Dame, where he was honored as Outstanding Alumnus in Engineering in 1980. His Ph.D. is from the University of New Mexico, where he was also honored with the Engineering Out- standing Alumnus Award in 1983. Before being named Cal Poly president, he was the Chrysler Professor and dean of engineering at the University of Detroit from 1973-76, and then vice president for academic affairs at the Michigan school until 1979. In 1983, Baker was appointed by President Ronald Reagan to the Board for International Food and Agriculture, a board that adminis- ters the Title XII program with the U.S. Agency for International Development, an appointment he held until 1986. In 1985, Baker was appointed by President Reagan to complete a term on the National Science Board, and in 1988 was reappointed by President Reagan to serve an additional six-year term. During the 1989 Spring Com- mencement, degrees will be con- ferred on about 3150 candidates for bachelor's and master's degrees and technical certificates. They include all who either have or will be completing course re- quirements during the 1989 Winter, Spring, or Summer Quarters. Cal Poly Art$alute Gala 'Great Success' "A great success." That's how Cal Poly Arts Administrator Ron Regier described the second an- nual Art$alute. More than $26,000 was raised to benefit quality arts programming designed to serve both Cal Poly and the San Luis Obispo com- munity. The 1989 total was a 50 percent increase over funds raised during the inaugural event in 1988. More than 350 SLO County residents gathered in Chumash Auditorium for an hors d' oeuvres reception and silent auction, din- ner, live auction, and the presen- tation of two major arts awards. Longtime San Luis Obispo arts patrons Arne and Margaret Nybak received the Cal Poly President's Arts Award. The Student Arts Award went to Michelle Frey, an applied art and design graduate. In memoriam The flags on the pole in front of the Adm. Bldg. will be flown at half staff over Memorial Day week- end to honor Cal Poly faculty, staff, and students who died dur- ing the 1988-89 school year, as well as to honor America's war dead. In addition, the flags will fly at half staff on Tuesday, May 30, so students, faculty, and staff will be able to share in this memorial. Including graduates parents faculty and friends a crowd of 16000 is expected to attend the 10 am ceremony in Mustang Stadium

A native of Westminster Mass Baker is a registered civil engineer in four states He has an extensive background in geotechnical engineering

A Du Pont technology expert will be the final speaker in a distinguished scholar lecture series sponsored by the Graphic Comshymunication Department

Efrem Lieber marketing and business development manager for Du Ponts Electronic Imaging Group will explore International Marketing of Technology on Thursday June 1 He will speak at 11 am in Graphic Arts 209

Lieber joined Du Pont as a research engineer in the textile fibers department more than 20 years ago

Pianist Leon Bates will perform June 3

Acclaimed pianist Leon Bates will close the 1988-89 Cal Poly Arts Quintessence Series on Saturday June 3 at 8 pm in the Theatre

Described by the Los Angeles Times as a pianist for all eras Bates has performed at Carnegie Hall Alice Tully Hall and the Kennedy Center among many others

His sheer mastery of his instrushyment has led to invitations to pershyform with many major US symshyphonies as well as orchestras all over the world

Bates began his formal study of music at the age of six on both piano and violin While still young teachers recognized his musical genius and he was groomed for a concert career by the late Irene Beck of the Settleshyment Music School His advance study was under renowned pianist Natalie Hinderas at Temple Unishyversity in Philadelphia

While at Cal Poly he will conshyduct a lecture and demonstration for school-age children at the Theatre at 11 am on Friday June 2 and conduct a master class for piano students

Tickets for the concert are $12 and $10 for adults and $8 and $6

for students and senior citizens They are available at the Theatre Ticket Office between 10 am and 4 pm on weekdays Reservations can be made by calling ext 1421

Jazz Night concert scheduled for June 2

The Opener composed by Bill Holman tenor sax player and Duke Ellington Orchestra member will kickoff Jazz Night 89 at the Theatre on Friday June 2

The evening of jazz standards will feature the University Jazz Band conducted by Graydon Williams of the music faculty Betty Boop cartoons will begin the evening at 730pm with the conshycert following at 8

The Jazz Bands special guest this year will be trombonist Mike Fahn a Los Angeles-based musishycian In addition vocalist Susan Berry will be featured on various numbers

The University Jazz Bands numbers will include new and old arrangements of big band classics

Tickets are $550 for the public and $350 for students and senior citizens They can be purchased at the Theatre Ticket Office and the UU Ticket Office between 10 am and 4 pm on weekdays Tickets are also available at Boo Boo Records in downtown San Luis Obispo

The Pilipino Cultural Exchange will present Panahon Na 1989 its annual banquet and show on Saturday June 3 from 6 pm to 1 am at the South Bay Community Center in Los Osos The theme is Changing Times A Celebration of Filipino Culture

The student group will prepare chicken adobo rice pancit and lumpias Entertainment will inshyclude folk dances skits martial arts demonstrations guest speakers a slide show and a fashion show

Advance-sale tickets are $1350 for students and senior citizens and $15 for adults and may be purchased on campus at the UU Ticket Office or from members of the Pilipino Cultural Exchange A limited number of higher-priced tickets will be available at the door Children six years of age and younger are free

Artist to lecture Artist Susan Stinsmuellen will

present Assemblage Glass and Mixed Media on Wednesday May 31 The lecture in Room 127 of the Dexter Building is set for 4 pm She has been designing leaded and etched glass panels for commercial and residential comshymissions since 1972 She is a former president of the Glass Art Society Her presentation is sponshysored by the Applied Art and Design Department

Two exhibitions on display in Library

There are currently two exhibishytions on display at the Kennedy library

In the main foyer Primitive Masks of the World features works by Jack R Lewis professor emeritus of architecture Most of his hand-crafted masks are copies of those he has seen or photoshygraphed during his travels around the world While most are made of papier-mache some are crafted from clay The primitive masks will be available for viewing through mid-June

Vera Pallamin visiting professor in the School of Architecture is exhibiting geometric compositions that feature bright and saturated colors Pallamin is a professor of architecture at the University of Sao Paulo Brazil Her paintings are of guache ink and paper and are located in the entry foyer of the library They will be on display through the end of Spring Quarter

Havandjian receives NEH summer award

A journalism professor will be studying the French Revolution this summer at an institute supshyported by the National Endowshyment for the Humanities

Dr Nishan R Havandjian head of the Journalism Department will be in New York City to study at The Graduate School and Univershysity Center of The City University of New York middot

A member of the Cal Poly faculshyty since 1980 Havandjian specialshyizes in international mass media with particular emphasis on French print and electronic media

Duffy will serve on overtime wage board

D Jan Duffy professor of business administration has been appointed to the 1989 Overtime Wage Board for 7-80 (Mercantile Industry) by the California Inshydustrial Welfare Commission

At hearings June 8-9 in San Francisco Duffy will be one of five employer representatives who along with five employee represenshytatives will take testimony and make recommendations to the commission concerning current exshyemptions overtime and alternative work weeks in the mercantile industry

Duffy who has taught business and labor law at Cal Poly since 1980 was chairman of the 1984 Minimum Wage Board She is an attorney specializing in labor and employment matters A 1972 honors graduate of Stanford Unishyversity she earned a law degree at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland

Courses for seniors offered for summer

Senior Summer Program a series of courses designed especially for senior citizens will be offered by Extended Extension from June 26 through Sept 1

Each course will last one week and will meet each weekday from 9 to 11 am on the Cal Poly campus The courses have been selected with the interests of retired seniors in mind but are open to summer visitors and community members of all ages

The registration fee for each of the Senior Summer Program courses is $30 with the exception of a mini-course on the Mozart Festival which will cost $10 Class s~e ~s limited and early registrashytion 1s suggested

In the main foyer Primitive Masks of the World features works by Jack R Lewis professor emeritus of architecture Most of his hand-crafted masks are copies of those he has seen or photoshygraphed during his travels around the world While most are made of papier-mache some are crafted from clay The primitive masks will be available for viewing through mid-June

Vera Pallamin visiting professor in the School of Architecture is exhibiting geometric compositions that feature bright and saturated colors Pallamin is a professor of architecture at the University of Sao Paulo Brazil Her paintings are of guache ink and paper and are located in the entry foyer of the library They will be on display through the end of Spring Quarter

A journalism professor will be studying the French Revolution this summer at an institute supshyported by the National Endowshyment for the Humanities

Dr Nishan R Havandjian head of the Journalism Department will be in New York City to study at The Graduate School and Univershysity Center of The City University of New York middot

A member of the Cal Poly faculshyty since 1980 Havandjian specialshyizes in international mass media with particular emphasis on French print and electronic media

Duffy will serve on overtime wage board

D Jan Duffy professor of business administration has been appointed to the 1989 Overtime Wage Board for 7-80 (Mercantile Industry) by the California Inshydustrial Welfare Commission

At hearings June 8-9 in San Francisco Duffy will be one of five employer representatives who along with five employee represenshytatives will take testimony and make recommendations to the commission concerning current exshyemptions overtime and alternative work weeks in the mercantile industry

Duffy who has taught business and labor law at Cal Poly since 1980 was chairman of the 1984 Minimum Wage Board She is an attorney specializing in labor and employment matters A 1972 honors graduate of Stanford Unishyversity she earned a law degree at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland

Senior Summer Program a series of courses designed especially for senior citizens will be offered by Extended Extension from June 26 through Sept 1

Each course will last one week and will meet each weekday from 9 to 11 am on the Cal Poly campus The courses have been selected with the interests of retired seniors in mind but are open to summer visitors and community members of all ages

The registration fee for each of the Senior Summer Program courses is $30 with the exception of a mini-course on the Mozart Festival which will cost $10 Class s~e ~s limited and early registrashytion 1s suggested
