ticket sales, a depressed economy and weather related issues associated with last year’s lineup cancellations. Tim McGraw, Carrie Underwood, Lady Antebellum, Jason Aldean, Halfway To Hazard, Dierks Bentley and Kellie Pickler were scheduled to perform. The upcoming events in Wisconsin and Arizona will not be affected. SSMack/Nashville has signed the band SingleTree to a record contract. The band’s first single will hit radio in late July with an album to follow before the end of the year. Ashley Gorley (“All-American Girl,” “You’re Gonna Miss This,” “Laughed Until We Cried”) has re-signed a long-term publishing agreement with Combustion Music.

Artist News Teams for the 18th Annual City Of Hope Celebrity Softball Challenge at Greer Stadium June 4 have been announced. In the batter’s box for Opry Live will be Carrie Underwood, Chris Cagle, Danielle Peck, Emily West, Luke Bryan, Phil Vassar, Vince Gill, Nan Kelley and Tennessee Titans Kyle Vanden Bosch, Cortland Finnegan, Rob Bironas and Daniel Loper. Taking the field for After MidNite with Blair Garner are Adam Gregory, Chuck Wicks, Hollywood Yates, Jake Owen, James Otoo, Jamey Johnson, Jimmy Wayne, Jo Dee Messina, Joe Nichols, Keith Anderson, Montgomery Gentry, Randy Houser, Sara Evans and Tennessee Titans Donnie Nickey and Brandon Jones. So, apparently the After MidNiters gave up three NFL players for Keith Anderson and Montgomery Gentry. Sounds fair. The Grand Ole Opry has added a second Tuesday Night Opry June 3 at 9:30pm due to overwhelming demand. Scheduled to appear are Carrie Underwood, Montgomery Gentry, Luke Bryan and more. Laura Bryna will record the song “Hometown Heroes” to be used in the advertising campaign of the Air National Guard. The song will be added to her debut album Trying To Be Me. She will also be

WPCV/Lakeland, FL MD/midday host Jeni Taylor discusses her most meaningful songs, albums or concerts:1. Pink Floyd, Division Bell Tour, Rice Stadium, 1994: The last time the original group as a whole toured together. My first time to see them – and probably the last. Musical history at it’s finest!2. Kenny Chesney, Be As You Are: Songs From An Old Blue Chair: A personal and inside look at the soul of our format’s

biggest superstar. It just doesn’t get any better than that.3. Counting Crows/August And Everything After: The song, not the album. It’s a piece of musical genius that’s not easy to find, but if you can, you’ve got a masterpiece in your midst. Of course, the album itself is amazing, too. Just like everything they do.4. Trisha Yearwood/The Song Remembers When: Songwriting at it’s absolute finest, delivered by the most beautiful voice we have in our format.5. Kenny Rogers/Twenty Years Ago: Anyone who is not moved by this song needs to check for a beating heart. Just to think of those who gave their lives for us in Vietnam touches my heart every time, especially considering my Dad served there and lost way too many friends.• A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: U2’s Joshua Tree. I’ve just never gotten into U2’s music at all, although I hold Bono’s humanitarian spirit in the highest regard.• An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: The Beatles.• A song you played or listened to incessantly: Kenny Chesney’s “What I Need To Do.” I could hear it a zillion times and never get tired of it.

Tracy Lawrence, Tracy Byrd and Pat Green will perform together at the inaugural Smith & Nephew Fourth & Goal Classic June 28 in Atlantic City, NJ. The event benefits NFL retirees and their families who are in immediate need. Montage Music Group will host a writer’s night May 29 at the Bluebird Cafe with songwriters Porter Howell

Wynonna Judd will kick off Alaska’s celebration of 50 years of statehood with a performance at Elmendorf Air Force Base June 27. AT&T will stream the concert on the internet and provide video conferencing between Judd and soldiers serving abroad. Emerson Drive, Richie McDonald, Ricky Skaggs, Linda Davis, Rebecca Lynn Howards, Bryan White and Collin Raye are performing at the Songs 4 Worship - Country event at the Ryman June 1. Emily West will begin rotating demos of songs that she has written on her Myspace page every week. The first to make the cut is “Used to This” with Jeremy Lister. The Clark Brothers, Whiskey Falls and Mark Wills are performing at the free CMA After Hours Kick-off Concerts at the Hard Rock Cafe starting at 11:30pm nightly June 5-7, respectively.

Readers Always Write continued from page 1 An award winning major market programmer felt it’s not too much to ask the ACM for a minute or so of airtime to acknowledge the winners. “The free airtime I gave the ACM award show would have run into the tens of thousands of dollars. Let’s see how well they do if radio acts like this show doesn’t exist. I’ll tell you exactly what would happen: viewership would be so tragic the network would cancel and [the ACM] would be out of business. Do the [award show producers] even understand that without Country radio and airplay, they would have no awards show? Radio gets no respect for the overwhelming help we give to keep our industry alive and vibrant.”Another major market PD thought we were too easy on the ACM. “Thirty seconds of recognizing and applauding the radio winners is not too much to ask for,” he said. “In fact, it’s not enough…. Although the way we expose new artists has changed and continues to change, I would venture a guess that 100% of the winners were given their

first and most meaningful exposure on Country radio. To watch radio pushed to the side most of the night is hard to watch. We gave up a lot of air-time over that weekend in conjunction with our Westwood One remotes to help pump the show and give the station an ACM flavor by interviewing mainly new artists.” Finally, RPM Management’s Scott Siman had his own thoughts on other ignored winners. “I was somewhat amused by your comments on the ACM radio winners - it could be worse, you could be a winner in the Vocal Event category. That award hasn’t been aired in years by either show [ACM or CMA.] Of course, the record that won at both organizations this round (Tracy Lawrence’s “Find Out Who Your Friends Are,” with an album cut that features friends Kenny Chesney and Siman client Tim McGraw) doesn’t exist on the charts nor according to Curb or Sony BMG. It only exists between the artists, the fans and radio – which, if I had to choose, would be the best way to exist.” I’ll leave the last issue for Vocal Event trade publications to address. As for CA, we’ll just ask the ACM to support the folks who support you. Is it really that much to ask?

Steve Azar Indianola (Dang/Ride) Azar produced and co-wrote each of the 13-tracks on the album including “I Won’t Let You Lead Me Down,” the first single off the Dang/Ride venture, co-written with Walt Wilkins. Band member Jason Young gets credit on multiple collaborations including “Crowded,” with Trick

Pony’s Ira Dean. Radney Foster lends his talents to “You Don’t Know A Thing,” and “You’re My Life.”

One Flew South Last Of The Good Guys (Decca/Universal) This trio comprised of Eddie Bush, Royal Reed and Chris Roberts called on songwriter Marcus Hummon (“Bless The Broken Road”) to produce and co-write their debut album. The band also enlisted celebrated writer J.D. Souther (Eagles’ “Best Of My Love” and “Heartache Tonight”) for

several songs. Tracks include “My Kind Of Beautiful,” “Sara,” “Makin’ It Rain” and “Too Old To Die Young.”

“I was at LAX the other day. I looked to my left and saw Aerosmith’s Joe Perry. There was a hall-way coming up on the right. When we got there, I pointed down the hallway and said, ‘Hey Joe! Walk this way.’ He smiled.” — Bob Mitchell, Smith Music Group
