Registration Information

Welcome to the third-annual SwansonFest!

This fun-filled day will celebrate the unique skills, talents, and

cultures that make our school community a great place to learn

and grow.

During SwansonFest, students will participate in five enrichment

classes of their choice (with the exception of Kindergarten

students, who will participate in pre-selected enrichment sessions

within their own wing). All students will also participate in a picnic

lunch. Online registration information will be sent home on Monday, May

9th and must be completed by Friday, May 13th. EVERY STUDENT

MUST REGISTER! Class sizes are limited; registration for all classes is

first-come, first-served. Other important info: ●Please ensure that your student is dressed appropriately for

outdoor and/or athletic activities (sneakers or closed-toe sandals

are a must!). All students will receive a complimentary

SwansonFest t-shirt on the day of the event; please indicate your

child’s t-shirt size when registering. ●Students can purchase a picnic-style hot lunch or are welcome

to bring cold lunch. More information can be found at the end of

this booklet. ●If your student has any allergies or medical concerns that may

limit his/her participation in any SwansonFest class, or if they will be

absent for all or part of the day on May 27th, please indicate that

when registering.

2016 SwansonFest Enrichment Classes

ALL GRADES

Art of Origami – Learn origami with Ms. Delores from The Learning

Shop! How did origami begin? Create your favorite origami

character and participate in the hopping frog race.

The Baseball Experience – Team up with Mr. Wolosek (Riana and

Jack’s dad) to participate in various baseball games and

activities, both indoors and out. Learn about this great sport and

experience why it’s considered America’s Pastime!

Basketball – Practice basketball fundamentals with former BCHS

Boys Varsity Basketball Coach Adams (A.J. Harwood’s

grandfather) and some current BC basketball players. This class will

cover dribbling, ball handling and shooting, plus you’ll play small

competitive games involving different skills.

Be Safe Around Dogs – Get a dogs-eye view of the world with Mrs.

Postotnik from the Elmbrook Humane Society! Learn about the

ways dogs learn and communicate, and the appropriate way to

approach, interact with, and train a dog. The class will conclude

with a visit from some of EBHS’ certified Therapy Dogs! 9:00 & 10:00

SESSIONS ONLY

Cake Pops – Let's make cake pops! You’ll have so much fun

learning the steps and making decorative and delicious creations-

on-a-stick with Mrs. Petersen (Elijah’s mom).

Cartoon Drawing – Are you a fan of Finding Nemo, The Little

Mermaid, or SpongeBob? Mr. Eisenhower of Young Rembrandts

will show you how to have a blast learning how to draw silly sea

creatures and create your own fun cartoons!

Chess Master - Play chess with USCF-Certified Chess Coach Dr.

Zaiser (Aramis’ dad)! Students of all skill levels with an interest in

the game are encouraged to drop in to play some chess and

learn more about this royal game.

Chinese Dragon Boat Festival - Curious about Chinese culture?

Join Mrs. Xu (Cathy Zhang's mom) and Mrs. Hsieh (Amber's mom)

to learn fascinating facts about the ancient Chinese Dragon Boat

Festival, and make a beautiful paper Dragon Boat ornament you

can take home with you! You'll learn a few Chinese words and

enjoy some traditional Chinese music, too. AFTERNOON ONLY

Cookie Bakers – Bake up some fun in this class led by ELL teacher

Mrs. Rebholz! Read a book about how to make cookies, then

measure and mix ingredients for chocolate chip cookies. Bake the

cookies and then sample your work!

Creative Journaling - Journaling isn't just writing what you did

yesterday! Let Mrs. Beug-Hoffman (Sean’s mom) show you how

journals can be a great tool for self-exploration and freedom of

expression. Create your own totally unique journals and decorate

them to make beautiful works of art. AFTERNOON ONLY

Design Can Change the World - Learn how design has shaped the

world around you with Mr. Fuchs (Audrey Ivey’s dad). Explore

drawing, art history, and real world examples of design's influence.

Learn the skills needed to be a designer and why collaboration is

the best way to change the world. 10:00 SESSION ONLY

Drumming – Feel the beat while you make drum mallets and play

fun drumming games with Dr. King (Bobby & Jackson’s mom).

Learn how rhythm exists in our bodies – in our hearts and breath –

and how drumming allows you to set your own rhythm and

change your energy to be calm and alert.

Edible Landfill - Be a “landfill engineer” with Mr. Delwiche (Anna’s

dad)! You'll build your own landfill, learning the function of each

layer and how it helps protect the environment as garbage

decomposes. You'll use edible materials, and once the landfill

passes a final inspection, you'll get to eat your work! All edible

items will be peanut-free.

Fondue It Yourself – Enjoy some cheesy, chocolatey, ooey-gooey

goodness from the fondue pros at The Melting Pot! Learn to make

cheese fondue dipped with apples, bread and veggies, or a

delicious chocolate fondue dipped with fruits, brownies and

marshmallows! 10:00, 11:00, 1:00 & 2:00 SESSIONS ONLY

Gardening - Learn about the growth cycle of plants and discover

different kinds of edible plants and herbs with Mrs. Plier (Lilly’s

mom). All participants will have the opportunity to plant a seed in

an eggshell to bring home with them - then watch it grow! Health and Biomedicine – Explore different biomedical and health-

related topics with members of Brookfield Central's HOSA club.

Interactive stations with fun games will teach you about health

and medicine, and spark interest in some fascinating careers!

Hooked on Fishing – Get hooked on fishing with PE teacher Mr.

Dave! Come learn the basics of a great outdoor activity,

including fish habitat, fish identification of the Midwest, and

casting techniques.

Korean Lucky Bags – Are you feeling lucky? In Korea, families

celebrate the New Year by giving children who show respect to

their elders a colorful paper bag for holding gifts of pocket money.

Ancestors believed these “Lucky Bags” kept away misfortune and

brought good luck. Learn how to make your own Lucky Bag with

Mr. & Mrs. Kim (David's mom and dad) and Mrs. Song (David's

aunt). 10:00 & 11:00 SESSIONS ONLY

Martial Arts –“Kick it” with Mr. Mealy and Karate America

instructors as they teach you a little bit about Martial Arts. Learn

moves that will make you feel stronger and achieve focus. Have a

lot of fun and learn how to make your family, teachers and

community proud!

Math Games with Nepali Elephants - Want to learn about the

beautiful country of Nepal? Mr. Subedi (Eureka's Dad) will share

Nepali music and elephant videos, and show you how to make

your own curvy letters from the Nepali alphabet. Then, he'll amaze

you with tricky math games from his days as a math teacher in

Nepal. 9:00, 10:00, 11:00 & 1:00 SESSIONS ONLY

Meditation - Did you know that meditation is a powerful way to

soothe the mind, improve concentration and memory, and

increase creativity? Come learn how to meditate with Mr. Parakh

(Aarav’s dad), using simple Sahaja Yoga techniques.

Mixed-By-Me Putty – Join Ms. Mary from The Learning Express to

learn about the amazingly shapeable, totally squeezable Crazy

Aaron’s Thinking Putty®, then mix your own stress-relieving, hand-

exercising, mind-expanding, totally fun and addicting putty to

take home with you! AFTERNOON ONLY

Up and Running - Come dressed, come ready, and come with a

smile as you run with 2nd grade teachers Mrs. Leis and Mrs. Buban!

Learn about warm-ups, cool downs, and of course, have a

chance to run a short distance. We are ready to have fun, and to

challenge yourself to make your body even healthier! MORNING

ONLY

Rhythms Of Brazil - Brazil is home to unique rhythms and styles that

influence popular music worldwide. Join musician, composer and

music producer Mr. Negrao (Julia Cracco Santos' dad) to learn

more about samba, bossa nova and other Brazilian rhythms and

music! 9:00 and 2:00 SESSIONS ONLY

Running – Stretch, run, and have fun with Mrs. Griese (Zack &

Xavier's mom) and Mrs. Keup (Josef & Kiley's mom)! Play some

running games and learn about local runs and running programs

that are great for kids.

Sign Language – Do you know which languages are the top three

most widely-used in the Unites States? English, Spanish and

American Sign Language (ASL)! Join Mrs. DePons (Elliot &

Madelyn's Mom) to learn some signs, spell your name, and play a

fun signing game.

Smoothies – What is a smoothie? Join 3rd grade assistant Mrs.

Benslimane (Sabirah & Sariya's mom) to learn about nutrition and

what makes a good, healthy smoothie. Help prepare - and then

sample - different types of delicious, refreshing smoothies! A dairy-

free option will be available. 10:00, 1:00, & 2:00 SESSIONS ONLY

Spanish Fiesta - Just by learning a little Spanish, YOU could make

400 million amigos - that's how many people speak Spanish

worldwide! Join 1st grade assistant Mrs. Dorn (Mason's mom) to

learn about Spanish and Mexican culture, the Spanish alphabet

and basic phrases, plus the many Spanish words you already

know!

Sun Catchers - Do you like crafts? Want to make something fun for

your room or your garden? Sign up with Art Teachers Mrs. Wu and

Ms. Jacobsen to make a sun catcher using recycled material,

wires, and beads!

Swanson’s Biggest Cake - Come and learn the basics of baking

and building a cake from Mrs. Peters, owner of O What a Day

Café (and Stanley & Lydia’s mom). By the end of SwansonFest we

will have built a super big cake and everyone can take a piece

home. The cake will be dairy, gluten, egg and nut free. 9:00,

10:00, 11:00, and 1:00 ONLY

Trip to Brazil – Experience the colorful, musical, and vibrant culture

of Brazil with the help of Mrs. Benadiba (Sara's mom)! She will

share the excitement of Brazil's Carnival - the biggest party in the

world - with videos, music and crafts. You'll make a colorful

Carnival mask to take home and enjoy. Viva Brazil! 10:00, 11:00 &

1:00 SESSIONS ONLY

Yoga For Kids – Be a tree, a cobra, and even a volcano as you

learn yoga poses with 1st grade teacher Mrs. Defnet and 3rd grade

teacher Mrs. Krajewski. Learn about moves for relaxation, strength,

and a healthy lifestyle! 10:00, 11:00, & 1:00 SESSIONS ONLY

GRADES 1-2 ONLY

Art in Numbers - Did you know you can make interesting art out of

numbers? Join Mr. Krishnaiah (Anish Gowda’s dad) and learn how

to draw cool things in simple steps that start with writing a number.

You’ll see that art is hiding everywhere! 2:00 SESSION ONLY

Intro to Coding – How do people create games, apps and

websites? Teaching and Learning Specialist Mrs. Bartels (Wesley &

Mason’s mom) will teach you how to code using various iPad apps

and websites. 9:00 AND 10:00 SESSIONS ONLY.

It’s the Law! – Get a head start on your legal career with business

lawyer and former Swanson student Mr. Widule (Levi’s dad) as he

shares insights into this fascinating profession. Why is the law

important? How do laws shape society? Learn about the sources

of our laws and how they impact our daily lives. 9:00 & 10:00

SESSIONS ONLY

Life-Saving Tools – Join the City of Brookfield Fire Department as

they teach you about the tools used by firefighters and

paramedics, and how those tools help people in need. This class

may include a visit from a Brookfield firetruck and/or ambulance.

PLEASE NOTE: An alternate class will be assigned if there is an

emergency during the class time. 10:00 SESSION ONLY

Making a Difference – Join Mrs. Fraley (Lilly’s mom) as you read the

story Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney and plant lupine seeds just

like the main character does. Brainstorm ways to achieve your

goals while making the world a better and more beautiful place.

MORNING SESSIONS ONLY

Movin' & Groovin' - Come move and groove with 1st grade

teachers Mrs. Jentsch, Mrs. Mattes, and Mrs. Stemper! Enjoy some

guided dance, stretching and breathing techniques. 10:00, 11:00,

& 1:00 SESSIONS ONLY

Poms and Smoothies - Do you LOVE to dance with pom poms? Do

you like to drink healthy smoothies? We have the session for you!

Learn a pom routine to a hit song from 2nd grade teachers Mrs.

Hoffe and Mrs. Wolosek (Riana and Jack’s mom) and recharge

your battery after with a healthy and delicious smoothie that you

can recreate at home.

Protect Your Egghead - Team up with Dr. Thomas (Lila’s dad) to

learn about head injury prevention while you design and test a

helmet for your very own ‘egghead.’ Will your egghead remain

intact, or will it meet a rotten end?

Super Structures – Learn about amazing architecture and

engineering with instructors from Mad Science! Discover how

simple shapes like a triangle and arch strengthen and

reinforce buildings. Our science structure challenge: build an

earthquake-proof structure!

Zumba® – Learn to Zumba® with Mrs. Scharfenberg (Audrey’s

mom)! Zumba® is a whole-body aerobic exercise that uses up a

lot of energy through dancing. Have fun and get fit while you

dance to the beat! AFTERNOON ONLY

Basketball Skills & Drills - 'Get your head in the game' as you learn

fun, challenging and unique basketball handling skills and play

some fun, competitive games like Lightning, Around the World,

and Knockout with Kindergarten teachers Mrs. Baumann and Mrs.

Digman (Brooke’s mom)!

BEAST Robotics – Want to meet a real robot? Join the BEAST

Robotics team, composed of students from both Brookfield East

and Central, for this fun-filled robotics class. See the BEAST robot in

action and talk with the team to learn more about the design-

build process and what they enjoy about robotics.

Bridge Building – Enjoy a fun introduction to Civil Engineering with

Mr. Hoffman (Sean Beug-Hoffman's dad) as you learn the basics of

bridge design! Build bridges out of two different types of material

and then test them to see how strong they are. Will your bridge

hold up? MORNING ONLY

Calculating Baseball Stats – Have you ever heard a baseball

announcer or fan talk about the various statistics for each player

and wondered what all those numbers mean? Mr. Schnabl (Ben &

Molly’s dad) will teach you about baseball statistics and how to

calculate them, and lead you in some fun activities to put what

you learn into practice. 9:00, 10:00, 11:00, & 1:00 SESSIONS ONLY

Civil War: Wisconsin Soldier - Join Swanson custodian and Civil War

re-enactor Mr. Schneider and learn about the life of a Wisconsin

soldier circa 1861-1865. Students will learn about the uniforms,

food, and other essential equipment needed for survival in the

field, as well as the responsibilities and hardships faced by soldiers.

PLEASE NOTE: An inoperable Civil War musket will be displayed.

Emergency Response - Have fun learning the hands-on skills and

knowledge of emergency first response with Mr. Kwasny

(Brayden’s dad)! Learn how to calmly assess the safety of the

scene, make decisions and become someone’s hero. Graduates

will get into an ambulance and meet Brookfield Emergency

Response and Fire Teams.

Green Screen Movie Making –Teaching and Learning Specialist

Mrs. Bartels (Wesley & Mason’s mom) will teach you how to

transport yourself anywhere in the world using the magic of green

screen technology! Learn the ins and outs of quick and easy

movie-making using a green screen, background, and the app Do

Ink. 11:00, 1:00 & 2:00 SESSIONS ONLY

Introducing Public Works – Storm sewers and snow plows and street

sweepers – oh my! Join Mr. Hughes, Highway Superintendent for

the City of Brookfield, to learn how the Department of Public Works

keeps our city in good working order, from supplying our drinking

water to maintaining roads to caring for trees. 9:00 AND 10:00

SESSIONS ONLY

Maple Syrup Biology and Math – Join Mr. Dumbauld (Emme’s dad)

and he explains and shows the basics of getting maple sap from

trees and turning it into syrup! Learn why and how sap does what

it does, talk through the math involved in making a batch of

maple syrup, and taste samples of both sap and syrup. MORNING

ONLY

Police Evidence – Learn police evidence techniques with

Waukesha Police Chief Jack (Sean Beug-Hoffman’s uncle)!

Enhance your understanding and appreciation of the police

department’s Criminal Evidence and Forensic Unit (CEFU) through

hands-on activities, and complete a Child Identifier Kit to take

home. MORNING ONLY

Politician for a Day – A career as an elected official is not as easy

as voting yes or no! Explore your ideas for improving Swanson with

Mr. Hekkers (James’ dad) and take on the challenge of selling

your ideas to your constituents. 9:00, 10:00, 11:00 & 1:00 SESSIONS

ONLY

SPUD – Get ready to move with 4th grade teacher Mr. Marinello as

you learn how to play SPUD, a great summertime neighborhood

game. All you need is a playground ball and a sense of fun! In

case of inclement weather, classroom games (Heads Up 7-Up,

Telephone, etc.) will be played during the session instead of SPUD.

Sushi Rolls - Learn how to make your own tasty "Peace Roll" with

Mrs.Olveda (Tyshi's mom) using cooked rice, Nori (seaweed), and

your choice of vegetable, cheese, or deli meat. Eat your creation

with chopsticks at the end! 10:00, 11:00 & 1:00 SESSIONS ONLY

Uke Circle – Explore the ukulele with Mr. Flood of the White House

of Music! Learn to play two or three songs on this fun instrument.

AFTERNOON ONLY

Veterinary Medicine – Learn about dog and cat care, common

procedures pets need, and jobs in veterinary medicine from Mrs.

Yehle (Jamie & Jessica’s mom), a Certified Veterinary Technician

at Elmbrook Veterinary Clinic. PLEASE NOTE: This class will include

an interaction with 1-2 dogs. 10:00 and 11:00 SESSIONS ONLY

Zumba® Kids – Led by district parent and Park & Rec instructor Mrs.

Neylon, this class will feature kid-friendly routines based on original

Zumba® choreography to create the ultimate dance-fitness party

perfect for young Zumba® fans. Jam out to your favorite music

and make fitness fun! MORNING ONLY

GRADES 4-5 ONLY

Construction – Wondering what’s going on in Swanson’s back

parking lot? Mr. Schmidt of CG Schmidt will explain the

construction process and introduce students to opportunities in the

civil engineering and construction fields. You may even get a tour

of Swanson’s new cafeteria in progress! 2:00 SESSION ONLY

Heart Explorers - Explore your heart and circulatory system with Dr.

Rubenstein (Rebecca’s dad). This class features a guided, hands-

on cow heart dissection for each student. Learn about heart

anatomy, physiology, and circulation, hear heart sounds and see

your own heart’s electrical activity on an EKG

(electrocardiogram)! 11:00 and 2:00 SESSIONS ONLY

Sports Broadcaster for a Day - Would you like to learn how to

interview your sports heroes and deliver news stories about their

big games on-camera, on-the-air for thousands of viewers? Mrs.

Sutton (Kate & Will's mom) of WISN Channel 12 will show you how

deliver a sports news story and host an interview, using real

footage from Brewers and Packers games. 10:00, 11:00, 1:00 &

2:00 SESSIONS ONLY

KINDERGARTEN ONLY Each kindergarten class will participate in SwansonFest as a group.

Courses will be selected by the classroom teacher based on time

and availability. Additional courses TBD. African Dance - Back by popular demand, Kindergartners will join

Mr. and Mrs. Nassalang (Ange & Alexi’s parents) of Jam Ak Jam

Afro-Dance Theatre in a session filled with movement and exciting

rhythms.

Eat Right, Be Bright - Join us for fun ways to really get to know your

food! Explore the five food groups and learn why it’s important to

eat all the colors of the rainbow with Ms. Skinner (Brianna’s mom).

You’ll “taste-test” fruits and vegetables and learn how to make

healthier choices when you’re hungry or thirsty. Officer Training - Meet Brookfield Police Chief Tushaus (Mrs.

Hardie’s cousin) and his friend, retired police K9 "Miller." They'll

teach you about safety, share a story, show you a few tricks, and

talk about life as a police officer and police dog.

How to Register for SwansonFest

EVERY STUDENT MUST REGISTER for SwansonFest! Online registration

information will be sent home on Monday, May 9th and must be

completed by Friday, May 13th. Please complete one registration

form per student. The registration form will ask for the following information: ●Student Name ●Teacher/Grade ●Student’s T-Shirt Size ●Lunch Selection ●Enrichment Class Selections (5 selections per student) ●Allergy/Medical Exemption Info ●Absentee Info ●Parent Sign-Off Registration is first-come, first-served, and classes tend to fill

quickly! We are utilizing a new online scheduling system this year;

more details will be sent along with the registration link. Please

note that some classes are limited to certain grade levels only; we

ask that you help your students to make their choices accordingly.

The PTO reserves the right to reschedule students after registration

has been completed due to class cancellation or other

unforeseen circumstances. If you do not complete a registration form, we will select classes

Lunch Information

Students may bring cold lunch or opt to purchase a picnic hot

lunch from food services. The cost of the picnic hot lunch will be

$2.10; if your student does not have a lunch account, please send

in $2.10 (cash or check made payable to ‘Swanson Elementary’)

in an envelope marked “SwansonFest Lunch” by May 13h. The SwansonFest picnic hot lunch menu will be:
