Most Holy Trinity Holy, Holy, Holy

Dear People and Friends of Saint Joseph’s,

Today, as the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Most Blessed Trinity, not only are we proclaiming clearly, boldly and joyfully that we believe in one God who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, but also we are praising and offering great thanksgiving to our Triune God who chooses to come close to us.

In the Book of the Prophet Isaiah, we read of Isaiah’s vi-sion:

I saw the Lord seated on a high and lofty throne, with the train of his garment filling the temple. Seraphim were stationed above; each of them had six wings: with two they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they hovered. One cried out to the other: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts! All the earth is filled with his glory!” At the sound of that cry, the frame of the door shook and the house was filled with smoke. Then I said, “Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips, living among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!”

In this vision, we hear a well-known liturgical phrase praising the Blessed Trinity—“Holy, Holy, Holy”—with angels around the Lord and smoke filling the house. The psalmist speaks of incense visually representing our prayer and praise of God rising up to him – “May my prayer be like incense in your presence, my uplifted hands like the evening sacrifice.” The footnote for this verse from the New American Bible com-ments on incense as literally “‘smoke’ i.e., the fragrant fumes arising from the altar at the burning of sacrificial animals or of aromatic spices; also used in Revelation 5:8 as a symbol of prayer.” Thus, incense not only signifies our prayer, but also our living, thanksgiving offering of ourselves rising up to the Lord.

When we also look at the footnote for the reference to smoke in the passage from Isaiah, we understand the smoke as “reminiscent of the clouds which indicated God’s pres-ence at Mount Sinai (Ex 19:16–19; Dt 4:11) and which filled the tabernacle (Ex 40:34–38) and the Temple (1 Kgs 8:10–11) at their dedication.” Thus, our use of incense not only re-minds us of what we are doing in lifting up our praise and thanks to the Lord, but also alerts us to God drawing close to us. Incense speaks of ENCOUNTER with the LORD.

Here at Saint Joseph’s we are blessed with so many ways that aid us in this Encounter with God – the inspiring, Catholic architecture, the beautiful iconography, the long, rich history of the parish, the excellent music tradition, and the warmth and hospitality of the parishioners. The use of in-cense is one more way to open us up to this Encounter with Almighty God in our liturgical celebrations, and that is why the use of incense is part of the Roman Rite celebration of the Holy Mass.

At the same time, increasingly more persons have breathing challenges due to allergies and/or illness, which are exacerbated when incense is used. TIME TALENT and TREASURE A Way of Life at Saint Joseph’s

Renewal at Saint Joseph’s through Intentional Discipleship

Intentional Discipleship requires a deliberate decision to pursue a deeper conversion (relationship) with Christ through worship, pray-er, service, giving, studying, and discerning. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that the process of conversion and repent-ance was described by Jesus in the parable of the prodigal son, the center of which is the merciful father. The parable reveals the new life — pure, worthy and joyful — of anyone who returns to God and to his family, the Church. Only the heart of Christ who knows the depths of the Father’s love could reveal to us the abyss of his mercy in so simple and beautiful way.

Please consider pursuing God’s love and mercy by participating in one or more of the following:

Daily Mass and the Sacrament of Reconciliation — Experience the gifts of conversion and the healing power of the Sacra-ments of Reconciliation and the Holy Eucharist. Please con-sider attending daily Mass and frequently participating in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Become a Perpetual Adorer — No other sacrament (except the Holy Eucharistic) has greater healing power; through it sins

are purged away, virtues are increased, and the soul is en-riched with an abundance of every spiritual gift.

St. Thomas Aquinas

Sign up for 1 hour a week as a perpetual adorer or a substitute in our Adoration Chapel. Open 24 hours a day, except when Mass is celebrated. To sign up please call the Rectory and ask for Mary Ellen Gardner.

Intercessory Prayer Ministry — Becoming a parish of intentional disciples includes an intercessory prayer team.

Are you being called to join others in opening yourself to the Holy Spirit so that He leads us in prayer?

Do you have a strong desire to pray for God’s will to be mani-fest within our parish?

Do you relate to the image of intercessory prayer as “tilling the soil of the heart of our parish” so as to prepare it to re-ceive the seed of the Gospel?
