PRAYER FOR PEACE END TO WAR AND VIOLENCE

Heavenly Father,

On this Memorial Day, we pray for those who coura-

geously laid down their lives for the cause of freedom. May the example of their sacrifice inspire in us the selfless love of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. HELPING OUT?

In our church gathering area there are several iron panels for photos. It is a wonderful way to share the good things that are going on in the parish. If you think a few of your members would enjoy dis-playing your activities, I am sure you will be well rewarded. Our own parishioners and visitors are often seen thumbing through the panels. If you want to give this a try, please contact Sister Rebecca:

[email protected] or 313-382-1818.

WANT A WONDERFUL

VOLUNTEER MINISTRY?

We have so many families that year after year ask for extra support in helping to “form” their children in the faith. The volunteers who try meet this need are the “after school catechists”. We need help at: 4:15 & 6:00. Children have so many things in their lives that could suggest that they are not loved and precious in the eyes of God and our faith com-munity. Catechists have the opportunity to prove that perception is off track. Being a catechist or a cate-chist aid can be a very fulfilling ministry. Why not think about sharing your faith and helping parents by taking steps to become a catechist. Where to start…. - Pray to the Holy Spirit to guide you

- Contact Sr. Rebecca for an in-terview

- Talk to those who are involved in this ministry

- Have a willingness to take some classes to help prepare you for the ministry

- If starting out teaching seems too much, then ask about becoming a classroom aid. Please contact Sr. Rebecca with questions (313-382-1818).

Youth Ministry Corner Mother’s Day Bake Sale Thank You’s When you are part of CGS Youth Ministry, it seems like there is always someone to thank, and that’s because it takes a village to do Youth Ministry! I love our CGS Parish Village! Thanks to all of you who purchased baked goods and pepperoni rolls last weekend to support our young people and to feed your moms on Mother’s Day. Because of your generosity, our sale earned about $1200! The proceeds will be used for upcoming Youth Ministry events such as next year’s Subiaco Retreat. Thanks also to our fantastic parishioners who donated delicious baked goods for us to sell. We REALLY appreciate you!!! We would also like to thank Sportsman’s Pizzeria on Fort Street in Wyandotte for helping us with the pizza dough. Please patronize them! They are so good to us! And last, but certainly not least, thanks so much to all of our Teen Forum families and young people who spent all morning and afternoon baking (it is a huge job – and I especially appreciate the moms who took time out of their Mother’s Day Weekend to make sure everything came together). June Knights of Columbus Steak Roast The Knights of Columbus have moved their famous steak roasts to Good Shepherd and have asked our Youth Ministry program to host in June. This is a great evening where our youth and families get to serve and spend time with the fantastic people of our parish community. Many helping hands will be needed for serving food, bussing tables, helping to cook steaks, selling baked goods, and washing dishes. We invite all of our parishioners and friends to join in the fun and a delicious steak dinner on Wednesday, June 6

th,

from 4pm to 7:30pm in the CGS Cafeteria. Tickets can be purchased for $12 in the Parish Office and after Mass this weekend and next. Proceeds will help to support our young people who will be attending World Youth Day and

other Youth Ministry endeavors. Would You Like to Sponsor a World Youth Day Pilgrim?

We continue to invite our parishioners to sponsor our youth traveling to World Youth Day, Panama and to have your prayer requests taken with us to be blessed by Pope Francis. How do you do it? It’s easy! Simply choose an envelope from the board and write your name and prayer requests on the “pilgrim footprint” inside. Place the footprint back into the envelope along with the sponsorship donation amount printed on the outside and return the envelope to the Parish Office or offertory basket. Several of the sponsor envelopes have already been taken and returned, and for this we are very grateful. Know that we will be praying for you throughout our time of preparation and at World Youth Day in Panama. When we return, you will be invited to a gathering to see photos and hear stories from our pilgrimage! Teen Forum Calendar at a Glance Teen Forum Meeting (last Sunday gathering for the year) – Sunday, June 3rd, 6:30-8:30pm in the Parish Center. We will be planting the Teen Forum Giving Garden this evening, so please come in your work clothes/shoes and bring some gloves. All high school youth and newly confirmed are welcome. This will be our last Sunday gathering for the school year.

Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity

Happy Trinity Sunday! In today's Gospel, we hear Jesus declare together all three Persons of the Trinity. "Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." When we speak of the Trinity, two different theological words are sometimes used: immanent and economic. The immanent Trinity is the life of the three Persons within themselves, the inner harmonious relationship between Father, Son, and Spirit. We see this in the Gospels when Jesus speaks of his Father and promises to send the Holy Spirit. The term "economic" has its roots in the Greek word oikonomia, roughly meaning "household management." The economic Trinity is our three-Personed God's relationship with creation; it is creation and redemption and ongoing relationship with us. Made in the image and likeness of God, we are called to imitate God's immanence by giving and receiving love with one another in community. However, this is not limited only to those close to us, though that's where love often starts. We also imitate the economy of God when we go out, when we extend our love and care in a life-giving way. "Go therefore ?" Every believer is sent on mission. Every believer is invited to follow Jesus and the Apostles "to the nations," to the margins, to the people who require a little extra reach. This could be a distant relative, the residents of your local homeless shelter or even the forgotten neighbor next door! When we love well, we create something beautiful-a relationship, a holy moment, a foretaste of heaven. This Trinity Sunday, take some time to examine the relationships in your life. How well do you love those nearest to you? How well do you reach out to those farther away? How are you creating something beautiful?

DRIVE LIKE YOUR CHILDREN LIVE HERE

-AN INVITATION

Recently as I drive through neighborhoods, it is not uncommon to see a lawn sign that reads,” Drive Like Your Children Live Here”. It really does make me think.

Then with the recent concerns in our country and local communities I thought, why not have signs that read, “Work and Pray as if your Mother is being deported”, “ Work and Pray as if your Husband is being deported”, “Work and Pray as if one of your children is being deported”.

Today Catholic Relief Services is inviting us to put our faith into action by signing letters that will be delivered to Senators Stabenow and Peters.

There is a regional meeting June 2nd with representatives from Michigan and Ohio. Our signed letters, along with those of several other parishes, will be taken to that meeting. Why not let Good Shepherd respond wholeheartedly?

You are invited to sign a letter at the Howard St. Entrance or in the Gathering area. These will be collected and taken to our diocesan representative to forward to the event. The bishops letter “ Strangers No Longer” is a good stepping stone for understanding this challenge as followers of Jesus.

For more information: Laura Mikota has volunteered to be our parish representative ( 313-382-1818 or 313-318-5813) . God bless you and let us pray for one another as we try to hear God’s call to each of us.

Sister Rebecca

Memorial Day Remembrance

They were three brothers, born just a year apart. They grew up on the edge of a Midwestern city, graduated from high school, and had all of life ahead of them. Then the war

came. Frank, the oldest, the one with the poor eyesight, managed to talk his way into the Air Corps as a technician. He was good with wires at a time when radios were tubes and coils. Fred was in the Army and served on the west coast and then in the Pacific - a place he never even dreamed of seeing when he was in school. John ended up becoming a mechanic in the Air Corps and was shipped out to England and went on to serve at bases in the Netherlands and France. Frank was killed in a storm during a training mission over Kansas. Fred and John returned at the end of the war, married, started families and lived a long life. They, along with other buddies, started a VFW post named after Frank and two other high school friends who had died in service. A year after John died, his son found a trove of letters written by the three brothers to relatives and sent during the war. Letter after letter from each of the brothers always ended with "I hope I'll be seeing you soon"-the constant refrain of a soldier or sailor overseas -"I hope I'll be seeing you soon." Reading all the letters on Memorial Day again was a reminder of how much they had given, even the ones who survived the war and returned home. Their words find an echo today as we honor the fallen who have given their all. In hope and remembrance we can say to them, "I hope I'll be seeing you soon."

IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER..SON…AND HOLY SPIRIT

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. The one God reveals himself to us as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The revelation of God as triune was progressive in nature and not done all at once. However, certain things have always been true of God, no matter how God was understood at the time.

Moses says that the God they worship breaks all of the stereotypes. Alt-hough he is the Creator, he actually cares enough about his people to speak with them. Moses is amazed that God would do this and the people not die as a result of hearing his voice. God also cares enough about them to go into the midst of a nation that had enslaved them, defeat their gods, and bring his peo-ple out. The stereotypical god stayed in his own territory and never ventured out. The God of Israel is Lord of the heavens and the earth. He gives his peo-ple statutes and ordinances but land and long life, too. He wants his children to prosper and is willing to do all in his power to see that this happens.

The psalmist gets fairly specific in this regard. God's kindness fills the earth. The eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him and hope for his kind-ness. He does not disappoint. He wants to deliver them from death and pre-serve them, even in the midst of tragedies such as famine. He is the help and shield of his people. Blessed are the people the Lord has chosen to be his own.

This God goes even further. He considers us his sons and daughters. He gives us his Spirit. We are not treated like slaves but as adopted children who can talk to God like a baby talks to her daddy - Abba, Papa, Dada - Father. Since we are children of God, we are heirs. God has prepared an inheritance for us. And we share this inheritance with Jesus, the actual Son of God.

Therefore, we are commissioned to take this Good News to all nations. We baptize in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit and then we teach them to follow Jesus. This is the least we can do for the God who has done so much for us. Even in this, we are not alone. Jesus promises to be with us.

We may not know or understand everything there is about the triune God but we know that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit in every age and at every time has shown interest in, love for, and a desire to know his people.

Holy God.

Holy Mighty.

Holy Immortal.

Have mercy on us. (by George Butterfield Mt. 28:16-20)

Everyday Stewardship

My wife and I have used the same baptismal gown for all 3 of our children. It is a very long traditional gown made with fabric taken from my wife's first communion dress and my mother-in-law's wedding gown. It is a symbol not just of each child being washed clean by the sacra-ment, but also of family and how faith has been passed down through generations. Faith is a gift and that gown shows how this family has taken seriously the cultivation of that faith and the sharing of it with those we love the most. By our baptism we are called to a discipleship that compels us to share our faith with others. It is not always easy, but it would be wrong to horde that faith and not let it shine for oth-ers to see. When we think about a stewardship way of life, we some-times focus on material goods, our talents and skills, or our time. But faith is a gift that needs to be treated in a similar way. We are heirs with Jesus Christ to this rich tapestry of faith and the Church. If all of us were to hide that faith and not seek to share it with others, that lineage would end with us. We live during a time in history where in some lands people are find-ing Jesus in huge numbers, while in other places the numbers of people in the pews is declining sharply. We can spend all our time talking about these realities or we can choose to respond to our baptismal call. Jesus commanded us to go forth and make disciples of all nations. Maybe we can begin with our neighbor. --Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

Twenty-Four Notes That Tap Deep Emotions The story of America’s most famous bugle call

By Jari Villanueva

In July, 1862, Union General Daniel Butterfield and Brigade Bugler Oliver Willcox Norton revised an earlier bugle call to create the 24 Notes that we use today called TAPS. This quickly spread throughout the Union Army and was soon used by the Confederates to signal the end of the day. Late that same year at a battlefield funeral Union Captain John Tiball, head of a forward artillery battery, ordered it played for a cannoneer killed in action. Not wanting to reveal the position of the battery the captain substituted TAPS for the three rifle volleys fired over the grave.
