“When He had said this, as they were looking on, He was lifted up, and a cloud took Him from their sight.”

- First Reading from the Acts of the Apostles

Happy Feast of the Ascension! Happy Memorial Day weekend! The Feast of the Ascension is the benchmark of the closing of the Easter Season. Memorial Day is the benchmark of the closing of spring and start-up of the summer season.

Spiritually, it might be hard to imagine that our Divine Lord ascended to the heavens 40 days after His resurrection from the grave. What a memory the Messiah left on the hearts of those men as they returned to their daily routine and continued to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ’s death, resurrection and ascension to all who were willing to listen to them.

On this Memorial Day weekend, as we honor the men and women who died serving in our armed forces for the sake of freedom, we pray that they experience their own ascensions, and enjoy the merits of the heavenly kingdom.

One of my most vivid images of my time of study in Italy was visiting a large, U.S. military cemetery, filled with the fallen from World War II. I spent a good deal of time walking past the grave markers. Some of the oldest people there were 28 and 30 years old. Many were in their late teens and early 20’s. As sad as this cemetery was, it was equally beautiful and peaceful. On the back side of the cemetery was a large relief. On the relief (in concrete) was a beautiful artist’s depiction showing a deceased soldier being lifted up in his own ascension to heaven.

Providentially, on May 29th of 2017, Memorial Day, President John Fitzgerald Kennedy would have celebrated a milestone birthday. He too was a soldier and not just a statesman. He too died for his country, which we sometimes forget as he was assassinated on that dreadful day in Dallas, Texas. On this Monday, on Memorial Day 2017, President Kennedy would have turned 100 years old. If President Kennedy would return from the dead and walk the streets of Washington, he might be surprised at how the buildings from the White House to the Capital look amazingly unchanged. But, while the buildings have not changed, the bickering inside of those walls and the partisan politics have only intensified, as Washington seems to be in perpetual, judicial, gridlock.

I have read extensively of President Kennedy and his family, both his strengths and his weaknesses. Yet, I still

have a profound admiration for the man, the soldier and the statesman that he was. In addition to these things, he was an eloquent writer and a genuine scholar, which Washington is presently in very short supply of these days.

One of President Kennedy’s favorite stories (as we celebrate his 100th year from his birth) involved a man named Hubert Lyautey, the French Army general who had served in North Africa. The General once told his gardener at his home that a flowering tree should be planted on the lawn. The gardener told the general that the tree he wanted to have planted would not flower for a hundred years. The General responded that the gardener had best hurry and “plant the tree this afternoon”.

One hundred years later, the legacy of President Kennedy is now blooming. For decades later, what he wrote and the legislation he proposed is holding greater significance than ever. If you will indulge me, I would invite you to ascend to a “higher” time in politics, when we “ascended” beyond name-calling and investigations of fellow politicians and were truly the statesmen, leaders and law-givers that, in recent years, we seem to have largely lost. I would like to close with a few great classic quotes of Kennedy. For some of you, it will bring back great memories on this Memorial Day weekend. Happy Memorial Day!

“Let the word go forth from time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans – born in this century, tempered by war, disciplined by a cold and bitter peace, proud of our ancient heritage – and unwilling to witness or permit the slow undoing of those human rights to which this nation has always been committed, and to which we are committed today.

Now the trumpet summons us again – not as a call to bear arms, though arms we need – not as a call to battle, though embattled we are – but a call to bear the burden of a long twilight struggle, year in and year out, ‘rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation’ – a struggle against the common enemies of man: tyranny, poverty, disease and war itself.

In the long history of the world, only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger. I do not believe that any of us would exchange places with any other people or any other generation. The energy, the faith and the devotion which we bring to this endeavor will light our country and all who serve it – and the glow from that fire can truly light the world.” -President John F. Kennedy

Stewardship Of Gratitude We have been having a very good financial year in

2016-2017. Presently, it appears that we will again conclude our parish resources in the black for the third year in a row if our present giving in these final weeks remains constant. I want to give a shout-out this is of stewardship thanks for making our Vacation Raffle so successful this year! I also want to thank all of you who have already given towards the work of repairing, cleaning and updating our exterior mortar on the church. So far we have taken in $10,808.15. This is 36% of our goal! This is amazing, after making the appeal for only two weeks. As I write this, I have been told that the work will begin later this week. Perhaps by the time that you come to Mass this weekend and read this bulletin, the work will be underway. We anticipate the work to last three weeks if everything goes according to schedule. You are great stewards. Thank you so VERY MUCH!

Stewardship of Gratitude

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

“To live is to change, to be perfect is to have changed often.”

- Cardinal John Henry Newman

Brady Taylor and Samantha Pengilly

are to be married on June 10, 2017,

at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, North Mankato, MN.

Vacation Raffle Results

We had a wonderful crowd for our Vacation Raffle on Monday evening, May 15th. It was the largest attendance I have seen in the past three years. I am pleased that we pastorally returned this event to the springtime of the year, with the Fall Festival being returned as a parish event in the late fall. This year our total (gross) income (before expenses) came to an amazing $13,412.00. Our expenses this year came to a reasonable $5,784.00. Our profit for the Vacation Raffle came to $11,187.37 this year. Last year’s profit for the Vacation Raffle was a much more modest amount at $7,627.34. So, this year, our raffle, with a larger attendance, a sell-out crowd two weeks in advance, revealed itself through our final profit, with an increase from last year by $3,560.03. This is super! Gratitude again goes out to Jim Theuninck, the Vacation Raffle Committee, to our ticket sellers and all who made the event SO SUCCESSFUL. We are ending the fiscal year with a great bang. Thank you for your great generosity through your time, talent and treasure.

We are doing very well on our project to repair and waterproof the exterior brick on our 1950 structure. Can you believe that we are barely two weeks into the promotion of this project and we have already taken in a total of $10,808.15 or 36% of what is needed? Have I convinced you yet at how wonderful Holy Rosary Parish is through their spirit that is revealed in so many ways including their stewardship? On the week of May 7th, an envelope was attached to the bulletin for this Mortar and Maintenance project. If you no longer have the bulletin or the envelope or were gone that weekend, you are welcome to take a plain envelope or simply write in the check memo “Church Maintenance” and we will see that it goes into the right account. Thank you already to those generous souls out there that so generously gave. May God reward you!

2017 Class Pride of Holy Rosary! I want to say a word of

thanks and commendation to the class of 2017 of Holy Rosary Church. Following the Baccalaureate Mass, I heard, as pastor, many favorable comments. I, too, must say that it was one of the nicest Masses of this sort that I have celebrated for some time. The church was full; the students were all beautifully dressed and processed/genuflected with reverence; there was good attention by the young people; and the list goes on. I was proud to present three beautifully blessed crucifixes to those three seniors who faithfully served throughout their senior year, including Holy Week. Those three seniors include Elaine Adams, Jonathan Hull and Shea Westermann. Perhaps most important is that this is one of the finest classes when it comes to the regular participation of the faith. For as pastor, I can say that the majority attend Mass weekly. As I said at the close of Mass, they must now be leaders and not followers if they go onto school or the workforce. There are many who will dismiss the faith. May they be proud to tell them that they are Christian and Catholic. Stay sane and loyal to the Church!

- Father

50 Years of Priestly Service

Our prayers and best wishes go out to Father Andy Olsem, as he celebrates this weekend at, St. John’s parish, 50 years of priestly service. We celebrate, as a Church, his great and holy accomplishment. As pastor, I will be planning to attend the reception and will certainly greet and congratulate him on behalf of Holy Rosary, where Father has helped pastorally on a number of occasions and will be coming this summer again to celebrate the weekend Masses. May God grant Father Andy many more years of health, happiness and, most of all, holiness. Congratulations, Father, on a job well done!

Communal Anointing - Thank You

We had a tremendous response this past Monday for our bi-annual Communal Anointing Mass and potluck supper. We had more than 75 people in attendance, which is the largest attendance folks can remember for some time. This is great. Thank you to those of you who came to pray and receive the sacraments. Thank you to JoAnn Borchert and the Social Concerns Committee who assisted in organizing the event. A

special word of thanks to Lorraine Klaseus who spent a great deal of time contacting our seniors & reminding them to save the date. Please note that our final opportunity to receive the Sacrament of the Sick will be at Oak Terrance on June 21st at 9:15 am. Coffee & Cake will be served following the Mass at the assisted living residence for all who attend.

Save the Date: LoyolaPalooza July 29 On Friday, May 19, we assembled for our High

School Awards Ceremony, and on Sunday evening, May 21, Bishop LeVoir from the Diocese of New Ulm and Marsha Stenzel, Diocese of Winona superintendent of schools joined us in celebrating Graduation.

Preschool students ended their year together with Bike Parades (the children rode their decorated bikes while we all cheered!) then gathered for songs and blessings. On Thursday, K-4 students closed their year together with Wacky Olympics field events, and students at the Fitzgerald building enjoyed Fitz Blitz fun. We dismissed for summer vacation at noon.

Why Loyola? Because we are a family! Everyone, from Kindergarten classmates to Graduates have been keeping Gabe and his kidney transplant team and donor in our prayers.

Because our students have multi-age experiences! This week our concert choir visited our Preschool classes and led the little ones in songs, rhythm activities, and musical games.

Because our students learn in an atmosphere that supports and encourages excellence! Everyone was very quiet as our high school friends took their AP finals.

Did you know? The class of 2017 earned over $1.8 million in scholarships to further their education!

On May 30, our big move to the Hill begins!

Here Comes Summer!

There Goes the Spiritual?!?

Personally, there is perhaps no time of year that I look forward to more than the start of summer. The next three months we will be able to physically enjoy warm weather, a bit less work, a time to travel a little bit, and a time to see family and friends. As a pastor, the start of summer also makes me anxious and nervous as there are many faithful souls out there who have been faithful to come to Mass each week, but, when summer hits, they again convince themselves that the Third Commandment of God is little more than a “suggestion”. The practice of attending Mass can never be replaced by any family or fun activity no matter how important or enjoyable. As you make your summer plans, please make sure that you include the Lord and the reception of Holy Communion! Have a HAPPY and a HOLY summer!
