8 AM WEDNESDAY40 / 100G Field Testing and Demystifying 100G Garden Court 1JDSU, Tim Yount, Market Dev. Manager, Fiber Network TestingThe growing need for bandwidth capacity has fueled the development of the 100G based network. In addition, the globalshift toward the use of OTN client interfaces makes the adoption of stringent test procedures an important consideration. We discuss recent developments in high-speed networking, specifically with respect to core backbone technologies. Weaddress the ongoing 100G wave, how 40G technology is being used as an interim step toward a higher capacity core, andhow test solutions are keeping pace both for provisioning and maintaining these critical networks. We provide a basicoverview of 100Gig technologies, including a guide to understand the differences between client-side and line-side 100Gdeployments. We discuss fiber infrastructure testing considerations on both sides, including the implications of coherentdetection & dual polarization transmission.

LTE Interference on Broadband Cable TV Services Garden Court 2EFFIGIS, Daniel Babeux, VP Business Development, BroadbandSponsored by Telonix CommunicationsIndustry Canada (I.C.) has released a Standard Radio System Plan (SRSP), which outlines the technical requirements forthe operation of Mobile Broadband Services (MBS) in the bands 698-756 MHz and 777-787 MHz I.C., auctioned the 700MHz MBS in January 2014. I.C. expects that most cable operators will eventually transition to all-digital systems. Theupcoming deployment of LTE cellular technology in the 700 MHz band has increased awareness of potential signal ingressand egress impairments between cellular and broadband cable operators. LTE operators will be pressuring cable operatorsto minimize leakage in the LTE band. We review the design of a comprehensive shielding integrity monitoring solution thataddresses both concerns of Aeronautical/LTE band cable leakage impairments. We identify a proposed I.C. frequencyallocation plan for MBS services and potential technical impacts on broadband cable services. We present a shieldingintegrity monitoring strategy based on best engineering practices and show the benefits of maintaining proper shieldingintegrity both on upstream and downstream paths.

The Clear Choice for Voice: The Cloud Outsource Model for Carriers WhitehornALIANZA, Brian Beutler, CEO, President and Co-FounderCloud voice platforms transform the way service providers deploy and manage their VoIP services with a technology solutioneasier to manage, less expensive, and more scalable than traditional infrastructure approaches. This session will focus onthe pros and cons to “cloud-sourcing” voice and financial and strategic benefits to outsourcing voice to the cloud. We covercloud voice platform architectures compared to VoIP networks, carrier requirements for connectivity and rate centercoverage and implementing management tools and back-office integration.

Fiber in Access Networks –The Evolution of FTTx Technologies Garden Court 1JDSU, Tim Yount, Market Dev. Manager, Fiber Network TestingThis session looks at all the flavours of FTTx (including the latest in RFOG), and addresses Next Generation - PassiveOptical Networks (NG-PON). We’ll talk about testing considerations to ensure reliable, low maintenance networks. Thelatest impacts of wireless services on the access network, including the race to expand tower deployments and DistributedAntenna Systems (DAS), and the fiber backhaul required to support these services is also discussed.

Powering Indoor DAS and Small Cell Networks Garden Court 2ALPHA TECHNOLOGIES, Kevin Borders, Director, Product Marketing One of the bigger hurdles in deploying Indoor Distributed Antenna System, (IDAS) networks is how to power the distributedremote nodes. Providers wrestle with where to locate the power system, whether battery backup is required, andimplications of the power system size and shape on aesthetics of the venue. Some service providers avoid placing powersystems and batteries at the node by powering them over copper cable with current supplied by the host power system. We describe how this line powering technique works, how to engineer a site using this approach, and what the pros andcons of this method are. We address requirements for the copper cables connecting the nodes to the host, with emphasison ensuring compliance with the Canadian Electrical Code and CSA.

In Building Antenna Systems – Tools & Tips WhitehornGAP WIRELESS, Marc Landry, Senior Account ManagerOur dependency on mobile devices grows larger every day. Along with this dependency comes the requirement forubiquitous wireless coverage for both voice and data services in the workplace. In Building Distributed Antenna Systemsplay a pivotal role in ensuring that wireless services are delivered where needed the most. This session will provide aninside look at testing and mapping your current in building coverage, along with design considerations, differences betweenactive and passive solutions and final implementation options.

10 AM WEDNESDAYDistributed CMTS in Next Evolution of HFC Networks Garden Court 1POWER & TEL, Pierre Blais, Application EngineerOperators are evaluating their options when it comes to network upgrade to offer high-speed Internet services, VOD andSDV using IP for delivery to the end users. For those looking for a cost effective upgrade of their existing network and want to use much of the existing infrastructure, this evolutionary path leads to deep fiber deployment with fiber nodes serving between 100 and 250 subscribers. Various benefits in moving the CMTS from the head end to deploy it in the field will be reviewed. As operators move todistributed CMTS, benefits will become clear and may ultimately make the future move to fiber-to-the home unnecessary.

10 AM WEDNESDAY CONTINUEDProper Grounding and Bonding – Garden Court 2Testing and Maintenance in Buildings & TowersMEGGER, Ed Rousselot, Datacom Technical SalesGrounding and bonding is a common problem everyone is familiar with. In this session we learn the difference betweenresistance and resistivity. We discuss soil resistivity and how to measure it, ground electrode system components and theirproper installation, ground electrodes, conductors and bars, and bonding connectors., Mechanical, Compression,Exothermic. We explain ways to measure the effectiveness of the ground electrode system by ground testing, three-terminal groundresistance testing and clamp ground resistance testing.

Building & Operating your Private Area Network with “Wireless Fiber” WhitehornALLIANCE CORP., Pat Redmond, Director Broadband SalesDoes your organisation have more than one location within the same industrial park or close by? There is wirelesstechnology that can easily connect your buildings with broadband speeds. With a mast on top of each building, an antennaand a special outdoor broadband wireless router, you can build and operate your own wireless network for a fraction of thecost of a leased line yet with much higher network speeds. Some of these systems are even referred to as “wireless fiber”.This can work for colleges, hospitals, manufacturers or municipalities. We introduce the concept of “wireless fiber” solutionsand installation. Some case studies are reviewed and specific hardware solutions introduced.

Fiber into the SFU and MDU: An Approach to Pre-Termination Garden Court 1SASKTEL, Dan Sullivan, Technical Assistant, Customer ServicesInfrastructure Development and SupportTraditional fiber builds involve fusion splicing and field termination of cabling. SaskTel attempts to forgo this need as muchas possible when installing new fiber technologies to provide services to SFUs and MDUs. To this end, we have standardizedon the use of pre-terminated materials whenever practical. Presently, there is a plethora of vendor-based solutions available. There is no manual as how all the technologies come together among the different groups involved in the design anddeployment processes to address the real world situations encountered during the service installation. This presentationwill study what steps can be taken to ensure these technologies all link together into an efficient and workable solutionthat will provide a positive experience for the customer.

Reimagining Network Testing Garden Court 2FLUKE NETWORKS-DANAHER, David Coffin, Chief Technical OfficerWe need to reimagine how network testing is performed. Whether certifying a copper or fiber cable installation, verifyingWiFi connectivity, testing end-to-end network performance (jitter, latency, loss & throughput) or monitoring applicationresponse time, testing networks is obsolete at worst and insufficient at best. Smartphones are proliferating and cloud-based services are ever-present; these technologies should be used to make network testing easier, more useful, readilyavailable and affordable. Many venerable and flourishing processes and industries have been totally reimagined in thisonline and mobile age. It is happening in network test & measurement too. This session presents how smartphones, newcloud-based services, and an Internet of Things including probes and sensors will completely change how engineers andtechnicians, who are responsible for installing and maintaining networks, will do so tomorrow.

Why Batteries Fail - Backup Battery System Testing & Maintenance Garden Court 2MEGGER, Ed Rousselot, Datacom Technical SalesThe two main battery chemistries used today are lead-acid and nickel-cadmium. Future chemistries include lithium, prevalentin portable battery systems, but not stationary systems. With refinements over the decades, it has become a criticallyimportant back-up power source. Refinements include improved alloys, grid designs, jar and cover materials and improvedjar-to-cover and post seals. Arguably, the most revolutionary development was the valve-regulated development. Many similar improvements in nickel-cadmium chemistry have been developed over the years. We discover best practices on testing battery life, what can bedone to improve battery life and how to track battery health. Is your equipment adequately backed up?

If FTTH is the Future, What Happens Before Then? Garden Court 1CLEARCABLE NETWORKS, Rob McCann, PresidentSubscriber consumption continues to grow at 50% CAGR and the relative near-term future requires a fundamental shift intechnology. Building new greenfield FTTH plant is the same or even more cost-effective than building new HFC, but whatdo we do about brownfield? Changes are necessary in physical plant and overall technology, but the paces of technologyadvancement means careful planning to do just enough to meet the demand without spending capital. This sessionexamines technology options for breathing more life into old plant.
