St. Ann’s Parish Corpus Christi Sunday May 29, 2016

On this great Solemnity of Corpus Christi, it is beneficial for us to refresh our memories as to how to approach the altar to receive Holy Communion.

When we approach for Holy Communion, we are to make a “bow of the head” before receiving Communion. This is more than a mere nod, but doesn’t have to be a full bow from the waist. When the priest or extraordinary minister holds up the Host and says “The Body of Christ” we must respond by saying “Amen.” This is the only approved response. We may not say “Thank you” or anything else. Our “Amen” means, “Yes, I believe this truly is the Body of Christ and not just a piece of bread.” If you choose to receive Communion in your hand, place your hands at the level of your heart, right hand under left (reverse it if you are left handed), making a throne for the Eucharist. Do not place your hands side-by-side or attempt to pluck the Host out of the priest’s hand. When the Host has been placed in your hand, take your right hand and pick up the Host and place it in your mouth. Do NOT lick the Sacred Host out of your hands or suck it up like a vacuum. Feed yourself in the normal way we would eat any other food. Jesus gave us the Eucharist in the form of food, so it is not disrespectful to treat it that way. You must also place the Host in your mouth in full view of the priest, and not walk away with it still in your hand. It is never permissible to bring the Host back to the pew with you. If you choose to receive Holy Communion on your tongue, open your mouth and extend your tongue sufficiently so the priest may place the Host on your tongue. The Host falls to the floor just as frequently from people who don’t open their mouth sufficiently and end up knocking the Host to the floor when they close their mouth as from people receiving in the hand. Once you have received Holy Communion, go back to your pew and pray about the fact that you have just received God - Body, Soul, and Divinity - into your body and what that now means for you: you are now on the cross with Him, dying with Him, buried with Him, and risen in Him with all your sins forgiven! Then join in the Communion hymn thanking the Lord for His tremendous gift of love to us. I notice many people who receive Communion and then head for the door, or pick up the bulletin and start reading it while standing in the back. (If you’re doing this now, gotcha!)

If you give sufficient attention to the fact that you have just taken God Himself, Body, Soul, and Divinity, as your food, I guarantee it will lead to a greater appreciation in your heart and soul of the beauty of receiving Holy Communion and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
