May 29th E-NEWS

Years ago, when on a visit to Minter Gardens, I saw Kalmias (Mountain Laurel) for the first time – and it was love at first sight. The kalmias we have in stock this year are blooming right now and they are stunning! We have ‘Kaleidoscope’ (pictured above) as well as ‘Keepsake’ and ‘Olympic Wedding’ (see below). A broadleaf evergreen, they grow best in the same conditions that Rhododendrons favour – moist, well-drained acidic soil in bright light but in a position that

doesn’t receive much direct winter sunlight. All of our Kalmias are 35% off this week.

Keepsake Olympic Wedding

We’ve been getting great planting and growing weather and it’s definitely NOT too late

to plant! All of our plants in 4 packs, however, need to be planted soon because there isn’t much soil volume in those 4 little cells so this week all of our remaining 4 packs (flowers and veggies) are just $1.00 ea. You don’t have to compromise on quality because the plants looks great – most are ones I ordered in just for this sale – so take advantage of this great deal to plug in plants wherever you need them or have room.

With the resurgence of interest in growing food at home, small fruits of all descriptions are enjoying renewed popularity. Most are very easy to grow and, being woody shrubs or vines, provide years of healthy snacks

and delicious desserts. This week all of our small fruit bushes and vines are 35% off. Our small fruit selection includes

blueberries (20 different varieties); sea buckthorn; black, red, white and pink currants; elderberries; gogi berries; figs (Chicago Hardy); gooseberries; nine varieties of haskaps; hop vines (to make your own brew); jostaberry; hardy kiwi

vines; lingonberries; Nanking cherries;

raspberries; and seven varieties of Saskatoons BUT we are currently out of blackberry plants. As you’ve been tending to your garden, you’ve no doubt noticed that it’s time to tie up or provide support to some of the plants. It just so

happens that all of our plant supports are on sale this week at 20% off. Included in the sale are the tomato cages, stakes, peony supports, metal obelisks and trellises.

Some of you have been patiently waiting for our annual vines to arrive – particularly the Mandevilla’s (Dipladenia). I’m happy to report that they finally arrived this week. We have white, red and rose-pink mandevilla plants in 1 gal. pots with small trellis supports @ $15 ea. and we have larger ‘Red Riding Hood’ plants @ 31.50 ea.

We presently have Jasmine, Cup and Saucer, Possum Purple Passion, Bougainvillea and Cardinal vines as well as the Mandevilla. While I’m sure that almost everyone who’s ever planted up a container has used ‘spikes’ (dracaena/cordyline) in the past, there are many other options available. We have several different

varieties of New Zealand Flax (Phormium) in

stock that make gorgeous, large, heat-loving

‘thrillers’. They’re 25% off this week.

LET ME INTRODUCE YOU:

Interestingly – because I had already

planned to feature the deer-resistant cedar hedging we stock in our FridayA.M. ad and in this

newsletter - a couple was in yesterday asking for something they could spray on their new cedar hedge to prevent deer from browsing on it. I’m

happy to recommend Bobbex or Plantskydd for that job but where deer pressure is high, it’s better to plant a cedar hedge that the deer will ignore. In parts of the Shuswap (especially in more rural areas and next to water courses or the lake), the deer can quickly nibble away at hedging cedars so they’re anything but esthetically pleasing (see below).

The good news, however, is this: there are cultivars of the native Western Red Cedar, Thuja plicata, that are deer resistant!! We’ve stocked a few in the past but this year (because I know many of you are struggling with the damage those lovely four-legged creatures do), I brought in a

good supply of the GELDERLAND CEDAR.

This cedar has been grown in Europe for a number of years but is only now being introduced into North America. It’s a fast-growing, compact cedar that grows about 3-6 feet wide and will grow eventually to at least 15 feet high (information on ultimate growth is still unavailable because it’s so new) and, like other hedging cedars can be pruned to the height and width desired. Like older cultivars of the Eastern white cedar, Thuja occidentalis (which is commonly grown for hedging), it takes on bronzy tones in winter but the aromatic foliage returns to a bright green each spring. It is hardy to Zone 5. The Gelderland’s that we have in stock are presently about 5 feet high, container-grown in 5 gallon pots and are priced at 31.00 ea. But when

planting a hedge, you’ll need multiple plants so, of course, there are volume discounts: you’ll get 25% off if you get 10-19 plants and if you need more than 20 for your hedge, you’ll get a 30% discount! If there’s a new hedge in your future, keep the Gelderland cedars in mind and if you’re fed up with the damage your Emerald or Pyramid cedars sustain, perhaps it’s time to take them out and plant these instead.

I don’t know if it’s fashionable to love geraniums but I do, especially the fancy-leaf

varieties (pictured). With beautiful foliage and lots of blooms these plants are as fabulous in containers as they are in the garden. All geraniums are very versatile and while we think of them as being primarily plants for full sun, they are also remarkably tolerant

of shade. All of our geraniums (technically

Pelargoniums), including the ivy, zonal, interspecific,

Martha Washington, scented leaf, and fancy leaf

varieties are each $1.00 OFF the regular

price this week,

With warm outdoor temperatures we all tend to leave windows and doors open more. But that often means that insects manage to make it indoors in spite

of the screens. Venus Fly Traps are a fun way to get some help with insect control and they’re fascinating to watch and to grow. They’re perfect in mossy terrariums (we stock glass terrariums of all sizes) and they’re easy to care for. Check out this link for more information: https://www.flytrapcare.com/

This week all of our Venus Fly Traps are 25% off the regular price. One of the best ways to prevent the formation of algae in water features is to make sure that 60-70% of the water surface is covered with floating plants such as the water lettuce and water hyacinths. We now have both in stock.
