All are welcome to the Rock-

mass, held the first Monday of

each month at 7:30 pm at St.

Francis of Assisi Church on

Germonds Rd. in West Nyack.

MINISTER TO THE PARISH

Would you consider serving the parish as altar server, catechist, choir member, extraordinary minister of Holy

Communion, lector, usher, or greeter?

We need help in each area, at each mass. You can do

it! None of these requires perfection, just a willingness to help facilitate the celebration of the liturgy. If you have any questions or would be willing to be trained,

please speak to Father Vladimir or call the parish office.

Roundup

March 11 — The Knights of Columbus Joyce Kilmer Assembly 698 celebrated their March mass, followed by a meeting, at St.

Ann’s. This group, which consists of members of Rockland County K of C councils who have received the highest rank of Fourth

Degree, meets six times a year at different parishes. The Piermont Council was the host this month. The inset shows a chalice

displayed at Fourth Degree meetings. It is donated in memory of deceased members and is engraved with their names. It is given

as a gift, usually to a visiting priest from a country where chalices are hard to come by.

ROOTS, LEAVES . . .

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

WHEN WE TRY TO LIVE OUR CHRISTIAN

LIFE on our own power, without depending on God's grace, we eventually get stuck and frustrated. We either stop growing in virtue, or we are unable to overcome some sinful habit.

Imagine a tree that only had roots and a trunk, but no branches and no leaves. It wouldn't live very long. It would absorb

moisture and nutrients from the soil. But without leaves that spread out and catch the rays of sunlight, it would receive no energy to turn that moisture and those nutrients into growth and fruitfulness.

Christ, the Son of God and the revelation of His love for each one of us, is the sunlight that gives life and energy to our spiritual efforts.

Only by discovering His love and letting it shine in our hearts will we in turn be able to overcome our natural selfishness and learn to love others as He has loved us.

IN SOLEMN CEREMONIES AND ON

GREAT FEAST DAYS, like Easter and Christmas, we use incense during our masses. The sweet smell of the burning incense as it rises upwards is a symbol of our prayers as we lift them to God during mass.

But the little grains of incense can't turn themselves into sweet-smelling smoke. They are just hard granules of resin, like little pebbles. Only when they are placed on top of a red-hot, burning coal is their sweetness released; only then do they reach their full potential and fulfill their mission.

We are like that.

Only when our lives are put in direct contact with God's burning love for us do we really discover the meaning of our existence; only then can we reach our full potential. The fire fuels the incense. God's love fuels the meaning of our lives.

AND INCENSE

(Above) Members of the St. Paul and St. Ann Legion of Mary: Leonora Sumangil, Ruth Carlson, Leslie Maresca, Eddy Sopin, and Marie Joseph-Borno. (Above, right) Renato Sumangil (first row, second from left), who is also a member, appears with the men from other local area Legion praesidia who attended the Acies.

March 24 —The beautiful Acies ceremony, in which the

members of the Legion of Mary annually renew and publicly

express their Consecration to Mary, took place in St. Mary’s

Church in Yonkers this year. This ceremony is held worldwide,

as close to the Feast of the Annunciation (March 25) as

possible. A reception followed. To view some videos of the

ceremony and to learn more about the work of the Legion of

Mary, go to their webpage on our parish site, stann-nyack.org.

Click on the “Ministries” tab, then “Legion of Mary.”
