2OUI DESIGN 7–20 MAY, 2016 — NEW YORK CULTURAL SERVICES FRENCH EMBASSY IN THE US

Oui Design is a multifaceted program developed by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy to foster creative exchange in design between France and the U.S. By partnering with individuals and institutions, Oui Design supports and initiates creative collaborations with designers, artisans, curators, inventors, researchers, teachers, students, and manufacturers. It also brings French designers to the U.S. to exhibit their work, and to engage with industry professionals and the public.

During NYCxDESIGN, New York City’s official city-wide celebration of design (May 3 -17), Oui Design will present a series of projects at WantedDesign exploring the intersection of design and savoir-faire, new production processes, and the impact of design on our daily lives. The projects presented at WantedDesign Brooklyn reflect WantedDesign "French-New Yorker" co-founders Odile Hainaut and Claire Pijoulat commitment as Oui Design’s primary partner.

The program will include the Transatlantic Creative Exchange, showcasing new glass, upholstery, and aluminum works and prototypes by French-American designer-manufacturer teams.

Celebrated French designer matali crasset will present We  trust in wood, an exhibition of a series of objects that came out of a collaboration with local artisans during a residency at Vent des Forêts rural art center in Meuse, France.

Finally, Matt Sindall, designer and teacher at École Nationale Supérieure de Création Industrielle-Les Ateliers (ENSCI-Les Ateliers), one of France’s most prestigious design schools, will lead a workshop for design students entitled Thinking and Making: Exploring Materials with a Notion of Playfulness. From May 13-16, students from six international design schools: ENSCI-Les Ateliers (France), Université Aalto (Finland), Centro (Mexico), Pratt Institute (United States), Escuela de Comunicación Mónica Herrera (El Salvador), and Art Center College of Design (United States), will work together and present a final project to a jury.

Simultaneously, WantedDesign Manhattan will present a French pavilion with manufacturers organized in partnership with Business France. In addition, the entrance to WantedDesign Manhattan will feature a site-specific collage project by French graphic artists Antoine+Manuel, commissioned by Visual Magnetics.

On May 11 at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, YMER&MALTA Director Valérie Maltaverne will give a presentation on the philosophy and process of her French design studio, which she conceives of as a research lab.

On May 13 and 20 at the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD), curator Alexandra Midal will present Designers Screenings, a series of films and videos by designers.

Oui Design brings the work of 27 international designers and curators plus 15  manufacturers and institutions to New York in May for NYCxDESIGN

as part of the French Embassy’s initiative to  enhance French-American exchange in the field of design

Oui Design is supported by Institut français-Paris, the French Ministry of Culture and Communication, FACE Foundation, and the Florence Gould Foundation.

5OUI DESIGN 7–20 MAY, 2016 — NEW YORK CULTURAL SERVICES FRENCH EMBASSY IN THE US

The “Transatlantic Creative Exchange” project will unfold between May 2016 and May 2017. A total of 10 French-American pairings have been created, based on mutual interest in collaborating on a project. The goal is for both designers and manufacturers to experiment and explore new areas of creation together, thanks to the designers’ creativity and vision combined with manufacturers and artisans unique expertise and cultural background. The exhibition at WantedDesign Brooklyn will showcase prototypes and unique pieces resulting from the collaborations between the French and American designers and manufacturers. The participants come from all around both countries, offering an interesting way to discover different regions of France and the U.S. through their creative backgrounds.

The following designer-manufacturer teams are confirmed for 2016:

CHAPTER 1: MAY 2016- GLASS: Centre International d’Art Verrier de Meisenthal (CIAV) based in Meisenthal (Parc régional des Vosges du Nord, France) + U.S. designer Steven Haulenbeek- GLASS: Centre International de Recherche sur le Verre et les Arts Plastiques (Cirva) based in Marseille (France) + U.S. designer Jonah Takagi- UPHOLSTERY: Ligne Roset (France) +  U.S. designer Marc  Thorpe- ALUMINIUM: Neal Feay Company (world leader in creative aluminum) + French designer Noé Duchaufour Lawrance- ALUMINIUM: TABISSO (Saint-Nazaire, France) +  U.S . designer Michael Sean Stolworthy

“As French New Yorkers, promoting French creativity and savoir-faire and initiating French-American collaborations has been a dear and important mission for us since the beginning of WantedDesign. The Oui Design program is a key initiative that we are thrilled to support and to be part of. The Transatlantic Creative Exchange is a unique opportunity for French manufacturers to discover the new generation of American designers who may not be as well known in France. And for the designers, it’s a chance to experiment, think outside of the box, bring a new vision and new ideas to life without commercial constraints. It’s exciting for the manufacturers as well to be able to push boundaries and develop extraordinary pieces that highlight their expertise. And it’s an amazing opportunity to share the magic behind the making of a beautiful object with the WantedDesign audience.” Odile Hainaut and Claire Pijoulat

6OUI DESIGN 7–20 MAY, 2016 — NEW YORK CULTURAL SERVICES FRENCH EMBASSY IN THE US

Vent des Forêts is a rural art center located in Meuse, France, near the borders of Luxembourg, Belgium and Germany. Every year since 1997, artists have been invited for residencies at this secluded natural setting. In 2009, matali crasset began interacting with this space. Vent des Forêts is open to the public and invites meandering walks, thinking, and dreaming. It also doubles as a private forestry operation. At Vent des Forêts, crasset designed three “Maisons Sylvestres” (huts): The Birdhouse, The Hazelnut, and Chrysalis. These are small wooden structures in which a hiker could spend the night, taking his or her meal on a plate made of sycamore wood with a carved rice spoon, and bundling up in a stitched blanket or in a wool scarf woven à l’ancienne.

For the collection We trust in wood, matali crasset has developed close relationships with a group of local artisans who impart to each of their creations their own expertly cultivated style and their personal flare. The cabinetmaker assembles a small oak stool, the basketmaker braids a wicker bread cover, the blacksmith polishes a cuit-pommes (a small inox rotisserie for baking apples), and students from a specialized high school assemble candleholders. We trust in wood presents the richness of a very elemental exchange between the designer and the artisans of a territory not known for its resources.

“To try to prolong the experience with the Maisons Sylvestres, it seemed logical for us to focus next on creating a series of objects that would offer simple but rich interac with wood: eating on wooden plates, cooking in unusual containers… These were developed along with local artisans, who often run one-man productions: wood sculptors, basket weavers, wood or metal turners, wrought iron makers, the Carmelite Nuns of Verdun. Obviously, aside from simply making these objects, this project was also about spotlighting men and women in a particular field, with certain methods and skills, and hopefully leading them on to other adventures and projects.” matali crasset

7OUI DESIGN 7–20 MAY, 2016 — NEW YORK CULTURAL SERVICES FRENCH EMBASSY IN THE US

The École Nationale Supérieure de Création Industrielle-Les Ateliers (ENSCI-Les Ateliers) is one of the leading industrial design schools in France. Based in Paris, and very much oriented toward cutting edge technology, ENSCI-Les Ateliers has trained many world-class designers such as Patrick Jouin, Jean-Louis Fréchin and matali crasset.

For its sixth edition, WantedDesign will invest in its school outreach programs with new zeal. After an extremely successful exhibition at the Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Etienne in 2014, followed by an inaugural exhibition, Diplorama+, at WantedDesign Brooklyn in 2015, and having participate to three previousWantedDesign workshops, ENSCI-Les

Ateliers will lead the Design Schools Workshop in 2016.

Over the course of five days, 27 students from six international design schools including ENSCI-Les Ateliers (France), Université Aalto (Finland), Centro (Mexico), Pratt Institute (United States), Escuela de Comunicación Mónica Herrera (El Salvador), and Art Center College of Design (United States), will work together and present a final project to a jury. A workshop, Thinking and Making: Exploring Materials with the Notion of Playfulness, will be led from May 13-16 by Matt Sindall (French designer and teacher at ENSCI-Les Ateliers).

“The workshop centers around the idea that ‘playfulness’ can be instilled into an object and can generate a positive effect either through the perception or the use of the object. I  would like the students to understand that a successful object embraces the intellect, emotions, and intuition. My hope is that the students can develop proposals that articulate these factors in a symbiotic manner. Much of the development work will be carried out ahead of time online to allow time for the fabrication of the projects once in New York.” Matt Sindall

French graphic artists Antoine Audiau and Manuel Warosz (Antoine+Manuel) will present a collage project using a wall covered in magnetic paint produced by Visual Magnetics.

“We are honored  to have Antoine and Manuel take  our materials for a spin as a new medium.  Our collaboration with the design duo creates an  opportunity for WantedDesign Manhattan visitors to totally immerse themselves in one of their pieces in the form of an expansive interactive mural. This project is particularly interesting because few  graphic  designers are able to  pique  curiosity, and push creative limits, in the same way that Antoine+Manuel do—beyond an installation, it will be an experience.”  Joe Deetz, Visual Magnetics  CEO

In addition to their participation in this project, Antoine+Manuel were also commissioned by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy to create the logo and visual identity for the Oui Design program. In their work, Antoine+Manuel often use typography and illustrations to make collages and photo reconstructions with a surrealist touch. For Oui Design, Antoine+Manuel designed an innovative, dynamic graphic that evokes architecture, typographic drawing and contemporary design. The letters that form the words “Oui Design” link together like a mobile or a toy train. The textures and bright colors form a landscape or planet.

“We have been fond of design since we were teenagers, so we were very excited by the Oui Design project. We didn’t want to go too quickly in an obvious and cliché direction. […] There aren’t precise references, more intuitions, I would say, or sensations we wanted to express: landscape, delicious, technical, signage, humor, materialism, mobile. We also thought these two-dimensional letters could become an actual object, and then maybe adding the fourth dimension to it, with low-tech short animated images.” Antoine+Manuel

In collaboration with the city-wide NYCxDESIGN festival, the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) has invited guest curator Alexandra Midal to present a two-part program of film shorts entitled Designers Screenings. Envisioned as a series of statements, Designers Screenings is a vibrant celebration of the medium of film and video, as harnessed by designers. It shows the expanding boundaries of the design discipline. Intended for anyone interested in storytelling, design and visual studies, the screenings will illustrate how film has become a powerful language for designers.

“It is no coincidence that design and cinema blossomed during the same years. Norman Bel Geddes, one of the first major industrial designers in the U.S., worked in Hollywood before opening his studio on Broadway. And iconic designer-architect, Charles Eames, directed air acrobatics scenes on Billy Wilder’s The Spirit of St. Louis, and even helped write the movie’s script.” Alexandra Midal

10OUI DESIGN 7–20 MAY, 2016 — NEW YORK CULTURAL SERVICES FRENCH EMBASSY IN THE US

Revisiting traditional French crafts, or savoir-faire, such as marquetry, inlaying, and carving, the French design studio YMER&MALTA creates limited edition contemporary furniture and design objects. Produced using timeless materials - marble, leather, glass, and wood - YMER&MALTA pieces are precious objects that are built to last and remain relevant far into the future.

On May 11, YMER&MALTA Director Valérie Maltaverne with Sarah Coffin, Curator and Head, Product Design and Decorative Arts Department at Cooper Hewitt, will give a presentation at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum on the philosophy and process of her company, and discuss three exceptional works from the studio’s marquetry collection designed by Benjamin  Graindorge, Sylvain Rieu-Piquet, and Sebastian Bergne.

“YMER&MALTA studio is known for its unique approach to design. Our work is  constantly fluctuating between art, design and craft.  Each collection is a witty combination of traditional craftsmanship and cutting edge innovation; we offer timeless design pieces. Our way of working is very special. It’s a constant dialogue. The creative process usually lasts two years and is an ongoing dialogue between designers, the craftsmen and YMER&MALTA. But first it begins with the designer and me:  we discuss and swap ideas every day. It’s often a long, winding path from the first sketch to the extraordinary final work, seemingly so obvious that we should instantly have discovered the right material, colors, techniques and skills.” Valérie Maltaverne

Paulin, Paulin, PaulinGallery Perrotin, New YorkJun. 23 – Aug. 19, 2016 909 Madison Ave, New York, NY  10021

“I was aiming to show just how far we could make modernity go.” Pierre PaulinThe exhibition displays Pierre Paulin designs produced in limited editions by Paulin, Paulin, Paulin the firm founded by Pierre Paulin’s family in 2008. These iconic objects by the most famous French designer of his day, that institution such as MoMA acquired in 1967, heralded the new society being shaped by the massive cultural, economic and technological changes of the early 1960s. Paulin’s furniture fitted the forms of the human body as it freed itself of social constraints. His rigorous research into new materials, combined with innovative construction methods placing wellbeing at the heart of the process, authorised all kinds of arrangements and made space malleable. Paulin’s radical artistic stance conjoined formal modularity with sensuous functionalism.

A retrospective of Pierre Paulin will be held at Centre Pompidou in Paris from May 11 to August 22, 2016.

Proust’s Muse: The Countess Greffulhe The Museum at FIT, Fashion Institute of TechnologySep. 22, 2016 – Jan. 3, 2017 Seventh Ave at 27 St, New York, NY 10001

This exhibition will feature 40 extraordinary fashion pieces and accessories from the fabulous wardrobe of Elisabeth de Caraman-Chimay, the Countess Greffuhle (1860-1952). A famous beauty, celebrated for her “aristocratic and artistic elegance,” the Countess had an audacious sense of style. She fascinated her contemporaries, including Marcel Proust who told her cousin, Robert de Montesquiou: “I have never seen a woman so beautiful.” When Proust wrote his novel, In Search of Lost Time, the Countess Greffuhle was one of the primary inspirations for his immortal fictional character, Oriane, the Duchess de Guermantes, of whom he wrote: “Each of her dresses seemed like… the projection of a particular aspect of her soul.”

This exhibition has been presented at Palais Galliera in Paris from Nov. 2015 to Mar. 2016, curated by Olivier  Saillard.

Pierre Chareau: Modern Architecture and Design The Jewish Museum Nov. 4, 2016 – Mar. 26, 20171109 Fifth Ave, New  York, NY 10128

In recent years Pierre Chareau (1883-1950) has been rediscovered as one of the early twentieth century’s leading figures of French Decorative Arts. He rose from modest beginnings in Bordeaux’s Jewish community to become one of Paris’s most fashionable designers, primarily known for his custom-made furniture and lighting. His residential masterpiece, the Maison de Verre, has exerted a lasting influence on architects since the early 1930s, but his legacy as a designer is under-acknowledged along with the difficulty he endured while fleeing from Nazi persecution to the United States. Pierre Chareau: Modern Architecture and Design provides a fresh look at the internationally recognized designer in order to showcase his beautiful pieces in a rich cultural context. The exhibition will also focus on Chareau’s patronage of the arts and recreate his own art collection of paintings, sculptures, and drawings by significant artists, which included works by Picasso, Braque, Gris, Mondrian, Modigliani, Miro, and Chagall.

OUI DESIGN UPCOMING PROJECTS IN 2016 – 2017Oui Design is a two-year long program and it will continue to develop new projects

in collaboration with American institutions, galleries and fairs.

matali crasset Industrial Designer matali crasset is an industrial designer by training. With a knowledgeable yet open-minded view of the world, she questions the obviousness of visual codes in order to dismantle them. Her symbolic, hospitality-focused work, such as Quand Jim monte à Paris (When Jim goes up to Paris), is based on a series of visual and conscious perceptions for which she invents new relationships with everyday space and objects. Her proposals are never simply directed towards an improvement of what already exists, but toward a development of typologies structured around principles such as modularity, interlacing networks, etc. She collaborates with eclectic worlds, from electronic music to the textile industry, realizing projects in set design, furniture, architecture, graphics, collaborations with artists, and more. —

Noé Duchaufour LawranceSculptor, DesignerNoé Duchaufour Lawrance began his career in sculpture, seeking to recreate historical ties to the natural world in his own work. He loves to marry beauty and necessity, harmony and responsibility. To evoke emotion through the use of form has become a challenge for him, and he brought this practice to design. Duchaufour Lawrance never limits the scope of his work, and develops projects with manufacturers (Ligne Roset, Bernhardt Design, Ceccotti Collezionni, Cinna, Zanotta), interior designers (Air France lounges, Ciel de Paris, the Yquem restaurant at Le Meurice, the chalet Transhumance) and even luxury groups (Paco Rabanne, YSL Beauté, Perrier Jouët).—

The pedagogy at ENSCI-Les Ateliers revolves around practical projects: students draw from theoretical and experimental approaches and workshops run by professional designers, in order to create their own work. In addition to instructors, the institution invites various experts, artists, engineers, philosophers, and industry professionals to teach. In the studio, students and professors work side-by-side, using traditional materials such as wood, metal and plastic, and modern materials such as composites and textiles. Studies and experimentations extend to micro and nanotechnology, digital labs, and new communication and information technology. matali crasset, Patrick Jouin, Jean-Louis Fréchin, Laurent Massaloux, Benjamin Graindorge, Constance Guisset, and Sylvain Rieu-Piquet are among the designers and architects who have graduated from ENSCI-Les Ateliers. —

Marguerite HumeauArtist, DesignerMarguerite Humeau’s work stages the crossing of great distances in time and space; transitions between animal and mineral; and encounters between personal desires and natural forces. Humeau weaves factual events into speculative narratives, thereby enabling unknown, invisible, unreachable, extinct or synthetic forms of life to erupt in grandiose splendor. Combining prehistory, occult biology, and science fiction in a disconcerting spectacle, the works resuscitate the past, conflate subterranean and subcutaneous, all the while updating the quest genre for the information age. Humeau’s design work has been shown in various solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums, including the MoMA (New York), The Victoria & Albert Museum, and the Hayward Gallery (London). In 2016, she will have a solo show at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. —

Ligne RosetDesign ManufacturerLigne Roset is one of the most influential French manufacturers, creators and distributors. All Ligne Roset products are developed at the company’s own industrial site (in Ain, France), which allows the company to control the quality of its products from start to finish. Creativity, a key value of the brand, is also expressed through the materials and the manufacturing processes; if a new product demands it, the industrial tools integrate new hardware, and the company acquires new skills. This philosophy of innovation remains constant to the brand, stretching from the materials (wood, metal, synthetic foam, plastic) to the finished products (seats, furniture, lighting, textiles, carpets and bedding). Designers, architects, and fashion designers who work for Ligne Roset include Jean Nouvel, Jean Charles de Castelbajac, Eric Jourdan, R. et E. Oui Design is a multifaceted program to foster creative exchange in design between France and the U.S. that was lauched in January 2016 by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy. By partnering with individuals and institutions on both sides of the Atlantic, Oui Design supports and initiates creative collaborations with designers, artisans, curators, inventors, researchers, teachers, students, and manufacturers. It also brings French designers to the U.S. to exhibit their work, and to engage with industry professionals and the public. In so doing, the program aims to enhance the economic and creative aspects of the design industry in both countries.

Supported by Institut français-Paris, the French Ministry of Culture and Communication, FACE Foundation, and the Florence Gould Foundation, Oui Design will consist of exhibitions, talks, workshops, debates, residencies, and more in New York in 2016 and 2017. Meanwhile, additional projects and events will take place in Boston, Chicago, and Miami. The program will offer U.S. audiences a context in which to discover and exchange with some of the most important designers and professionals in France today.

“The energy around design in New York City is undeniable. The city has always attracted creative people by virtue of its excellent museums, galleries, artist communities, and design fairs. In France, creative industries like design are integral to French life. They are as much a part of our national heritage as they are key players in our economy. Excellent design schools and a longstanding tradition of decorative arts have allowed France to cultivate a rich and varied design legacy. As a result, many French designers and companies from the cultural and creative sector have become global leaders in their field, contributing to the vitality of France’s economy. Our goal with Oui Design is to showcase this artistic excellence on an international stage, and sow seeds for an even deeper international collaboration,” said Bénédicte de Montlaur, Cultural Counselor of the French Embassy in the U.S.

The French Embassy commissioned French graphic artists Antoine Audiau and Manuel Warosz (Antoine+Manuel) to create a logo and visual identity for the Oui Design program. Antoine+Manuel designed a contemporary, innovative, dynamic graphic that evokes architecture, typographic drawing and contemporary design. The letters that form the words “Oui Design” link together like a mobile or a toy train. The textures and bright colors form a landscape or planet.

The Cultural Services of the French Embassy promotes the best of French arts, literature, cinema, digital innovation, language, and higher education across the U.S. Based in New York City, Washington D.C., and eight other cities across the country, the Cultural Services brings artists, authors, intellectuals and innovators to cities nationwide. It also builds partnerships between French and American artists, institutions, and universities on both sides of the Atlantic. In New York, through its bookshop Albertine, it fosters French-American exchange around literature and the arts. www.frenchculture.org
