Contributions from the

Boyle Center

Writing Group

Today’s Thoughts 1. We have sight, but we are blind.

2. Vulgar words used often dilute their desired effect. 3. Brevity makes a superb speech.

4. Don’t confront people, disarm them. 5. An ounce of common sense is worth more

than knowledge. 6. Obfuscated (obscure) laws thwart justice.

7. Do not create barriers in your mind. 8. Simplicity is both beauty and innocence.

9. The world’s way is not God’s. 10. God’s love is endless.

11. Innocence is freedom from guilt and cunning. 12. Deceit implies breaking of faith while

appearing to be loyal. 13. One line sayings focus your brain on achieving

more with less words. 14. Simplicity is beauty personified. We are stripped of all

artifice and reveal our inner selves. 15. Correcting our faults is like a mine field,

we find new ones every day. 16. The seduction of America is prevalent due to drugs,

pornography and foul language. 17. Not a dime to companies who advertise salacious

goods, products and immoral views. Let’s starve them out.

18. Government controls dependency through initiatives (bringing new ideas or practices into use) or put another way, government controls initiatives encouraging more

dependency. Either way we lose. Stand Up And Be Counted

Spring cleaning by Joyce Whitman

The sun is shining and the cobwebs are glistening in the beams of light,

edging us on to begin Spring cleaning. Books and dressers, walls and

corners, and kitchen cupboards, not to mention the spaces between re-

frigerators and stoves, covered with a years worth of dust and grime.

What about the mental cleaning? All those old gripes and

grudges you hold in your conscious thoughts. On New Years Day

many people engage in writing resolutions like weight loss or making

sure to sort the monthly receipts monthly so you don't have that mess at

tax time. Some people resolve to be kind to others or go to church

weekly but what about forgiveness or judgment?

Most of us carry around with us, preconceived ideas about

right and wrong, good or bad. We have spent years forming these judg-

ments. Spring is a good time to take a fresh look at our mind set and try

to see things from a fresh perspective.

New Year, New Look

The first big change in the new year was the installation of card ready

washers and dryers. The process was confusing at first, but now it’s

gradually beginning to fall into place and everyone is happy about not

having to buy all those quarters.

by Carol Wiseman

A Special Treat

Yesterday we were treated to a unique program,

the ARC “Spotlight Studio”.

These young people entertained us with songs such as “Hound Dog”,

“Splish Splash I Was Taking a Bath”, “It’s Not Easy Being Green”,

“Star Spangles Banner”, “My Country Tis of Thee”, “Amazing Grace”

and “May I Have This Dance”. One girl told jokes which were very

funny. They had beautiful voices and were well-poised.

It was a very enjoyable performance and I hope they return again soon.

by Carol Wiseman

I dialed a wrong number and got the following recording: I am not available right now, but thank you for caring enough to call. I am making some changes in my life. Please leave a message after the beep. If I do not return your call, you

are one of the changes. Jean Leader

May, ah! May. It’s that happy time of year when blossoms, buds and flowers appear and everything seems bright and new, at least, let’s hope so. April is behind us with all the rain and snow out of the way. May is our silver lining, it’s our lead-in to summer and warm weather and

glorious sunshine. We can put away boots, heavy coats, hats, gloves and

sweaters. Shorts and sandals will become our new attire. May 10th is a Jazz High School Band and Luncheon at our Auburn High School for only four dollars, a fun afternoon. May 11th is our Boyle Center tea, also another fun activity. Mother’s Day is also a very important day in May. May 27th is the downtown Majorpalooza and the 28th is Memorial Day with our Holiday Parade. So the month of May holds

many delights. So come out and join the fun. Jean Leader

A chain reaction

by Joyce Whitman

One morning John was in a hurry for work when he

spilled a can of coffee on the kitchen counter. Thinking he would

be late for work he started to get angry but then thought of his

pregnant wife and didn't want her to face the mess when she got up

so he took the time to clean the scattered coffee off the counter.

Arriving at the busy intersection John crossed daily, he

observed a collision that had happened just moments before. John

kept going and saw a friend Jack on the side of the road with his

emergency flashers on. He pulled over and asked his friend if he

needed a lift. Thankfully accepting the lift, his friend explained that

he had been called in to work at the fire department to cover for

another fireman who had been sent home sick. John continued on

to work and arrived right on time.

Jack's wife had gotten a call from her husband and she

was preparing to leave work to pick him up at his stranded car and

take him to work but before she could leave he let her know John

had rescued him and she could stay at work.

John's wife Jane, got up and discovered that she was in

labor and thing were moving fast. She called John but the call

went to voice mail, so she called the ambulance. Jack arrived with

the fire and rescue and realized it was John's wife so tried to called

him but got the same voice mail.

When Jane got to the hospital, her obstetrician, Jack's

wife, was there and took her straight to delivery. Jack went home

by way of John’s office to deliver the news that he was about to be

a father and give him an escort to the hospital.

An interesting chain reaction allowed everyone to be right

where they were suppose to be right when they needed to be.

If Jack had left the mess for his wife to clean up he might

have been at the intersection and been involved in a collision. The

fire and rescue might have been delayed because they were short

handed, and his wife might not have been at the hospital to deliver

Jane and John's baby. So the next time something happens that

causes you to be delayed, relax, and consider what might be the

reason.

Freedom

Freedom is less government intervention.

Freedom—more control of your own life.

Obfuscated laws thwart freedom and justice.

Freedom has parameters, for example:

Rioting versus peaceful assembly

Inflammatory speech versus cogent discussions

Writers expose ourselves in our written words and speech

and reveals who we truly are.

Some laws curtails your freedom.

Be aware of the implications and results of your words

and actions—they define you.

Words have power—do not abuse them.

Take the yoke off your back and become free.

Dependency for some can become chronic.

Stand Up And Be Counted

Lucy Cacciotti

Are You a Self-Starter?

Like a car that needs impetus to start, our brain is the one

thing that allows us to function. Used wisely, it will be an

asset all your life. Unwisely used will lead to all sorts of

problems. Respect it, for it controls your future.

Stand Up And Be Counted

Lucy Cacciotti

History Revisited

History—the past revisited and a cogent guide for the fu-

ture. Sadly we ignore the past and repeat egregious behav-

ior to our fellow man. Let us all commence now to become

more aware of our own personal faults and in the words of

Dale Carnegie “not criticize, condemn or complain”.

Change starts with one person. I’m ready, are you?

Stand Up And Be Counted

Lucy Cacciotti

Welcome Back by Henry Cooper

There are two ways to build self esteem. You can meas-

ure yourself by what you think other people think of you . This

method involves self induced fantasy. It often involves climbing

on others. That way you feel superior. You must repeat this

method constantly. Therefore the rush you get from climbing is

maintained.

The second method is that you can base your self esteem

on how you feel about yourself. You must be honest with yourself.

If you are not you are still living the fantasy of the afore mentioned

method. It may require considerable self searching but the more

you are honest with yourself the better you feel about yourself.

It is a good way to join the human race. Welcome back.

The Double Whammy by Henry Cooper

I endured the worst winter in history in Cincinnati, Ohio the winter

of 1973. It was so bad that the entire city was shut down. I left in

desperation and went to Atlanta, Georgia. The night before I got

there the city had a very unusual ice storm. There was half an inch

of ice on everything.

The weatherman said Atlanta hadn't had snow and ice for

26 years.

Good Grief.
