KEEP IT IN THE FAMILY

Once upon a time in the guise of a Costume Super-visor, I was fortunate enough to work with a Cos-tume Designer who voiced a philosophy for ourcostume department: “Keep conflict and turmoilamongst ourselves and present a wall of solidarity toall others.” Her analogy of a close-knit Italian familywas easy for me to comprehend. This path of actionwas one I agreed with then and concur with evenmore so now. Phone calls are often received concern-ing conduct between members. I must admit I wouldrather deal with disputes concerning productionproblems – Us against them, labor versus manage-ment – than internecine disagreements amongmembers. The labor questions are more often blackand white with easier solutions possible. Amongstourselves they are most often a constant shade ofgrey not easily solvable by agreements or past prac-tice. How often have we been on jobs where mem-bers disagree, argue or ignore each other? Thisweakens that crew and our Local. We must bandtogether to find solutions to problems or at leastmore positive ways to deal with them.

I can recall times past while day checking where theenvironment of the wardrobe trailer was at best icyand at worst almost hostile among members.Crewmembers of other craft locals have related tome that situations such as these are not unique tocostumers. But to be polite, I don’t care about othercrafts, I care about us. It’s hoped that with theupswing in production, members will stop feeling liketheir job is a chore, prison term or stint in a gulag. With more job opportunities available members canmove on, away from toxic environments to otherpositions somewhere else. This is a remedy not acure. We must be as respectful and responsive to ourfellow department members as we would be to theneeds of the lead actors or executives. We have allexperienced costumers whose servility to productionis only exceeded by their maleficence to their fellowcostumers. Any family might contain eccentric mem-bers: aunts, uncles or crazed cousins of which we arenot ecstatic. We accept their imperfections, as theyare part of us. Attendance at the occasional familyfunction isn’t comparable to sixty plus hours a weekwhile working together. We spend more waking hours

with our crew family than with our biological familyduring the week. Being on location only exacerbatesthe time situation. Our ability to get along and topresent a united front for a cohesive department onset and to production goes a long way in showing toothers our solidarity and strength. Every projectinvolves a bit of turmoil especially among creativepeople such as we are. It is the professional who per-severes and delivers allowing no outsider to view thecommotion.

Besides this display of unity, we must be able todepend on each other. When the going gets tough orproblems develop, it is our fellow costumers fromwhom we require assistance or offer help to resolvethe dilemma. It is great and essential to be friendlywith other departments but when help is needed wecan only count on ourselves and our costume-crewbrethren to supply it. Coming together and realizingthat by being a positive part of this family-like unitand doing the best by it as a whole, illustrates whowe are. Kindred spirits giving respect and compassionto the members of our 705 family. This departmentalstrength and unity comes through creating a recog-nition based on skill and professionalism allowingother crafts and production to realize and appreciateour worth and unique qualities. An acknowledgmentcreated not by “being nice” or avoiding being pettyor overbearing. But showing our abilities: represent-ing our Local and exemplifying the best there is:being knowledgeable, professional and open. We addto our prestige and gain respect by illustrating toothers that our skill-set involves more than just put-ting clothes on acting talent and shopping. We showpride in being part of a vibrant and vital union fam-ily, ready to respond to any task that comes our way.We show our strength and power, always prepared totake on any emergency. We perform our duties with-out fuss or bother, drama free because it is our jobto do so. We have earned an unrivaled reputation forexcellence. We are strong. We are united. We are Local 705.

In Solidarity,

Bob
