MAY FESTIVAL 2012 This is the eighteenth annual celebration of music within the context of worship to be held here at St Stephen’s. We welcome many music lovers and over a hundred performers who join with us for these three glorious days. Our special guests this year include Colin Walsh who will be giving the Whitlock recital. He is Organist of Lincoln Cathedral and is remembered locally as the assistant organist of Salisbury Cathedral some 30 years ago and has given many memorable recitals on our organ. The composer of the festival commission is Michael Walsh. The official biographer of our former organist Percy Whitlock, Malcolm Riley will be giving the lecture. We also again welcome Andrew Fletcher as our festival organist. The choir of Exeter Cathedral directed by Andrew Millington will be singing the Festival Evensong, and on Monday the Chichester Voices directed by Dr Andrew Naylor will be singing evensong. Our own choir will once again be joined by the Durlston Court School Choir for the Sunday Choral and Orchestral Concert which is a tribute to Benjamin Britten in his centenary year. The main work is his masterpiece St Nicolas with Ian Wicks singing the title role. On Monday the lunchtime concert is being given by the oboist Lara Forbes and the soprano Sarah Palfreyman- Kay in a programme of Britten’s music. The final event on Monday evening features our own choir singing choral items, with organ solos played by a variety of well known organists. We hope to welcome many who have been with us before over the eighteen years of this festival and will be delighted to meet all for whom 2013 will be your first visit.
