The Second Va can Council: A 50th Anniversary Retrospec ve By the twenty-first Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church, October 11, 1962-December 8, 1965; Edited by Jerry Back

“The best prepara on for the new millennium, there-fore, can only be expressed in a renewed commitment to apply, as faithfully as possible, the teachings of Va can II to the life of every individual and of the whole Church.” - Pope John Paul II, Ter o Millenio Ad-veniente, 1994

Ques on: How many types of holiness are there? Answer from Lumen Gen um: The classes and du es of life are many, but holiness is one—that sanc ty which is cul vated by all who are moved by the Spirit of God, and who obey the voice of the Father and worship God the Father in spirit and in truth. These people follow the poor Christ, the humble and cross-bearing Christ in order to be worthy of being sharers in His glory. Every person must walk unhesita ngly according to his own personal gi s and du es in the path of living faith, which arouses hope and works through charity.

Ques on: How can each of us increase our holiness? Answer from Lumen Gen um: Finally all Christ's faithful, whatever be the condi ons, du es and circumstances of their lives—and indeed through all these, will daily increase in holi-ness, if they receive all things with faith from the hand of their heavenly Father and if they cooperate with the divine will. In this temporal service, they will manifest to all men the love with which God loved the world.

Editor’s Note: In my RCIA class (i.e., Rite of Chris an Ini a on of Adults, which is a series of parish-based instruc on that most converts will take before being received fully into the Catholic Church), I took a test to help me discern any par cu-larly strong charisms within my possession. These are gi s of the Holy Spirit that might help me in life bring others to the faith, as well as keep me growing in personal holiness. Some examples of charisms (none of them mine, incidentally) in-clude: ministry, prophecy, ministry, generosity, teaching, mer-ciful works, leadership, healing, wisdom, etc.

Different people possess different charisms, but we all have at least one. Reflect upon what yours is and use that knowledge to be a more effec ve witness for the faith and to help you grow further in your own faith!

We o en find ourselves drawn to dig deeper into our Catholic faith. You are encouraged to explore more at: h p://www.va can.va/archive/ At the Va can’s website, you’ll find a wealth of free and complete Catholic resources including the Bible, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the Code of Can-on law and the en rety of the Second Va can Council.

FAZtor’s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora Gung Hay Fat Choy! It’s Chinese New Year this weekend, Sunday February 10, to be exact. And it’s the “Year of the Snake.” Gung Hay Fat Choy actually means “Best wishes and congratula-tions. Have a prosperous and good year.”

Some of our parishioners attended the annual Archdioc-esan Chinese Dinner two Fridays ago celebrating Chinese New Year. The dinner was attended by four bishops: Archbishop Cordileone, Bishop Justice, Retired Bishop Walsh, who is now residing at St. Anne’s Church, and our very own Bishop Wang. At the end of the meal, the bishops and the many priests in attendance gave a unified blessing to the people. As it has al-ways been in the past, the dinner was well-attended. By the way, the Archbishop gave a message opening with few Chi-nese phrases. It reminded me of this story. At a New Year celebration meal, an American seated next to a Chinese man, pointed to the soup and asked some-what condescendingly, 'Likee soupee?' The Chinese gentlemen nodded eagerly. A little later, it was 'Likee fishee?' and 'Likee meatee?' and 'Likee fruitee?' and always the response was an affable nod. At the end of the dinner the chairman of the Yuan-Xiao festival introduced the guest speaker of the evening: none other than the Chinese gentleman who delivered a penetrating, witty discourse in impeccable English, much to the astonishment of his American neighbor. When the speech was over, the speaker turned to his neighbor and with a mischievous twinkle in his eye and asked, 'Likee speechee?' Back to that Chinese dinner, it was the 22nd year that the Chinese Ministry of our Archdiocese had been hosting that. Wow, 22 – that was my age 30 years ago. And exactly on the same day of this 2013 Chinese New Year, I will celebrate my 26th birthday for the second time. That’s a subtle way of reveal-ing my age. But it is indeed a new year for me. Celebrating a birthday is always a new year, a new life for the celebrant. Yet, the season of Lent, which starts on Ash Wednesday this week, reminds me that our life is just “lent” from the Lord, “to dust we shall return.” But ultimately, we will return to the One who made us.

For now, let us celebrate Chinese New Year, birth-days and Valentines Day this week.

Dear Holy Name Families, I hope you all enjoyed our Science Fair last Thursday evening. It was nice to visit with parents and students as we all checked out the many wonderful sci-ence projects. A big thank you to Mrs. Laura Miller who guided 6th, 7th and 8th grade students in the process of science experimentation and presentation for weeks leading up to the event. Thank you to all of the class teachers in grades K-5th who helped their students pre-pare class projects, science notebooks, posters etc. A huge note of appreciation goes to our es-teemed Genentech scientists who took the time on Wednesday evening to judge the entries. Their opinion of our students’ work is certainly valued and adds to the authenticity of the Science Fair. Thank you to Sister Esther Ling, Mrs. Sharon Aymard, Mrs. Diane Preble and Mr. Tony Eiras for pre-paring the 2nd grade students so well for their First Rec-onciliation this past Saturday. All of the students were included in this beautiful ceremony, which was followed by a lovely reception sponsored by our 1st grade parents. Thank you to Mrs. Ellen Gee (Nathaniel 1st gr.) and Mrs. Kim Toriumi-Quon (Kaylie 1st gr.) for organizing parents to provide food items for the party. Thank you also for setting up, serving the food and cleaning up Flanagan Center. I do think, “Many hands made light work.” Please see the list of helpful parents in the bulletin. During the past several weeks, students in grades K, 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7A & 7B had their vision screened by volunteer parents. Thank you to Mrs. Carolyn Brown (David 6B) and Mrs. Noreen Chan (Reyna Ramos-Santos 6B) who attended a class to prepare them to screen our students and direct other parents in the correct proce-dure. Thank you to the wonderful team of parents who helped with the screening. Their names are listed in the bulletin. God bless Mrs. Rita Nolan, Miss Anna Rivieccio, our 7th grade students and a number of their parents dur-ing their week at outdoor education, Caritas Creek.

Sincerely, Mrs. Judy Cosmos
