The Art of GroomingTRANSCRIPT
IN FLUENTIAL 2
ersonal grooming is like a home for sale; our
image is what helps sell “us” in various aspects
of our lives. Our resume may tell the story of a
highly experienced and accomplished individual,
but if our appearances don't follow suit, we put ourselves at a
disadvantage. We miss out on opportunities for advancement
at work or fulfillment in our personal lives.
Grooming doesn’t just refer to our personal appearances;
grooming is in every facet of our lives, such as a manicured
lawn or the way we care for our pets. How well we manage
in these areas speak volumes about our character. Our
appearances largely impact our lives because it’s the first, and
sometimes only, impression people have of us. Choosing to
ignore common personal grooming habits may indicate to
those around us that we do not take pride in our work because
we don't take pride in our appearance. Even worse, potential
employers may feel we should not be taken seriously.
We’re pleased to share our take on these very topics and
indulge on some ideas that work well for members of the
InFluential team.
I value the importance of good grooming and one can never
be too learned to benefit from a few reminders.
If you’ve got a few tricks up your sleeve, we’d love to hear
them!
Sincerely,
William Jackson

t’s that time of year again. Spring has sprung.
The birds are singing. The flowers are blooming.
The grass is growing. The sky is blue. It’s the
time of year when we open our windows and doors to let in the
fresh air and sunshine. When we do, that’s the very moment
we realize everything is a bit dusty, drab, and disheveled from
having hibernated through the winter. What is one to do?
Some people call it Spring Cleaning. Here at InFluential we call
it grooming.
Grooming is something that everyone and everything needs.
Whether your hair needs a trim or your furniture needs a dusting,
it all needs maintenance. With the new season comes the
realization that our lawns need a good once over. Our workout
routine needs a new move, or heck, even our pets need some
extra special attention.
With that, we present you The Art of Grooming Issue of
InFluential. We don’t want to send you out there looking like
a hayseed or feeling like one. We have tips and tricks on
grooming your home, pet, job, and accessories. But finally, let's
not forget the icing on the cake: yourself. It’s always good to
start fresh and keep things in order. And, we here at InFluential
are determined to make it easier for you to do.
In this issue we are going to take the guesswork out of
grooming. We want to help you stay healthy, safe, clean, and
orderly. If all else, we hope you come away as a better or more
informed person than you were when you started reading. Or if
anything, we hope you come away with a flea-free dog and the
spiffiest pair of shoes you’ve ever owned. Enjoy!

e all know grooming is important. Tending
to our physical appearance is a sign of a
positive self-image and a healthy self-
esteem. By making healthy eating choices,
exercising regularly, practicing good
hygiene and wearing attire that accentuates our natural
attributes, we communicate that we are invested in
ourselves. But this self-investment should not be confused
with being consumed about our appearance; there is a
difference between investing and obsessing. The former
connotes self-confidence and assurance; the latter
emphasizes narcissism and insecurity.
Self-grooming is more extensive than just our
looks. How we present ourselves emotionally and
psychologically is just as important as how we present
ourselves physically. To be a well-rounded person,
grooming should move beyond the mirror and include
other non-physical aspects of our lives. It is easy to place
a lot of emphasis on physical grooming, since our physical
self is what everyone can actually see and know about us.
Our physical self is also the easiest to manipulate into a
mask to hide what may feel like are our inner blemishes.
As a marriage and family therapist, I spend plenty of
my professional time helping others groom themselves
for what they are hoping will bring them a happy and
more satisfying life. Often times it is a relationship they
are vying for. Maybe they want to find that special
someone. Or, maybe they want a better relationship with
their partner, parents, peers or progeny. Maybe they
need a more balanced and realistic relationship with their
career. Or, what they really need is a better relationship
with oneself.
How do you go about grooming yourself for all
the different types of relationships you have? Like
physical grooming, it starts by looking at oneself in the
metaphorical mirror — hopefully it is a full length one,
too. This is a rough task because we may not like what
we see. Are we more selfish than we would like to be?
Are our boundaries drawn to accommodate someone
else’s needs at the expense of our own? Have we
overcommitted ourselves? It's healthy to spend some
time rummaging through our inner closets and take an
honest relationship inventory as well. Which ones have
you outgrown? Which relationships simply don’t fit
your style anymore? Which ones should be given up to
Goodwill?
Grooming for relationships is an ongoing process. It
takes time and attention and starts with connecting with
yourself. If you do not know who you are in relation to
others—be them your partner, your kids or your boss—
then you have given up a part of your self-defining
authority to others and your environment.

One of the most important grooming devices I have
learned to use is the word “no.” It is absolutely necessary
in defining who we are and separating us from the rest of
the pack. “No” is needed to draw a personal boundary,
that ambiguous but crucial space where you end and I
begin. “No” helps us remain faithful to our own values
and is crucial in establishing self-respect. “No” can be the
moment something ends, which then allows something
else to begin.
Unfortunately, "no" is also one of the more difficult
words to utter out of fear of hurting others. Maybe you
grew up in a family where “no” was not allowed or if
used, it only led to conflict—something that you wanted
to avoid at all costs. If so, then start practicing.
I have a red “No” button on my desk at my office that
when pressed a voice utters the word in various forms.
It reminds me that sometimes the most appropriate
response to a given situation is simply “no.” I recently
watched an interview with a presidential historian who
stated that the most effective presidents, regardless of
political persuasion, were those who said “no” more than
they said “yes.” Just imagine where our nation would be
if some of our recent presidents had the courage to say
“no.”
Just imagine where you would be if you had only said “no.”

or many, a necktie is so much more than
a simple piece of cloth. A good necktie
exudes class and has the ability to take the
shirt-trouser combination to another level.
Still, there aren't many people who know
the basic rules of wearing a tie. A few common mistakes:
THE POORLY T IED NECKTIE
I would consider a poorly tied necktie the worst offender
on this list, because this is entirely avoidable. Mistakes
include: a necktie tied too short or too long, a flimsy
looking knot that does not fill the gap between the collar,
or a knot that shows any part of the narrow end of the
necktie.
TOO SHORTLY T IED NECKTIE
A necktie should be tied so that it ends near the middle
of your belt buckle. One that has been tied too short will
take away from the entire look and there is no excuse for
it! Even for tall men, most designers offer longer lengths.
KITSCHY NOVELTY NECKTIES
I am referring to any “big picture” necktie. The only
exception I make for wearing novelty neckties (although
I still wouldn’t) are certain holidays such as the 4th of
July, St. Patrick’s Day, Christmas, and National Bow Tie
Day (yes, it does exist!).
CLASHING COLORS & PATTERNS
So many men choose the wrong necktie/pattern for
their outfits. In terms of color, choose a shade that
complements your shirt and suit. When in doubt, wear a
dark navy or charcoal suit, and a white dress shirt as any
color tie will complement.
WRINKLED AND / OR STAINED NECKTIES
The necktie is usually the focal point of your ensemble. So,
a wrinkled or stained necktie is immediately noticeable.
While the accessory cannot be washed or ironed, without
damaging the tie, you should always untie your necktie
after each wearing. Hang your neckties on a tie rack or
over a hanger to allow the fabric to straighten itself out.
WRONG NECKTIE WIDTH
The width you choose must be proportionate to your
body type, dress shirt, suit, and tie knot. Yes, skinny
neckties are trendy, but they will look out of place if worn
with a boxy cut, wide-lapelled suit.
WRONG NECKTIE FOR THE OCCASION
Yes, there are indeed some dress codes and occasions
that will require you to wear a particular style of necktie.
A perfect example is the formal black tie dress code
(requiring you to wear a self-tied black bow tie), as well
as the even more formal white tie occasion (white self-
tied pique bow tie).
ACCESSORY OVERLOAD
Common necktie accessories are tie clips, bars, pins and
chains. While a tie bar can be the perfect addition to your
look (especially when paired with solid skinny ties), you
want to keep these types of necktie jewelry sleek and
elegant. Tie pins, chains, and collar bars are no longer in
fashion and should be avoided.

any organizations lack a formal succession
plan, career development or career path
processes and react only when turnover
occurs. In our work with companies,
we’ve realized something worth noting:
designing an effective succession plan is more critical
than ever before. That is, companies should create a plan
that is able to identify employees with the appropriate
skillsets to fill key roles before those roles need to be
filled. The most effective succession plans involve three
key areas:
• Identify and refine problem areas, gaps and strengths
before they become an issue.
• Build talent pools of potential successors and career
paths, based on an employee’s performance appraisal
and potential, and the needs of the organization.
• Find creative ways to retain high potential employees
and involve them in crafting and executing their
career development plans.
STRATEGIC PROCESS
A company should work on being able to identify any
holes or gaps in employment before they negatively affect
the company. By identifying skills and abilities needed
for critical positions, companies have the opportunity to
proactively source and develop internal talent.
IDENTIF ICATION OF SUCCESSORS
A common challenge a company faces is being able to
quickly and accurately identify internal candidates with
the right skillsets, experiences and qualifications to fill
key roles. Organizations should emphasize their plan on
roles critical to the company’s success or jobs that are
hard to fill. In many organizations, critical roles revolve
around revenue generation. However, other companies
find the most critical role may be a research scientist.
Assessment, performance management and wholly
encompassing feedback are some of the most commonly
used methods for identifying competencies for these
roles and those employees with the highest potential to
be succession candidates. Succession candidates get
added or removed from the talent bench regularly, so
make sure succession planning is an on-going process
with regular meetings scheduled throughout the year.
GROOMING FUTURE LEADERS
As a rule of thumb,
companies should
consider identifying
two to three
h i g h - p o t e n t i a l
employees per
role. By grooming
h i g h - p o t e n t i a l
employees earlier
in their career,
management is in
a better position
to make informed
decisions about
which employees
are ready to
transition from
manager to leader,

which employees require further development and
which ones may not be ready to progress further. Once
high potential talent pools are identified, companies
must find creative ways to make use of career
development plans to develop, engage and retain these
employees. These plans should outline skill gaps and
provide them with the necessary coaching, training
and managerial experiences to fully groom them into
effective executives. Additionally, hiring internally
fosters emotional commitment to the company, unlikely
to be found externally; people are more committed to a
company they’ve spent a lot of time with.
Creating grooming opportunities make the difference
between organizations that thrive and ones that fail. It is
important to inspire employees to apply their new skills
and knowledge as they gain them. Some organizations
put these employees on special projects or task forces,
while others have formal job rotation programs. One of
the most important development options is giving these
employees exposure to the senior executive team. This
teaches them how to communicate and interact at a
higher level in the organization.
The most important reason for this process is it gives
employees a feel of how they are viewed. By focusing on
the identification and development of key employees, it
sends the message that they are valued and that they
are important to the growth of the company. When
employees know that the company is preparing them for
greater responsibility, they are more engaged and often
stay with the company for longer periods of time.
Effective talent management might be good for the
bottom line, but there are likely to be budgetary
restrictions in place for most organizations given our
economic climate. Talent management does not need
to be a costly program, and with the right tools and
approach, there may be an opportunity to find more
effective ways of developing leaders, refreshing your
efforts and integrating it to ensure it is strategically
aligned with the business.

he main reason for having a skincare
routine is because we want to look our
best. Products like face washes and
moisturizers play a vital part in promoting
healthy looking skin. But there’s an unsung
hero that’s often neglected from skincare routines that
could really help.
A face scrub or an exfoliator - as it’s sometimes called-
is an easy to use product that brings with it a host of
benefits that will help keep your skin in tip-top condition.
By removing dead skin cells that form on the surface of
your skin these products are worth their weight in gold.
THEY REMOVE DIRT AND GRIME
Whether it’s grime from a hard day’s work or sweat from
a long gym session, there are going to be occasions when
your skin needs a deeper clean.
Using small exfoliating particles to clean your skin, a
scrub will leave your skin super-clean and prepped for
your moisturizer.
SPOT PREVENTION & CLEARER COMPLEXION
One of the biggest contributors to spot-prone skin is a
buildup of sebum, a naturally occurring oil on the skin,
which causes clogged pores.
Using a face scrub twice a week will help control the
build up of sebum, dirt and grime controlling spots and
blemishes that appear.
EXFOLIATING WILL IMPROVE YOUR SHAVE
The list of shaving benefits from using a face scrub is
impressive. An exfoliator will remove the dead skin cells
that clog up your razor (improving razor glide), lift tough
beard hairs, and prevent nasty ingrown hairs."
FLAKE-FREE SKIN
A common complaint of dry-skin sufferers is flakey skin
which not only looks unsightly but can also be difficult to
control. The instant reaction is to reach for the moisturizer
(which will undoubtedly help) but the real answer could
lie with exfoliation.
By gently buffing away the top layer of flaky skin, a
face scrub reveals a fresh complexion.
BOOST AGING COMPLEXIONS
Our skin is naturally repairs itself, regenerating new skin
cells approximately every thirty days. But when we hit
our 30’s, this regeneration process slows down. Your skin

needs a little help.
A face scrub will effectively mimic skin rejuvenation to
boost aging complexions and give your skin a new lease
on life.
WHEN AND HOW TO USE AN EXFOLIATOR
With something to offer all skin types, it’s easy to get
carried away and want to use a face scrub every day to
try and make the most of all the benefits. But I would
urge all guys to err on the side of caution; overuse can
result in your skin being stripped of the natural oils it
needs to retain elasticity, as well as over-drying your skin.
Some can use an exfoliator more often than others (if
you have particularly oily skin or regularly have a buildup
of dirt and grime from labor-intensive activities), but I
would suggest using a face scrub no more than two or
three times a week.
Apply a face scrub the same way you would a face
wash. Wet your skin with warm water before applying
a small amount of scrub on your fingertips. In small,
circular motions, apply the product to your whole face,
paying particular attention to areas of concern. Finally,
rinse off the product.
FashionBeans Grooming Tip: I find sometimes that the
consistency of a face scrub means that it doesn’t foam as
much as I’d like to cover my whole face. In this instance I
mix a small amount of scrub with a small amount of face
wash to create my own version of a 2-in-1 exfoliator.

SHOES SHINE
There's nothing like stepping out in a squeaky clean pair
of shoes and making a great first impression, at the office
or after hours. Shoes are one of the first things people
notice, so take the extra time to make sure your shoes
look clean and properly shined at all times.
Shining your shoes is a task that will take less than 30
minutes and it's completely worth it.
THE SHOESHINE KIT
A complete shoeshine kit can costs in upwards of $60
depending on the brand and quality of the shoe polish
and brushes.
A typical shoeshine kit includes:
• A shoeshine and polish brush
• Shine or buffing cloths
• Standard brown and black polish
• An all-purpose leather cleaner and conditioner

SHOESHINE KIT REPLACEMENT
If you're on a tight budget, you can save some money
by purchasing each component separately and making
your own shoeshine kit. All you need are two brushes
and some polish; you can even replace the chamois with
a cotton cloth, old t-shirt, or socks.
For best results, use cotton swabs or a toothbrush to
shine those hard-to-reach spots on your shoes.
Your shoes will be as good as new in now time after
these five easy steps:
STEP 1 : PREVENTION
Take the time to protect your work area in order to
prevent polish stains on your floor.
STEP 2 : START CLEAN
Before smoothing polish all over, make sure your shoes
are free of dust and debris. Use a shoeshine brush or a
wet cloth to carefully wipe off unwanted dirt. Be careful
not to scratch the leather.
STEP 3 : POLISH
Once your shoes are clean and dry, apply a sufficient
amount of polish with your brush. Spread it evenly over
the shoe. For hard-to-reach areas, use a cotton swab
or toothbrush. Wait 15-20 minutes for the polish to dry.
STEP 4 : BACK TO WORK
Once your shoe is completely dry, use the shoeshine
brush to wipe off the polish. Again, use a clean cotton
swab or toothbrush for those hard-to-reach spots.
STEP 5 : THE F INISHING TOUCH
Keep in mind that each and every step of the shoeshine
process is important. However, they are all rendered useless
if your buff job is subpar. Use a clean, lint-free shine cloth or
chamois to give your shoes the shine they deserve.
So remember to keep your shoes shining if you want to
be influential.

ats can literally be the biggest accessory
for the spring and summer seasons,
they’re reserved for the brave. When it
comes to styles, it’s about getting ahead
with a statement headpiece. Many trends
primarily cater to fashionable women; however, trends
have been increasingly including selections for the stylish
man.
A unique and fashionable headdress is a focal point
this time of the year in preparation for the Kentucky

mandatory. Whether or not you’re traveling to Kentucky
to actually be part of the action or you’re attending or
perhaps hosting a Derby Day soiree in your home town,

Now that you’ve tried on a variety of hats and found

DON’T:
• Pick the hat up by the crown - You've seen it in old
Hollywood movies, but handling your hat by pinching
the crown is a sure way to ruin its shape and the
integrity of the material.
• Leave your hat in a hot car - heat and humidity can
warp a hat.
• Set your hat down on its brim - the brim is not a flat
surface; leaving your hat this way will flatten it out
over time.
• Roll it up – hats will lose their form.
• Wear it in a rainstorm - hats offer some protection from
inclement weather, but few are made to survive it.
• Loan it to a friend - the number one cause of
irreparable hat damage.
DO:
• Handle your hat by the brim - The brim is a single
plane of material, so you can't crush it between your
fingers or crease it.
• Set the hat down on its crown - Most hat crowns
provide a better surface for the hat to sit on than
the brim, and it lets the hat air out when you take
it off. Plus, it'll encourage you to pick it back up by
the brim!
• Treat your hat like a fine pair of shoes - Don't wear
the same one every day and take care of it when
it's not on your head. A hat stand or hook will let it
get air circulation and maintains the hat shape while
preventing mustiness and mold.
• Turn the sweatband inside when damp. Reversing a
damp sweatband inside out will allow it to dry more
evenly and using a hat retainer will help keep it from
shrinking.
• Brush or wipe off dust and lint regularly - it's much
easier keep a hat clean if you prevent buildup. Brush
the dust off a felt hat in a counter-clockwise motion
or gently wipe the dust off of straw with a slightly
damp cloth.
Prevention is the best medicine for hats, and a well-kept
hat will age, not deteriorate.

ormally, people avoid chaos in their lives.
But, this is what makes Lesley Sarkesian’s
story amazing. Not only does she invite
chaos into her life, she turned it into a
lifestyle brand. The goal of Sarkesian’s
brand is to provide consumers with contemporary and
convenient solutions designed to “control chaos.” From
that, CHAOS COCKTAILS was born.
“Chaos is a good word to me. Life is nothing without
a little chaos to make it interesting,” Sarkesian said. The
inspiration for this grand vision began right in her kitchen.
While juggling a chaotic life in the corporate world,
Sarkesian experimented with creating her own “adult
Kool-aid”, consisting of vodka and natural fruit juices
with low-calorie sweeteners. Watching Bethenny Frankel,
owner of Skinny Girl drinks, and with much encouragement
from her family and friends, pushed Sarkesian to share
her signature CHAOS ON THE ROCKS™ with others.
With a little research, she noticed the spirits industry
ignored women. Knowing that women have tremendous
buying power drove the Sarkesian to bring us CHAOS
COCKTAILS.
As a woman breaking into the spirits industry,
Sarkesian was not afraid to ask for help. She visited with
other distillers in Texas to figure out how to kickstart her
vision into reality. Armed with this information, Sarkesian
put her plan into action. “Once I (have my mind made
up), I am like a light switch. I am ON,” Sarkesian said.
She left her corporate life behind and created CHAOS
COCKTAILS. “Typically, women have been under-served
because we were over-served with calorie and carb-filled
cocktails. I wanted to change this.

f you’re thinking about selling your house
or if you just want to give it a little pick-me-
up, there are several things you can do to
make it feel just as well-groomed and well-
kept as you are. Here are a few highlights:"
DE-CLUTTER AND ORGANIZE
It’s tough to see a home’s beauty and potential through
chaos. Clear kitchen counters by putting away all but the
most essential items. Clean out the closets and make a
trip to your favorite donation drop-off location. If you
haven’t used something in a year or longer, you can
probably do without it!
CLEAN AND FRESHEN UP
Once you’ve got a fresh canvas, give your house a
thorough cleaning. Get in all the nooks and crannies, dust
the baseboards and above the cabinets, clean the air
vents and deodorize the curtains, rugs and upholstered
furniture. Don’t forget the windows — clean windows are
one of the most important things to ensure your home is
as bright and cheery as possible.
TAKE CARE OF MAINTENANCE ITEMS
Keeping your home well-groomed means keeping air
filters current, replacing any spent light bulbs, checking
for any leaks under sinks and repairing any cracks or
damage to sheetrock, tiles, plaster or wallpaper. A fresh
coat of paint may be in order as well.
STAGE YOUR HOME
This one can be tricky because your personal preferences
on how you arrange your furniture may not be the way
it shows most ideally to prospective buyers. Sure, we
all love our favorite pair of old jeans, but that probably
isn’t the way we’d head out for an important business

meeting. Selling your home may likely be one of the
largest business transactions you will be involved in, so
why wouldn’t you dress it for success? Staging can be
as simple as re-arranging the furniture in the room or
into different rooms of the house; the goal is to highlight
the home’s features while minimizing any possible
shortcomings. This can usually be accomplished pretty
easily but may take an outside viewpoint to discern, since
we all get accustomed to our daily surroundings.
PERK UP THE EXTERIOR.
We mustn’t forget curb appeal. New mulch, a touch of
color in the flowerbeds, fresh exterior paint and a neatly
trimmed lawn go a long way to getting your home in
truly show-ready condition. Healthily potted plants by
the front door or on the back patio add an inviting quality
that’s hard to resist.

ow more than ever in the world of home
entertainment and technology, new
gadgets and gizmos seem to come out on
a daily basis. While many new products
may address a very specific niche and
are adopted by the minority of consumers, a few things
are consistent and stable technologies that are in high
demand.
SMART TELEVIS IONS
A few years ago, a television was nothing more than a
device used to connect to your cable box, game systems,
VCR and DVD players. Today, it has the capability to
stream dozens of both free and paid content directly
over an internet connection. Much like a smart phone,
these displays have applications that allow you to access
music, videos and movies using an internet connection.
Some can even connect to your network wirelessly. So
with little more than a power outlet, you can access a
nearly unlimited amount of ever-changing content
without a bunch of additional boxes laying around.
SOUND-BARS
Unfortunately, the speakers and amplifiers in modern
televisions are severely lacking. If you want better
sound without remodeling the whole room, a sound-
bar is an attractive option. A sound-bar is essentially a
compact, self-contained, self-powered speaker system
that houses multiple speakers and mounts near the
television. While it won’t replicate the experience that a
true surround system is capable of, it is a considerable
and non-permanent improvement to what the TV alone
can provide.

WHOLE HOME AUDIO
One of the most in-demand setups is whole
house audio, which is becoming more affordable
with the widespread adoption of airplay and
other wireless technologies. Some wireless
systems utilize their own wireless network to
communicate with your smart phone or tablet
and stream just about any song on the planet
around your home with crystal clear quality.
DEDICATED HOME THEATER
With the rising costs of going to the movies,
many homeowners are opting to convert
an existing room into a dedicated movie or
game room for their family. Whether they opt
for a large-screen television or a projector/
screen setup, the sound and picture can rival a
commercial-grade movie theater. No more noisy
patrons, cheaper popcorn and 24/7 access
make this a worthwhile investment to increase
your quality family time.
COMMERCIAL-GRADE NETWORKS
With an average family of four, there can be
anywhere from up to 20 or more devices
in your home connected to your computer
network. The more connections, the better your
equipment must be to sufficiently handle the
traffic. Investing in a slightly more expensive
router will ensure a more stable network and
you will also be able to have better control over
who is using it.

SHEAR ENVYW R I T T E N BY Marcia Nelson
e all have neighbors who
regularly don a sun hat and
gloves, wield some type of
lawn tool and meticulously
tend to their lawn. It may
initially seem obsessive, but when you see
the results, you may suddenly develop
lawn envy. To keep envy to a minimum,
practice these basic grooming tips to
ensure your lawn is healthy and vibrant.
Shear brilliance!
W
IN FLUENCE: THE ART OF LIVING WELL
IN FLUENTIAL 35
influential-magazine.com
STEP 1 : Choose the Right Grass
Start by having the soil tested. Amend the
soil if necessary. Choose proper grass for
soil, sun/shade combination and climate zone.
Tip: Grass seed mixtures give better
odds than one type of grass. If one dies,
the others will still be healthy.
STEP 2 : Water When Necessary
Water only when necessary to encourage
strong deep roots and resistance to
drought; water only when ground is dry.
When watering, kept it close to a depth
of 6-8 inches rather than several short
watering cycles. To discourage disease
and fungus while maximizing moisture
in lawn, water early in the day. If you live
in an area where droughts are common,
follow your water conservations rules.
STEP 3 : Mow the Lawn
Level the lawn for even mowing; highs and
lows can scalp grass. To prevent shredding
the grass, keep the mower blade sharp. For
stronger grass, alternate the direction and
angle of the mower each time you mow.
Never cut off more than 1/3 of grass length.
Mowing in the evening puts less stress on
the grass as well.
STEP 4 : Discourage Pests and Diseases
Discourage pests and diseases from
lingering; discard lawn clippings. To keep
from spreading diseased grass, avoid
walking on the grass when it is wet. Two
grubs per square foot is normal; ten or
more grubs per sq. ft. require treatment
with grub killer. Some products also control
chinch bugs, billbugs and other insects.
To prevent fungal growth, keep the lawn
aerated. Treat outbreaks with fungicide.
STEP 5 : Apply Weed Killer
Apply weed killer at the proper time
in the lifecycle of weed. Spread pre-
emergent crabgrass killer in the early
spring season before crabgrass comes
up. Repeated application can be used for
extended weed prevention through the
fall. To control existing weeds, use post-
emergent, broadleaf weed killer. Apply a
post-emergent broadleaf killer 2-3 days
after mowing. Lawns should be wet when
applying granular herbicides. Don’t mow
the lawn for 2-3 days after application.
Don’t water for 24 hours after application.
STEP 6 : Add Fertilizer
Fertilize 3-4 times a year for even feeding
and use slow release fertilizer with a
high nitrogen content (some locations
restrict use of phosphate fertilizers).
Limit fertilizer application during hot
weather on cool season turf. Fall fertilizer
applications improve turf quality in the
spring.
Be sure not to neglect shrubbery and
trees that, when well-manicured, increase
the value and curb appeal of your home.
Of course, if you’re just not into lawncare,
you can always seek the services of
qualified and knowledgeable lawn care
professionals.

consider my dogs family and I am
constantly concerned about their welfare.
So here are some scoop on how to keep
our beloved animals healthy and stylish.
CARING FOR OUR CANINE FAMILY MEMBERS
Shampooing Your Pet
Shampoo should be specific for the animal you’re
washing and low-foaming, so it rinses away easily and
does not strip nutrients from their coat.
• Use washcloth to wet pet’s face.
• Use hose or pitcher to wet rest of pet with warm
water.
• Start shampooing at face and work your way to tail.
• Let shampoo set for several minutes.
• Use washcloth to rinse shampoo from face.
• Use hose or pitcher to thoroughly rinse rest of pet.
Fight Fleas Naturally
For a nontoxic approach, wash your pet and his bedding
weekly and use the flea comb daily. Kill the fleas that
come off your animal’s coat by dipping them into soapy
water. Vacuuming daily can be a large deterrent, but you
must discard the vacuum bag to keep the fleas from
escaping. As an added precaution, seal it with tape and
wrap it in a plastic bag or burn it.
Brushing Teeth
Teaching a pet to let you brush their teeth requires patience.
Start by using your finger without any toothpaste and get
your dog used to the idea of someone lifting their lips,
rubbing their teeth and general mouth handling. Pretend
your finger is the toothbrush and go through the motions
of brushing the teeth paying particular attention to the
gum line where tartar builds up. Start slowly for just a few
seconds gradually increasing the time you spend in the
dog’s mouth.

CARING FOR YOUR FELINE FAMILY MEMBERS
Grooming Your Cat
To have your pet enjoy being brushed, make sure you
use a comb or brush with rotating, wide Teflon-coated
teeth. To groom sensitive areas, such as the face, ears,
and throat, use a fine-tooth comb. These tools will allow
you to glide through the cat’s hair without any painful
tugging.
Feline Dental Health
Look for warning signs that something might be wrong
with your cat's teeth: If your cat’s teeth look discolored,
there is tartar buildup or bad breath, drools, fails to
groom itself, changes its eating or chewing habits, paws
at its face or mouth, or exhibits signs of depression, it
may be experiencing tooth trouble.
Clipping Your Cat’s Nails
To clip a cat's nails, use a stainless steel scissor-like nail
cutter; try to trim the nails before you give the cat a bath.
If your kitten gets used to nail trimming at an early age,
you won't have problems trimming its nails as an adult.
To trim an adult cat's nails, start with two or three to see
how your cat fares. If your cat decides it's had enough,
stop there and resume nail trimming at a later time.
Contact your veterinarian or pet grooming expert to
ensure the health regime and grooming practices you
implement are appropriate for your loved one.

racticing good gym hygiene can limit your
exposure to germs that cause colds, flu,
athlete’s foot and staph infection. A few
things to consider:
MIND YOUR WATER BOTTLE
Plastic water bottles tend to hold bacteria. Using a bottle
made of metal will reduce the exposure to bacteria; besides,
they are much easier to clean. Just a little soap and hot
water does the trick.
WIPE, WASH, REPEAT
Whether you decide to constantly wipe down the
equipment, sanitize your own hands, or a combination of
the two, keeping your hands clean can help make sure gym
germs don’t do any damage. After using each machine or
set of weights, use the hand sanitizer and wipes that should
be provided by your gym to keep germs at bay.
CLEAN YOUR GEAR
Dirty, moist gym bags are great for fungi. There are several
ways to avoid contaminating your gym bag:

• Put your soiled clothes in a plastic bag and empty the
plastic bag right into the washer.
• Don’t forget about your sneakers! Like your soiled
clothes, slip them into a plastic bag before throwing
them into your gym bag. Wipe them with a disinfecting
wipe and let them air dry.
SHOWER SMARTER
Flip flops provide a barrier between you and the floors;
minimize the risk of being exposed to fungal
spores by soaking your sandals in a 10% bleach
solution once in a while.
TAKE A REST DAY
If you have an open wound, skin, or other infection, do not
jump in a jacuzzi or public pools. If you do, you’ll not only
transmit bacteria, but you’ll be more susceptible to bacteria
already lurking in the water.
HOLD OFF ON THE HOT TUBS
If you have an open wound, skin, or other infection do
not use Jacuzzis or common pools. If you do, you’ll not
only transmit bacteria, but you’ll be more susceptible to
bacteria already lurking in the water.

ith food culture expanding at a rapid pace, the
Austin cuisine scene is starting to resemble
some of the more lauded culinary hubs on
the planet. Our best restaurants now rival
those in San Francisco, New York, Sydney,
Paris and Rome-all without the benefits of the mountain
climates or coastal proximity. Coastlines and mountains are
important for wine, and Austin, while near a flourishing wine
culture in Fredricksburg, has yet to produce the vineyard
mentality that leads one to culinary adventures in groves,
pairing fruit, spreads and cheese with refined varietals.
Instead, Austin produces its own varietal. Tucked away
near Dripping Springs, is Wes Mickel and Jules Peterson’s
pride and joy: Argus Cidery. Cider production is a rarity in
any locale and with Argus, Austin has yet another unique
export. Not only are they producing a refined and refreshing
spectrum of libations, they have now paired their cider
production with a tasting room that feels imported from
Napa. Argus now offers the most impressive, incredible and
shockingly affordable Saturday afternoon experience.
With wood tables nestled under a brilliant lighting
installation, the space itself is a feast full of warm tones and
a flood of natural light that is the envy of many a gathering
space. However, the display is but an amuse bouche.
The real feature of this cidery is the food they present
to complement their sparkling or still cider. Dominated
by various spreads for crusty bread from Easy Tiger, the
menu offers both sweet and light to savory options. Their
marmalade, accented by the heat of Guajillo chili, is the
Southwest’s answer to a too-typical jelly or jam; their
homemade Boursin cheese will make a diner wonder why
they ever purchased cheese from a supermarket.
But the pinnacle of your visit will be if you can talk Wes
into parting with a sample of his chili jam. Equal parts spicy,
crunchy, zesty, and savory, Mickel’s incredible concoction
is instantly addictive and should be a staple on tables
throughout Austin.
The complete mélange of food, drink, and warmth make
for the perfect Saturday afternoon vintage.
Visit Argus Cidery online at arguscidery.com.

THERE ARE GREAT LUMINARIES AMONG US
he American Red Cross is hailed as one
of America’s greatest treasures for its
philanthropic work. Their Luminaria event
at The W on April 5th exhibited only a
fraction of how this organization supports
countries on both local and global scales. Their initial
goal of raising $140,000 was exceeded as they raised a
total of $146,675. We think that’s InFuential.
More than 250 distinguished guests experienced
The Luminaria, an event recognizing local heroes who
contribute to the community on a greater scale than just
Samaritan work; these Austinites have shown they truly
care about the community. These individuals have given
light to others in time of great need.
We especially noticed a select few individuals who
have displayed such generosity at the ceremony. Kendra
Scott of Kendra Scott Designs received the Lady
Bird Johnson Humanitarian of the Year Award for her
philanthropic work. Dell was given the Public Partner of
the Year Award for the company’s extensive charitable
contributions to the American Red Cross and other
nonprofit organizations. Bill Dorman received the Greg
Coleman Tribute Award for his work with disaster relief
efforts as he was a part of 17 deployments around the
United States during national disaster relief operations.
DJ Johnny Bravvo kicked evening into high gear
entertaining guests with high energy music on the
balcony. Piano Maestro Reuel Meditz mesmerized guests
with his performance of an original piece during the
program. Dave Madden and his band kept the frenzy
going well into the evening with their musical style and
stage presence.
This event demonstrates that even in times of darkness,
there are people who walk among us with a torch to lead
the way. – Kristie Quach
