Personalized Medicine - A Major Innovation in Quality Patient Care

Tuesday, June 16, 1:00 PM We read news articles or sometimes see brief TV segments regarding personalized medicine. What is this major innovation in health care?

At this month’s Forum, Megan Wick, from the College of American Pathologists, will describe some exciting advances in personalized health care and answer questions such as - What is personalized medicine? How have discoveries and new technologies in health care made it possible? How can genetic information play a major role in diagnosis or treatment decisions? What is the pathologist’s role in personalized medicine? What is helpful for me to know about personalized medicine when I discuss my own care with my doctor?

Megan is a director for the College of American Pathologists, the leading organization of board-certified pathologists, serving patients, pathologists, and the public by fostering and advocating excellence in the practice of pathology and laboratory medicine worldwide. Megan is a board-certified medical technologist through the American Society for Clinical Pathology and graduated from Michigan State University’s clinical laboratory science program. Join us. ETS/NW Provides its 20,000th Ride!

When ETS/NW was founded just 8-1/2 years ago (2006), the hope was that the organization would be able to provide 20 - 30 rides to seniors a month. That dream has certainly come to fruition, given that at the end of April, ETS/NW officially provided its 20,000th round-trip ride. That’s 20,000 rides all provided by volunteer drivers.

ETS/NW, the “little organization that could,” is a thriving 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization based right here in the Arlington Heights Senior Center. “We are so excited about this significant milestone for ETS/NW,” said Karen Hansen, Arlington Heights Senior Center Manager, “It gives us a wonderful opportunity to celebrate ETS/NW’s accomplishments, and I’m delighted to have them based here at the Senior Center. The ETS/NW organization greatly enhances the wide variety of services we provide to our community’s seniors.”

The organization currently enjoys having 85 volunteer drivers, including Prospect Heights resident and 2014 ETS/NW “Volunteer of the Year” Jim Walkowiak. “I love being an ETS/NW volunteer – it feels like I’m not doing anything special, but I know it makes a huge difference to the people I’m able to help out,” says Jim. “ETS/NW’s passengers are so friendly and they appreciate our help so much – it makes me feel good to know that my efforts are recognized and truly needed.”

Another ETS/NW driver is Arlington Heights resident, Joe Ruane, who also serves on the ETS/NW Board of Directors. “For me, volunteering for ETS/NW is a form of ministry in that not only do we provide transportation, but as volunteers we’re also offering our care and concern.” And boy, does Joe do just that! Having provided over 300 round-trip rides in his many years of driving for ETS/NW, Joe has seen, first-hand, how much our program is needed: “My wife and I believe we are all called to serve and that if able, we all need to serve others. I’m honored to be able to serve my peers in this way.”

Arlington Heights resident, Pat Barrett, one of ETS/NW’s two new elite “500+ Club” members (AH resident Ron Hanschman is the other one) agrees: “I love meeting and speaking with all the different people over the years and can tell when a passenger is really down – that’s when I try to cheer them up with a joke and a smile.” (Pat and Ron have each provided nearly 700 rides in their years as volunteers with us!)

Volunteer Marilynn Tonn (Palatine), considers driving for ETS/NW as one of her favorite things. “It would absolutely be the last thing I’d ever give up doing – I’ve met the most incredible people who’ve had such interesting lives. (ETS/NW ARTICLE CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE)

They love to talk and I love engaging with them.” She echoes what all our drivers say: “Spending time with the passengers makes me feel special; I always feel like I get so much more from the experience than I give.”

Every month, on average, ETS/NW provides 220 - 275 rides for anyone over 60 requiring assistance to their crucial medical appointments. We are the ideal program for the senior who may be a bit more frail, or who has visual or auditory challenges. An ETS/NW volunteer picks the senior up at their home, drives them to their appointment, waits with them, and then returns them home again, stopping at a nearby pharmacy if a prescription needs to be collected. A $12 donation per ride is requested.

UNBROKEN Friday, May 8, 1:00 PM

Angelina Jolie directs this true-life tale of Louis Zamperini, the Olympic track star who survived a plane crash in World War II, only to fight for his life against nature and eventually as a prisoner of war. Joel and Ethan Coen provide the script. Louis (Jack O’Connell) grows up a rough-hewn kid on the verge of becoming a full-on delinquent, until his brother starts training him to be a track star. Louis excels at the sport, and eventually represents America at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. During his training, he learns to become resili-ent and disciplined; his brother’s words of advice, “If you can take it, you can make it,” push him to overcome any adversity. He must live up to that adage under the most extreme circumstances after his plane is shot down during another bombing raid. He is stranded at sea for more than a month, only to be found by the Japanese and forced to endure constant physical abuse at the hands of sadistic prison-camp guard Mutsuhiro Watanabe, who wants to break Louis’ indomitable spirit.

Country Western Lunch and Laughter

Tuesday, June 9, 11:00 AM-2:30 PM Fee: $29 This luncheon is the perfect combination of great food and fun! The chefs at the Cotillion have prepared a delicious luncheon with a house salad, barbeque chicken, green beans and chuck wagon potatoes (potatoes with cheese, bacon and onions) and apple pie for dessert. Voice Your Choice - Advance Directives Counseling

When you talk with your loved ones about your healthcare preferences, you reduce stress and uncertainty should they ever need to make these decisions on your behalf. Advance directives are documents that describe the kind of care you want if you lose the ability to make healthcare decisions for yourself. A candid conversation is a great way to get started on advance directives.

Midwest Palliative & Hospice CareCenter will have a Social Worker/Chaplain available on Mondays, May 11 and June 8 from 10:00-11:00 AM to help you complete advance directives forms and ensure your wishes will be honored.

Appointments are required. Call Midwest CareCenter at 847.467.7423 for a confidential, one-on-one appointment. Family member or friend can be present.

Suggestion Box

26

Suggestion box comments are read and responded to by the Senior Center Manager and Advisory Council President.

Q) Get a really large globe or at least a large poster of the entire world and make it a centerpiece for seniors to discuss the geography. A) Thank you for this suggestion. We do have a small decorative globe in the lobby, which, if replaced, might lend itself to actually

being used. We’ll keep an eye out for one. Q) Now that the Academy Awards are over, let’s see: 1. Whiplash and 2. Birdman. A) Thank you for the suggestions. As you may well know, the movie selection is done by a committee and your suggestion is referred to them. Q) Love Your movies. Maybe we can have fruit juice instead of a soft drink or soda. Suggestions: grape, cranberry, orange. A) Thanks for your suggestions. We offer juice at times, along with soda, as we did at the April movie showing. Some folks have

said they prefer soda with their popcorn, so we’ll try to offer both options more frequently in an effort to please all attendees. Q) The Java brand coffee in the café is very bitter tasting. I would, and others, appreciate Folgers. A) Thanks for this suggestion. Your timing was perfect. We did make a switch to another brand. We’ll see what the future brings.

My turn: Parking, our “high class problem.” Please recognize that many of the people who come here have mobility challenges and would benefit by being able to park in close proximity to the door. We exceed the number of “handicapped spaces” that we are required to have. Since it takes two full-sized spaces to make up one handicapped space, putting more handicapped spaces in is not the solution here because it will ultimately reduce the overall number of spaces and most of our patrons simply need to park close by. There is one thing you can do: Please don’t try and “share” a handicapped space by parking in the striped section, even if you have a handicapped placard or plates. Your car can get ticketed. We actually had one patron calling the police about another patron’s parking habits.
