ADRIENNE WILEY ADRIENNE WILEY is currently Professor of Music at Central Michigan University where she teaches and administers the piano pedagogy program at the bachelor’s degree level, and teaches applied and class piano. Dr. Wiley received her bachelors and master’s degrees in piano performance from the University of Kansas, and her doctor of musical arts in piano performance and pedagogy from the University of Oklahoma. Dr. Wiley's dual focus on performance and pedagogy keeps her active in both areas: she maintains an active performance career as a soloist and collaborative pianist, and also has given workshops, presentations, and lectures throughout the state, mid-west, national, and international levels. Dr. Wiley is certified through the Music Teachers National Association at the state and national levels. She has served MTNA (national level) in many capacities: most notably the Local Associations Awards Chair, the MTNA Senior Performance Competitions Chair, and other select committees. She has also served on the Historical Research Committee for the World Piano Pedagogy Conference. She has been active in the Michigan Music Teachers Association as President, Past President, Vice President, Teacher Education Chair, Commissioned Composer Chair, the state MTNA Collegiate Brass/Woodwind/String/Chamber Competitions Chair, and now is serving as the Collegiate Chapters Chair and on the Certification Committee for the state of Michigan, and as the East Central Division Certification Commissioner at the national level. Dr. Wiley received the nomination for Teacher of the Year for the MTNA national level (2013); received the Teacher of the Year Award from the Michigan Music Teachers Association (2013); and received the Touchstone Award (2014) through the Michigan Music Teachers Association and the Michigan Youth Arts Council. In her spare time, Dr. Wiley has authored articles that have appeared in American Music Teacher Magazine, Keyboard Companion, Clavier magazines, and the Clavier-Companion. She has also reviewed the book, One-Handed: A Guide to Piano Music for One Hand for the Journal of the Music Library Association, and has been a frequently invited reviewer of piano music and books for the Music Teachers National Association’s American Music Teacher magazine. Dr. Wiley’s specialty is one-handed piano music: she has written articles on the topic, delivered workshops at the state, mid-west, national and international levels. She was invited to present at the International Society of Music Education in Brazil, 2014, and at the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers National Conference in Canada (2015). In addition, she has been invited to present again at the International Society of Music Education in Glasgow, Scotland (2016). Because of her interest in one-handed piano music, Wiley commissioned a left-handed piece by American composer Dianne Goolkasian Rahbee called “Adventurous Saga,” which was premiered in 2013. Summer finds Dr. Wiley as the coordinator of the junior piano camps at teaching at the Illinois Summer Youth Music Program’s piano camp. In her spare time, you will find her teaching her private students, practicing both the piano and the organ, researching and writing, and performing her specialty: single-handed piano music.

Susan Twitty is Looking for a Piano!🎶

Serenity Assisted Living and Memory Care in East Peoria is now open. My husband was the first to move into Royce Elliot Memory Care.I’ve made this my mission to see that they acquire an acoustic piano!

Everyone who is receiving this message is aware of the value of music for all and especially the elderly! For those with Alzheimer’s and other dementias, music is not only calming, but awakens memories of songs and pieces once familiar, but now gone. I’ve personally seen during these last two years, with my husband in Memory Care, residents who no longer speak, lift their head and begin singing along. Hymns from childhood, patriotic  songs everyone once knew, children’s songs, awaken parts of the brain in ways no medicine can. Persons who once played piano, but now don’t know the day of the week, the month, how many children they have and so on, will sit at the piano and begin playing Bach, Beethoven, Debussy or simply pieces from childhood. Those memories are still there. What peace and joy this brings to them and those around.

Yes, CD players and radios and tv can provide some entertainment. Songs can be sung acapella. A piano brings so much more!🎶

I’m preaching to the choir some would say, but when you, personally, are pulled into (dragged into) learning first hand how Alzheimer’s and other dementias not only effects and changes your loved one’s life, but the lives of spouses, children, immediate family, friends... you are changed.

God chooses to use us in ways we think impossible - but God doesn’t make mistakes.

I’m back to my original plea- Serenity has no piano. It’s my mission to see that they get one!

Please help!🎶

Susan Twitty

GENERAL MEETING MINUTES   4-23-2018

Rosa Chang, President opened our meeting at the Piano Network at 10:05 with 17 members present and 1 guest.

Secretary report was missing because we had no minutes taken from our April meeting.  Treasurer's report was read with a balance of $4503.61 and expenses were $733.39.

Monster Concert was discussed with plans for a walk-through at the FUMC downtown Peoria.  We feel the Monster Concert will go smoothly because Chris Vandre did a great job of conducting our past practices at ICC.  Our Monster Concert Dress Rehearsal was moved up to 11:00 and all teachers need to be there at 10:45.

New Slate of officers for 2018-2019 was read:   Rosa Chang, President;   Treasurer, Karen Thompson, Secretary Liz Reed, Hospitality will be taken over with 3 people: Mickey Chen,  Pam Dunlap, and Philippa Williams. These hospitality committee people will alternate at meetings. Our past president Philippa Williams will also remain on the board.

New Sonatina/Sonata committee is Becky Gebbink,  Pam Dunlap,  Pam Eyerly,  Alice Coon and Brenda Conroy.  We will meet for the 1st meeting on Tuesday May 8th at Becky's house at 9:30 to review and choose sonatas and sonatinas for the competition in the spring of 2019.

The venue has been secured with a deposit for the Masquerade Recital on October 20th at the Apollo Theatre.    October 27th and 28th will be the ISMTA State Conference at Northern Illinois University with Sylvia Wang as guest artist.

Our meeting was adjourned and Mickey Chien gave a wonderful presentation on Jazz Improvisation with many hand-outs.

Respectfully,

Brenda Conroy,  Secretary
