Occupational Exposure to Respirable Crystalline Silica March 25, 2016

Summary

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is amending its existing standards for occupa-tional exposure to respirable crystalline silica. OSHA has determined that employees exposed to respirable crystalline silica at the previous permissible exposure limits face a significant risk of material impairment to their health. The evidence in the record for this rulemaking indicates that workers exposed to respirable crys-talline silica are at increased risk of developing silicosis and other non-malignant respiratory diseases, lung cancer, and kidney disease. This final rule establishes a new permissible exposure limit of 50 micrograms of respirable crystalline silica per cubic meter of air (50 μg/m3) as an 8-hour time-weighted average in all indus-tries covered by the rule. It also includes other provisions to protect employees, such as requirements for ex-posure assessment, methods for controlling exposure, respiratory protection, medical surveillance, hazard communication, and recordkeeping.

OSHA is issuing two separate standards—one for general industry and maritime, and the other for construc-tion—in order to tailor requirements to the circumstances found in these sectors.

News to Share Sadly we share the passing of Pat Dun-ford, retired Chapter member, on March 26, 2016. Pat started working for J. G. Turner, Inc in 1990 as

clerk of their gravel pit, weighing all trucks as they came in to dump.

She joined the Greater Rochester NY NAWIC Chapter in 1991 and never served as an officer. Pat volunteered for many chapter committees and activities including Block Kids and the Beth-any House Christmas party. She left Turner's about 1998 and also left NAWIC about the same time.

Tricks of Her Trade by Jennifer Hungate

Express Your Passion

Anyone who knows me knows that besides being a mommy, wife and Project Manager I love decorating and upcycling furniture. What turned out as a hobby for myself and gradually a favor for friends has turned into something much more lucrative. Last year I recently started my side business "Fabulously Distressed", a unique upcycling furniture and repair shop. I mainly specialize in painting and upholstery of furniture. I have learned 100's of what not to do's but have never given up no matter how frustrated I became. My latest quest has been to try every line of chalk paint I could find. I have begun blogging my recent endeavor as I couldn’t find someone who had done the research and shared the information. I have purchased pints of paint ranging from $40/can to $6/can. What I have learned is that expensive doesn’t always mean better. Below are 2 pieces that I have in my personal home, the Blue dresser was painted in a higher end product (Annie Sloan, $40/can) and the yellow in a low end product (Waverly - purchased at Walmart for $5/bottle). Both pieces I love very much and am happy with the results. I am blessed to have been able to find something I love to do on my limited spare time outside of my normal work and mom/wife responsibilities and still be able to make it into a profitable business. It may not be consistent but it is something I am passionate about and something that allows me to channel my frustration.

Steps to painting furniture with chalk paint

1. Secure a location where your piece can allow time to dry in between each coat, and make sure to get your favorite coffee and iTunes play list ready

2. Make sure your piece is clean!!! I can't stress this enough. If there is grease or dirt on your piece the paint will not adhere properly and will eventually chip which will result in wasted time and material. I tend to use warm water and soap or mineral spirts with a soft rag.

3. Remove any hardware that will not be painted

4. Once the piece is dry begin painting your first coat, make sure to use a good brush as you don’t want bris-tles to stick to your piece (trust me this has happened and it's frustrating)

5. You may be asking yourself wait when do I sand or put on a primer??? Well ladies the answer is you can skip this step with chalk paint. The chalk paint adheres almost like a primer and leaves the piece in a nice matte finish.

6. Once you have applied your final coat (2-3 coats) you can let your piece fully dry.

7. If piece is dry you may begin putting on the clear coat to seal the paint. Or if you are looking for a more an-tique look you can use a dark wax with a round bristle brush in a circular motion and wipe off the excess wax.

8. Marvel in your new beautiful piece and enjoy : )

Community Design Center Rochester (CDCR)

Development/Design Fund Grants About the Program The CDCR advocates for the value of good design, plan-ning and public policy to support more livable and sustain-able communities in the Rochester region. Through the Development/Design Fund program we provide funding and technical assistance to help community-based organi-zations hire and work with architectural and planning con-sultants at the early stages of community revitalization pro-jects. The purpose of the Development/Design Fund is to improve the quality of revitalization efforts in challenged areas of our city.

The Development/Design Fund is generously funded by the Louis S. and Molly B. Wolk Foundation, the Max and Marion Farash Charitable Foundation, and the New York State Council on the Arts. The program aids 501c3 non-profit organizations by awarding grants and providing tech-nical assistance. Grant awards that range from $2,500 to $15,000. These grants support a wide range of projects, and maintain an emphasis on implementation of existing plans and projects that have already gained some commu-nity participation. However, it also supports new planning initiatives where needed.

The Development/Design Fund supports planning, design

and early-action funding for projects that need professional consultants (architects, landscape architects, planners, en-vironmental engineers), to perform pre-development work such as conceptual architectural drawings, community planning, urban design, and market analyses. Project types might include: buildings and sites, neighborhood planning, blight remediation, greening and sustainability initiatives, streetscapes, landscape design, development of design guidelines, and the like.

We encourage you to approach us with an idea for devel-opment and we will follow up with you to help guide the process; we are here to be of assistance. Grant applica-tions are reviewed twice yearly in both the spring and the fall through a competitive application process. CDCR staff assists with developing a scope of work and a Request for Proposals (RFP), interviewing and selecting a consultant, and working with that consultant throughout the life of your project. Once you receive a grant, the CDCR Development/Design Fund Committee is also available to provide design review and general insight into your project.

When a project involves specific real estate development, as opposed to community planning, assistance is typically provided as a “recoverable grant.” If your project moves ahead to construction, the Development/Design Fund grant is to be repaid (without interest) from construction financing sources. This enables the CDCR to re-use the funds to support other vital community projects. If the project proves to be unfeasible, the funding can be forgiven.
